The airport pick-up along with the friendly welcome and orientation went like clockwork. The apartment is spacious for two people and everything in the bathroom worked perfectly well. The kitchen was also well equipped though we couldn't get the microwave to function; not a problem. We loved the location, a 20 minute, €1.90 single bus journey into the centre of Funchal. The ground floor nature of the apartment makes access quick and easy. São Martinho is a quiet district and we very much appreciated the more relaxed 'vibe' after a day (or half-day) in tourist-heavy Funchal. We were very impressed with the quality of restaurants in walking distance from the apartment - absolutely no need to journey into Funchal. We took breakfast each morning at Doce Mãe, a wonderful patisserie and coffee shop across the street, next to The Forum. Fresh coffee, bread, cakes and savouries baked on the premises, and the best custard tarts in Madeirã!
The bedroom had plenty of wardrobe space and we managed ok with two single beds pushed together - at least they were of a decent size. As others have said, the pillows are an absolute disgrace and the owner really needs to listen to reviewers and make the small improvements suggested - replace them! The only mirror in the apartment is in the bathroom, which makes it rather awkward for ladies' hair drying. There is a socket in the bathroom, however.
There is only one reason why we choose not to return - the noise from the tennis court. It's in use every day but between the hours of 3pm and 7pm weekdays - just the time we like to use our balcony for a drink before dinner - there is a coach yelling and shouting constantly at the kids he is teaching. On one occasion, he was teaching a kid how to hold a racquet, and still yelling at him. He just never shuts up. I'm aware that other reviewers found this noise 'quaint' but for us, we just wanted some peace and quiet. The court is in use all day on both weekend days and for us it was too much.
The pool was a real treat. I know we were a little out of season but we had it to ourselves almost every day. It's on the opposite side of the building to the tennis court, so no noise! Sunbeds, parasols, tables are all available from the communal room near the pool; people in the apartment block generally, are quiet and respectful of others. We loved that.
In summary, it's a lovely apartment in a super location and excellent value-for-money.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this lovely apartment and will certainly be back.
The only disappointment was the pool was out of use however this wasn’t a big problem as the lido outdoor public pool was open and this was very close to the apartment.
Our plane was delayed and we arrived 3 hours later than expected however this was no problem. Ana kindly met us later than expected and showed us the apartment. It was a surprise for us to have juices, fresh fruit and Maderia wine and the toiletries in the bathroom were all appreciated.
Thank you for our 10/10 stay in Maderia!
