This is a wonderful house in a wonderful location !! If you are looking for a truly Greek experience we cannot recommend this place enough.
House Potami is just lovely! Very sizeable with everything you could need. They really have thought of everything. There is plenty of space to put your stuff, in the bedroom, lounge and kitchen. It is spotless. All you would need in the kitchen. Very comfortable bed, crisp sheets. Air con upstairs and downstairs, also a quiet fan above bed.
Outdoor areas also great, front garden under shade of a Mediterranean tree, very occasional passers by. Upstairs terrace of good proportions with sunbeds and dining table and chairs.
From the onset, the service from the owner was excellent. Quick responses to queries before we went and ongoing Mark was happy to help us with all we needed.
Vori, only an hour and a half drive south from Heraklion, is a quaint village with a small square. Best ice cream ever at the café/taverna, lovely café frappe. There is one tavern, Alekos, run by husband and wife, very nice indeed - gorgeous garden surroundings and delicious food. Three cafes on the square. Small supermarket open all day, possibly not Sundays. We loved that there were empty ruined buildings next to bright inhabited ones. Truly a Greek village experience.
Took day trips to Phaistos (ancient Minoan palace), Gortyn (ancient Roman capital), Minoan tomb, Matala where hippies inhabited caves (ancient Roman tombs) in 1960s. There is a beach at Matala and also a quieter beach nearby at Kalamaki with free sunbeds at the tavernas - all this within 5-30 minutes drive from House Potami.
We have stayed in many properties booked via websites such as Ownersdirect, this is one of the best!
We arrived late at night in the dark tired and weary and woke up the next day to a stunning panoramic view from the hilltop. To climb the final short steep drive to the villa, I would not recommend a very small overloaded car. Also website does not make it clear that the room with the extra bed is downstairs but was no serious problem.
The rooms were clean and tidy and the kitchen was well stocked with self catering facilities. The village of Pitsidia was a typical and most delightful Cretan village with its small winding roads and laid back tavernas of which Markos and Mikes were two where we enjoyed local delicacies of vine leaves, mousaka and lamb always finishing inevitably with the local raki.
The nearby Hippy resort of Matala was of course the main reason for staying nearby and was easily accessed via good open road.
Annette was very helpful and always available, not that we needed her, other than on advice on local places of interest....like eating places. She was always there in the morning cleaning the pool. And even when we had departed, contact continued, texting us in the UK to say we had left a key and jacket behind and very promptly after giving her our home address she immediately posted the items.
Should we go back to Crete we would definitely go back to Pitsidia, particularly as it is far from the busy touristy beaches of the north and northeast of Crete, it is truly a lovely place to visit in the springtime sunshine and just chill out.
