Daratsos Holiday Cottages (32)

Good, quiet location - the cottage was excellent, and the surrounding garden was beautiful.

The owners were welcoming; and the cottage is detached (but it needs an identification name plate on the gate as we were uncertain that we had found the right property), with only few other properties on the same road. The cottage is situated on a rise whereby the back veranda has a excellent view of the valley with the mountains in the distance acting as a spectacular back drop. The cottage is well appointed, has very good facilities, (a good cooker, large fridge freezer, a good washing machine, wireless connectivity, excellent air conditioning). It is completely private with no properties overlooking. It has two verandas, a small one at the back (to watch the sunrise) and the larger at the front (to watch the sunset). The cottage is well built - with stone floors and wooden beams. The main bedroom is a good size, although the second bedroom is on the mezzanine platform in the main lounge area. Because it is high up in the room space it isn't as cool, so our son preferred to sleep at floor level. There is a substantial BBQ area with oven and BBQ griddle. The owner tends the garden every morning but he isn't intrusive, and Maria (his wife) will cook you at least two delicious meals that are typical Cretan. There is abundant animal life - it has all sorts of exotic insect life, Cretan spiny mice, lizards (big and small), snakes (all types are harmless - Cretan legends will tell you why), beautiful birds (eagles, buzzards, swallows etc). If you don't like such animal life then Crete is not for you. There is a very small cove nearby that has a little beach of sand, and a fair amount of fish life and we saw two dice snakes that were hunting the fish. The cove is just over ten minutes walk from the cottage - you need to take the track that leads through the fields across from the cottage. The cove is deserted in the mornings but can get too crowded in the afternoons and weekends. To sum up - all members of our group really liked the place and we will probably return some time in the future.

Very peaceful and picturesque position and an ideal base for exploring north west Crete

We had a great week, the owners made us very welcome in this traditional property. The villa had everything we needed and lots of space. The village of polyrinia is pretty and overlooks a steep valley with mountains all around. It is built on the site of an ancient Hellenic city and there is a great walk through the village and up to the hilltop above with ruins from various centuries. The taverna on the way up to the hilltop is very nice with fantastic views especially at sunset. Kisamoss is 10-15 minutes drive with good amenities and a very nice beach with a good restaurant (Maria Beach) and free sun beds and shades at the eastern side beside the small river. We would certainly recommend it!
