Dordogne holiday rentals

The Dordogne’s ravishing countryside, gastronomic excellence and charming historic villages and towns make for the perfect French escape

Few regions capture our romantic ideal of the French good life more attractively than the Dordogne. Beautiful rolling countryside, atmospheric medieval castles and picturesque villages set the scene and an abundance of gastronomic pleasures complete the Francophile fantasy perfectly.

Perhaps the only thing about the Dordogne that doesn’t entirely match British perceptions is the name itself. The French understanding of the Dordogne is slightly different – it’s a name more readily associated with the great river that sweeps across the southwest of the country. What Brit’s tend to regard as the Dordogne roughly approximates the Périgord, a region that occupies the northern part of the Aquitaine.

Dordogne holiday rentals

The freedom afforded by a Dordogne holiday rental property makes a lot sense if you really want to discover this beautiful but geographically expansive corner of France. So much of the Dordogne’s bucolic charm reveals itself via exploration, so a car and a well-placed Dordogne country cottage may well trump a hotel that keeps you moored in one town.

Holiday rentals in Dordogne run the gamut, from prime camping ground in the heart of the region’s most picturesque countryside to vast chateau with enough rooms to host you and 50 friends.

The Dordogne’s colour-coded regions

The Périgord is divided into four colour-coded areas: Périgord Blanc, Périgord Noir, Périgord Vert and Périgord Pourpre.

  • Périgord Vert So named because of its green rural valleys, meadows and forests, Perigord Vert is situated in the north of the Dordogne, arguably the region’s most overlooked area. If the northern part of the Dordogne is indeed less popular with visitors it’s hard to see why – its lush, verdant countryside abounds lovely pastoral scenery with and there’s no shortage of picturesque towns and villages to wander. Brantome – known as the Venice of the Dordogne – enjoys a splendid riverside location and boasts plenty of splendid medieval and renaissance architecture including a noteworthy Benedictine abbey.
  • Périgord Noir The Dordogne’s most popular area, Perigord Noir’s name is inspired by the dark forests around Vézère Valley and Sarlat-la-Canéda. You’ll find everything the Dordogne’s best known for in Perigord Noir – spectacular medieval castles, world famous prehistoric sites and an abundance of picture perfect towns and villages.
  • Arguably the area’s biggest attraction is its remarkable concentration of important prehistoric sites. The Lascauxcaves, near Montignac – itself a historically significant medieval fortress – are the home of the world’s most renowned prehistoric cave paintings. Somehow the fact that the original caves have been closed to the public since 1963 and visitors are only granted access to a perfect replica of the 17,0000-year-old drawings doesn’t detract too much from the uncanny spectacle.
  • The area’s prehistoric marvels don’t end there -Grotte du Grand-Roc,Grotte de Font-de-Gaume, and the Grotte des Combarelles, to name just three, are among the Perigord’s many prehistoric treasures.
  • Périgord Blanc The limestone hills of the region that surrounds Perigeux, the Dordogne’s biggest town, give Perigord Blanc its name and Perigeux itself may be the area’s foremost attraction. In a part of France that is most readily associated with rural splendor and sleepily picturesque small town life, Perigeaux is a buzzy blast of metropolitan hubbub, complete with a lively café and restaurant scene. Which isn’t to say that the city is without a deeply rooted historic magnificence of its own. The architectural legacy of the city’s long history reached right back to Roman times - see the Vesone Tower and the remains of the amphitheatre – and, most notably, encompasses the Chateau Barrière from the middle ages and the splendid Saint Etienne church, which dates back to the 16th Century.
  • Périgord Pourpre Situated in the south west of the Dordogne, Perigord Pourpre’s name is a tribute to the region’s grapes and the exceptional wine they’re transformed into. Much of the region’s renowned vine growing ‘terroir’ surrounds Bergerac, a fine, historic town in its own right, but also a hub for visitors drawn by the many revered vineyards that populate the region.

Needless to say, wine sampling is a splendid way to explore Perigord Pourpre but there’s plenty to see between vineyards. The town of Monpazier, founded in 1284 by Edward 1 of England, is undoubtedly one of the Dordogne’s best preserved bastide towns and well worth a visit for the remarkable historic breadth of its architectural treasures.

Dining in the Dordogne

Even in a country as captivated by gastronomy as France, the Dordogne stands out as a region that revels unashamedly in the sensuous delights of its local cuisine. Many of the treats one instinctively associates with France – wine, foie gras, duck, goose, ceps and truffles – are specialities of the region and it doesn’t take much research to discover a host of revered restaurants that put the local produce to excellent use.

  • Le Vieux Logis (Trémolat)

A Michelin-starred gastronomic mecca in the lower Dordogne, Le Vieux Logis is something of an institution and continues to do splendid things with the region’s finest ingredients. Expect beautifully executed classic French cuisine, bucolic luxury and a bill that’s almost as breathtaking as the elegant dining room.

  • Restaurant L’Essentiel

L’Essentiel is perhaps Périgueux’s premier restaurant. Showcasing fine Perigordian cuisine courtesy Eric Vidal, one of the region’s top chefs, this plush restaurant in Périgueux’s old town invariably lives up to its Michelin-starred billing.

  • Villa Laetitia (Bergerac)

A local favourite, Villa Laetitia is arguably the best place in Bergerac to enjoy expertly executed Perigordian cuisine. A homely ambience, reasonable prices and English-speaking staff make for a thoroughly accommodating evening.

An excellent property!

5 of 5
Our stay in Sarlat was spent in this perfect property which could not have been better. The property is well equipped, immaculately clean and comfortable and we feel blessed to have found it! The owner, Emanuelle, was extremely helpful, he left us to our holiday but we knew he was there on the end of the phone if we needed him. The property is conveniently located right in the Centre of the medieval town of Sarlat. The town is buzzing and steeped in history. There are lots of wonderful restaurants to choose from and lots to see in and around Sarlat. We would highly recommend the property and will definitely be returning some time in the future!
