We had a fantastic stay at Bluebay Cottage. The cottage is actually larger and prettier than it appears in the photos. It is extremely well equipped - as good as home away from home, and has been brilliantly renovated, retaining the building's character. The location is great - lovely views of the sea and surrounding hills from the terrace as it's high up at the top of the village, and walkable distance (20 minutes) to the bay and plenty of tavernas.
You can also walk to Sisi - the next village over with a picturesque harbour and even more bars and restaurants - by following a wide track along the coastline (go left at Milatos Beach, go past the harbour and then when you reach a large hotel, go past the bar area of the hotel and down to the small beach. Cross the beach and take the track up the hill the other side, over some boulders. The track then leads to Sisi, with some lovely views. The walk takes about an hour and a half).
There are also plenty of places to see a short drive away. We loved Elounda and Spinalonga Island a half hour boat trip away from Elounda (boats are easy to find, run every half hour and were 8 euros pp). The ancient ruins of Malia Palace were worth an amble round, and Agios Nikolaos was a pretty town on the coast with a lake surrounded by tavernas and cafes. All were within an hour's drive from Bluebay. We felt we needed longer than a week to properly explore.
Milatos itself was ideal - quiet as it's a good 15 minute drive away from the main highway, and small enough to retain the traditional Cretan village feel. We ate a great meal at both of the tavernas in the village, as well as equally good meals at tavernas on the sea front.
We were met by Edith who was very welcoming and friendly, despite it being the early hours of the morning after a late and delayed flight. Our deposit was returned swiftly, so the overall service was faultless.
I'd definitely recommend the cottage to anyone who enjoys peace and quiet and wants to properly see Crete. Those who want noisy nightlife, bars and clubs - go to Malia instead!
Thanks Paul and Edith for a fabulous stay!
