This is a very nice, modernised property very close to the heart of the Commune of St Denis d'Oleron. The house is within walking distance of good local shops, restaurants, a daily market and a small supermarket as well as beach bars and cafes.
The house itself is set back from the main road and is bright and airy, with a walled garden to the front and an enclosed suntrap area to the rear, big enough for four people to relax. A spacious, tastefully decorated lounge/kitchen dining area downstairs.
As for the island, there's plenty of variety for daily outings and the food is uniformly very good - the lighthouse at the north end (close to St Denis, probably just about walking distance) is worth a visit, both for the views from the top and the local scenery and restaurants. St Pierre, the central town, has some decent clothes shops and a good market. Our favourite place was Le Chateau at the south end. Very picturesque, lots of local artists, Vauban fortifications, good restaurants and cafes and of course the ubiquitous market.
Beaches - yes, beaches everywhere - the island is practically one long beach, though as one side faces out into the Atlantic, there's quite a difference from the sheltered side.
Can't speak for the nightlife of the island as we're almost as old as our dog, so weren't out beyond eight p.m.
In conclusion, great house, great location, relaxing holiday. Recommended.
