We’ve just returned from a week at La Conciergerie, the perfect French gite in an ideal location.
This impressive property is set in the grounds of a private family owned hotel, the grounds themselves are huge and boast beautiful well cared for gardens with an expanse of lawns, flowering shrubs, trees, a pond and even dovecotes...it’s more like a very pretty private park than just a garden.
The gite is accessed by large ornamental wrought iron gates that lead up the gravel driveway to the hotel and there is ample car parking directly outside. At night these gates are closed electronically making your vehicle very secure indeed (you’re given a remote control electric fob to open and close the gates should you need to come or go after dark).
The owners of the hotel, Caroline and Luc, were very welcoming on our arrival. They showed us around the gite explaining where everything was and how everything worked and told us to call across to the hotel should we need anything. We didn’t need to trouble them and from this point on we felt it was like our own gite, (we wish it was), and we were given total privacy.
The gite itself is fantastic, being tastefully decorated in a very chic rustic fashion and has everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay, it is very much a case of just add food!
An unexpected bonus was that the beautiful gardens also came with a dog, a most lovely gentle springer spaniel who greeted us every morning with a happy wagging tail. We would have liked to bring him home with us but thought that Caroline and Luc may have noticed that he was missing when we left.
The location of this gite is also excellent, we travelled from the ferry port in Dunkirk and it only took us an hour to get there on very straight forward roads. Sainghin-en-Mélantois is a lovely village with a Carrefour Express mini supermarket only a few minutes’ walk away and two boulangeries around the corner. Our favourite was La Boulangerie Dhaussy, which is the older and more traditional French bakery, where we purchased all of our breakfast pastries and bread each morning.
So in summary we had a brilliant stay and were extremely impressed with all aspects of the accommodation and the very pleasant manner of the hosts, so much so we are hoping to return next year. We would highly recommend this gite to anyone who appreciates traditional homely French charm.
Merci beaucoup à Caroline et Luc pour notre super séjour!
La famille Morgan.
