Lovely unspoilt cottage on lovely unspoilt island.

5 of 5
The house is slightly old-fashioned and feels very "Greek", which we loved. The beds were comfortable, the hot water very reliable and the shower good. Kitchen facilities were fine and it was nice to arrive to a bowl of fruit and some tea and coffee. The terrace, surrounded by prickly pears and oleanders, with a view of the hills, was a perfect place to be, except in the middle of the day, when it was too hot for some, but there are other shady areas of the garden where you can sit. We did have to use anti-mosquito products when sitting out in the evenings, and found the plug-in ones useful for the night ( you can get packs of insecticide tablets from Kiki's amazing wonder-store in Frikes, as well as pretty well anything else you might need). The cottage is 5 minutes from Frikes and 10 from Stavros, so very well located, but you do need a hire car. As for the island, it is quite beautiful, partly because it is so mountainous, affording glorious views. For those like me, who find mountain roads challenging, be reassured: the roads are mostly excellent, with crash-barriers on the precipice side, so I coped well, only refusing to go up to the Monastery above Exogi. Beaches: Polis, below Stavros, is lovely and has facilities ( cafe, toilets, sun beds), but our favourite was "K2" ( second one along, between Frikes and Kioni), quiet, fascinating rock formations & a wall to sit on to get changed!), glorious mountain views. Restaurants : tried all 3 at Frikes, all good, all on the water's edge. Also, Donna Lefkas at Lefkas (posh food), and Ithiki Restaurant in Stavros: Prawns with saganaki and fennel- delicious. What to see: Kathara Monastery, Anogi (stuffed aubergines terrific, wall-paintings in church & wonderful walk up to Old Anogi), School of Homer ( Odysseus' Palace?) Esther does guided walks, very good, and she shortened ours as we are all knocking on a bit!. Vahi, very picturesque, busy, good for souvenirs. Excellent fish soup in the alley leading to the folk museum (shut that day, for technical reasons!). It's just a pity Ithaka is difficult to get to in September, but we did drink from the spring at Kalamos, so our return is assured! We loved it.

Very good week despite problems

4 of 5
We arrived only to find that the property we had booked had been let (by Demitri - the owner) directly to someone else bypassing HomeAway. Luckily the middle unit (No 2) was free so we had no option but to take it. Unit 2 is smaller and has no bath (shower only) something my wife really needs due to various replacement joints. Lena (the caretaker and owner's representative) was most helpful and considerate. Never the less we spent the week in less than ideal conditions. The actual location, pool and surroundings are fabulous and the friendliness of Lena and her husband Nicolas could not have been bettered. Demitri, came to see us and conceded that he had made a mistake and we amicably negotiated a refund. However the disappointing thing was HomeAway's refusal to help and their insistance of hiding behing the small print in their Terms and Conditions. It is not apparent from their booking website that, although you pay the money to them, they are only a marketing facility and absolve themselves of any further liabilities (contract = agreement + consideration?). There is no way that we will use HomeAway again - maybe to our loss but their attitude was not at all helpful to two over 75s. We think that if all had been as anticipated we would have scored this as 5*
