Landhouse Manuela itself is an oasis of peace and quiet. Loads of outside space to suit both sun and shade lovers, surrounded by a lovely garden that resonated with birdsong all day long. Perfect for our lazy morning breakfasts and relaxing evening glass(es!)of wine.
And it’s location! We couldn’t believe our luck. Pitsidia is the epitome of the traditional Greek village. White houses arranged higgledy-piggidily along narrow streets and laneways. A central square - lazy during the day and alive with activity in the evening. A selection of restaurants (our favourite was Livas), breakfast eateries and coffee bars to suit all tastes (and pockets). Several well-stocked “mini-markets” for fruit, veg and staples, a butcher that sold melt-in-the mouth ribeye steak, a bakery-cum-patisserie (desserts to die for!) - all within 5-min walk from our doorstep. And - NO souvenir stalls, tourist-trinket kiosks or hassling hustlers. A real, working day-to-day Cretan village that we felt at home in within 48hrs.
Add to that a lovely quiet beach at Kommos (5-min drive or 20min stroll through lazy country lanes dotted with pink and white oleander bushes with wonderful sea and mountain views) AND several archeological and historical sites to visit within a stone’s throw - Minoan Phastios and Agia Triada (10 min drive), Greek & Roman Gortyn (30 min), Knossos, Malia and the Heraklion Archeological museum (60-75 min drive). As I said, EVERYTHING Crete has to offer. We were in 7th heaven.
Thank you Franziska - not only for the opportunity to stay in such a wonderful place but also for all your hospitality and friendly welcome.
