  • Great villa, with lots of character, in a friendly village

We had a very relaxing time at the villa, and even felt a bit like locals (apart from not speaking Greek!)! The owner is an art/antiques dealer, and the villa itself is full of interesting things to see (he renovated it himself). To help us settle in, the owner gave us some of his home-made Raki (and good stuff it was too!) and organised a local taverna to drop off a traditional meal for us. The next day, we spent chilling out by the pool, and ambling round the village to pick up groceries (and being offered more Raki by the shop owners). As well as the regular shops, there's also a very nice patisserie which does mini (and full size) ice-creams - great for a little treat! We had a car, so on different days visited Knossos, the Archaeological museum (in Heraklion), and some local vineyards (most require you to book ahead, but we got lucky at Boutari and were able to join a tour - and their wine was great!). They were all quite easy trips - a few hours rather than all day. Oh - and you save lots of money by getting a combined ticket for Knossos and the museum - would probably also recommend that order as it helps with context - and our guide at Knossos was definitely worth the money. The description says that restaurants and shops are local, and in this place, it was definitely true - the bakery and butchers were about 50 yards, and the village square (with 2 "cafe bars") was about 100 yards. There were probably 6 or 7 places to eat within 5 minutes walk (some posher than others, but all quite tasty). We normally cook a few nights on holiday, but with food so convenient, we didn't really bother. We also drove round the coast (after visiting the museum in Heraklion) to have a paddle at Pantanassa beach, then ate a nice meal in Taverna Delphini. Other than that, we just enjoyed being in the villa - in the courtyard, by the pool, or just pottering... The pool itself is pretty big - although not particularly shallow, so perhaps not suitable for young kids (and you'd be constantly nervous with all the ornaments and trinkets, so in general, young kids not recommended!). The main house has a large master bedroom and beds on the mezzanine, then there is a separate bedroom (& another bathroom) in the courtyard, so it's actually nice for couples (or a couple & a family) sharing as gives some privacy. We spent our last night drinking Raki and watching Greek football with the locals - a great way to top off a lovely break. Thanks Dimitris!
