The Haut-Rhin in the Lorraine, is an incredible historic province in eastern France your home away from home. Haut-Rhin means that it is in the upper Rhine area, whereas the nearby Bas-Rhin is the lower Rhine region. The population in the area is ranked 28th in all of France, thus you can see that it’s not very heavily populated. The countryside is marked by hilly land throughout. The economy is steered by the fact that it is the locale of the Peugeot factory, thus it has the lowest unemployment rate, and its people are wealthy.

Places to visit on holiday to Haut-Rhin

Mulhouse is one of the cities in the Haut-Rhin, and it is heavily industrialized as well as commercialized due to the automobile production. However it is also the location of the Université de Haute-Alsace, which has a truly beautiful campus.

However nearby Colmar has magnificent historical architecture because it is a very ancient frontier town. There you will be treated to cobble streets and of course the plentiful half-timbered buildings that not only date back to the Middle Ages but also to the Renaissance period. Green, blue, orange and red are extremely prominent on the outside of its buildings, which gives the street a distinct appearance as well as creating a festive feeling. You will delight walking from one market stand to another of course, and because you are in a self-catering accommodation, you can bring in the local produce to make yourself a sumptuous meal! Also remember that Colmar is situated directly within the Alsace premier wine-producing region called the Route des Vins, which translates to Road of Wines!

The Haut-Rhin's dialects, architecture as well as its cuisine all exemplify the manner in which the area has take on board both German as well as French characteristics. In a lovely village known as Turckheim, you can witness a time-honoured practice of seeing their night watchman, who is of course dressed the required traditional clothing, walking its streets at 10 PM and halting at each corner he arrives at in order to sing.

Perfect romantic hideaway

5 of 5
Lovely gîte in a picturesque, peaceful wooded setting. You could spend a week just doing the well-marked walks in the local valley with splendid views (the route past the lake up to the reservoir was a favourite) and the cycle path on the disused railway line is safe and easy. There's plenty of interest locally and the main tourist attractions of Alsace are within easy reach. The gîte is comfortable, has everything you need and the owners are friendly and helpful.

Pleasant gite, lovely owners and neighbours, superb location

5 of 5
We loved our stay at the gite, especially as our dog was also welcome. The owners provided us with delicious little cakes on our arrival and fresh tomatoes from their garden - so kind. We had the use of their tennis court, which we loved, and the large garden with gorgeous views was a delight. The garden is not enclosed, so those with pets or young children need to be vigilant! The gite is only a two minute walk from a beautiful forest with numerous walking and cycling trails which we thoroughly enjoyed. Masevaux and it’s area has so many delightful places to visit - we swam in the local lake, cycled up the Ballon d’Alsace, visited some beautiful villages, the impressive Haut Konigsbourg Chateau, the very moving Le Struthof concentration camp, and hopped across the border to visit beautiful Basel in Switzerland, Altogether a wonderful holiday, thank-you!
