The wonderful city of Nimes is best known for its fantastic Roman sites, combining history, culture and scenery into a fantastic tourist destination. Situated in Southern France, Nimes is just inland from the Mediterranean coast, north east of Montpellier, and north west of Marseille; this is France’s popular Languedoc-Roussillon region.

Things to do on holiday in Nimes, France

Although Nimes is near to the coast this attractive city is more popular as a city break destination rather than a beach holiday, but that being said the location means that holidaymakers can enjoy the best of both worlds here! The lovely beaches of the region are easily accessible when you want a day of relaxation. Your Nimes self catering accommodation is also a great base from which to enjoy the beautiful Provence region of France. The city is surrounded by attractive villages and hills to the north, so visitors can make the most of the countryside by enjoying walks or bicycle rides.

As a fairly sizeable city, Nimes has everything you’ll need while staying in self catering accommodation. There are plenty of shops and supermarkets here, plus some great restaurants when you want a break from the cooking, and bars if you want a lively night out.

Places to visit on holiday in Nimes, France

This part of France has a great deal of natural beauty to offer though the highlight of a self catering holiday in Nimes is the man-made attractions. Nimes dates back to the times of the Roman Empire and is full of Roman ruins. The Roman Amphitheatre is second only to Rome’s Coliseum and is the best preserved Roman arena in France. It is actually still used to this day for bull fighting and to host concerts and events. Maison Carre is another of the Roman sights. This is a very well preserved temple and features a short film inside. About 15 miles outside of Nimes is one more piece of Roman architecture. The Pont du Gard is an impressive aqueduct that used to carry water into the city. But these are just a few of the attractions you’ll be able to enjoy when staying in accommodation in Nimes! You should also take time to visit some of the surrounding towns and cities too, such as Avignon, Montpellier and Marseille.

The weather in Nimes, France

Being situated not far from the coast, self catering accommodation in Nimes benefits from a Mediterranean climate. During the summer temperatures are hot though not excessive, however, some visitors may prefer to visit during the cooler winter, spring and autumn months when you can enjoy sightseeing without the larger crowds and a little less heat.

Just like the photos

Loved the location and the sun terrace (a sun trap!). Located above a great market, round the corner from Carrefour City. About 15/20 mins walk to the Arena, 10/15 mins to Temple of Diana and park, 5/10 Masion Carree, 5 mins to shops. Quiet at night dispite being in the city centre. Fast WiFi. Well stocked with pots, pans, kitchen utensils. Apartment does look just like the photos. Perfect for a visit to Nimes.

Unique, stylish, comfortable apartment in a great location; great host. Would recommend.

Patrice's apartment is a great place to base yourself when visiting Nimes. It is centrally located with great rooftop views from both sides. It is more than spacious enough for two people, with facilities for self-catering, and with the amazing produce in Les Halles just nearby this is a good option. Patrice also provided recommendations for several local restaurants and we enjoyed all those we tried. The apartment is comfortable and stylish, and decorated with an amazing array of artworks....even by the end of our week there I was still spotting pictures I hadn't engaged fully with yet! It was a great place to just spend time in relaxing, in between visiting the local sights. Climbing the four flights of stairs each day will keep you fit, however there is a lift to the third floor available to use. Patrice is a friendly and welcoming host. He replied promptly to all messages and queries, and helpfully arranged for the apartment to be ready early so we could get settled in straight off our train. He had a wealth of information and suggestions about things to see, including bus and train timetables and how best to get to each place. Nimes easily had enough to keep you busy for a week, and more besides. Thoroughly recommended.
