Galatina, Città d'Arte; a mini Lecce, and home to some of Puglia's most famous churches

Galatina is a beautiful historical town in the heart of the Salentine Peninsular, within easy reach of the Adriatic and Ionian coast-lines, Puglia's "Lands End" (Sta Maria di Leuca), as well as the baroque provincial capital, Lecce. Galatina itself has some beautiful baroque architecture and some of Puglia's most famous churches, and as a result is often referred to as a "mini Lecce".

Of these churches, there is the Basilica di Santa Caterina, renowned for its beautiful fourteenth-century frescoes that cover its interior. The main square also features the incredibly impressive San Pietro. Perhaps the most famous of all the churches (and the most under-stated) however is the chapel of San Paolo. The chapel is located a small distance from the town square and is steeped in history. There is a legend which says that water from its well has the power to heal those who have been bitten by the tarantula. From this legend comes the annual Festival of the Tarantula, a tradition where would-be bite victims make their way to the well to be healed, whilst dancing to the pizzica (music that is typical of the area). I feel it's important to point out, there are no tarantulas in the area now so there's no need to be worried!

The festival is called "La Notte della Taranta" and traditionally takes place on San Paolo's feast days (28th and 29th June). Festivities usually start early and finish late in Galatina, where there is music and dancing, as well as a huge fair of rides and market stalls.

As well as the beautiful historical buildings within Galatina, many of which date back to the 16th century, you can also find a wealth of restaurants, bars and shops. During the day, your time can be spent drifting between cafe's, bakeries and gelato ice-cream shops, whilst in the evening the town centre comes alive with people eating at fantastic restaurants, admiring the flood-lit architecture and frequenting the many bars, listening to live concerts in the town square, or visiting some of the many shops

Due to its location just south of Lecce, Galatina offers an ideal base for sightseeing and exploring Southern Puglia. Not only this, but because the town is away from the tourist hotspots on the coast, the town is still lively and vibrant out of season, yet not overcrowded during the summer months.

Beautiful house in the heart of beautiful Galatina

5 of 5
We loved staying in this house. It's in a wonderful location in the heart of the old town. It's very spacious, light and airy. It's well-equipped and everyone was very comfortable. The main salon and staircase are gracious and impressive. The terraces are wonderful (and would be especially so in the summertime) with superb views across the roof-tops of Galatina. We recommend staying here!

Everything you need and all top quality!

5 of 5
I have just returned from staying at Jim and Paul's appartment in Galatina. First of all, the town. As soon as I arrived in the Piazza de San Pietro and got my first glimpse of Galatina, I knew it was going to be a great place to stay. Beautiful baroque churches, palazzos and all the shops you could need and more. A genuine, well conserved, deep South Italian experience. As for the appartment, it was everything you see in the pictures and more. Very well finished with great attention to detail. Comfortable bed, very effective air-con, central but quiet, two great terraces to choose from and everything else you want to take on holiday but don't have room for; beach umbrella, coolbag etc. What I really liked was that no expense or thought had been spared. You didn't need to go out and buy loads of loo roll, dishwasher tabs, olive oil etc, it was all there. If you go in summer, you will live in the kitchen and first roof terrace till late in the evening. A suberb place to stay which I will recommend and return too! Galatina is well placed for great excursions to either coast. All trips can be done in about an hour. Try Gallipoli, Sta Maria de Leuca, Porto Badisco, Porto Selvaggio and Torre Ulizzo. I am really fussy when choosing holidays off the internet, trust me this place and its surroundings are top-notch. I actually preferred this region, The Salento, to the area that we went on to next, around Ostuni and Martina Franca. I will be back soon. Thank you Paul and Jim for being so professional in every respect.
