Charming XVtIh century renovated three-storey stone town-house located on the old market square by its trickling fountain at the entrance of the what was once the Jewish quarter of Vaison-la-Romaine. Perched on the upper, medieval part of this Provençal town with a rich heritage and a prestigious past, it is just a walk away from the lower part and lively center of Vaison-la-Romaine.

The house, tastefully decorated in a style combining Provençal furniture with Mediterranean touches, is as welcoming in the summer as in the winter.

On the ground floor, a spacious living-room with a convertible sofa, a fire-place, Satellite TV, Hi-Fi CD player and radio, and Wifi connection, leads into a dining-room seating 6 to 8 people. Adjoining, are a half bathroom, and a separate, fully-equipped kitchen (including a dish-washer and a microwave oven) opening onto a quaint small balcony overlooking an enchanting courtyard awash with flowers and greenery.

On the second floor, two bedrooms: one with a queen size, 160cm, double bed and its bathroom en suite with a shower and toilet; the other room with two twin beds (joinable into a single king size wide bed) and a full bathroom en suite equipped with a washing machine.

On the top floor, an attic room with futon bed and bathroom, opens onto a terrace with a view on the upper part of the Medieval city and the Castle ruins.

I live in Paris where I am partially retired but still do free-lance work. I discovered the Vaucluse over 35 years ago and was dreaming of having a house in the south. I finally purchased this cottage 9 years ago and spend time there all year round. People are friendly and welcoming and the region has a wealth of interesting activities to offer both physical and cultural.

Vaison la Romaine is set in a beautiful countryside. Both the town and the surrounding area offer a rich variety of landscapes, colours and Mediterranean aromas and a typically provençal mellow lifestyle. It is close enough to Avignon to be accessible for extended weekends and far enough from the noisy crowds. The region is very sought out by cyclists for the beautiful rides it offers through the countryside. It is also a renowned "Côtes du Rhône" wine-producing land with many wine-tasting tours available in local producer properties.

What makes this townhome unique

The stone cottage is in the Medieval part of the city on the hilltop, by a trickling fountain on the old market square. The property dates back to the XVth century, and was renovated by an architect two decades ago. It is full of charm with its different levels where each room has an ambiance of its own, from the cellar to the attic and terrace overlooking the castle ruins and the old town rooftops. It is conveniently located, at walking distance from the center of the town, lively during the day and very quiet and peaceful at night.

Quite a few steps and stairs make for the charm of the house but not very comfortable for toddlers and their parents!

We spent a week in this lovely townhouse. Michelle, the owner's representative, came immediately when we couldn't find the house. She came with her car and we followed her to the house. She is a real gem!

The house was well equipped with lots of things you wouldn't think about ( jam, honey, vinegar, toilet paper, bottled water). We enjoyed doing some trips to nearby places (Orange, Mt. Ventoux, Lavender Route, Seguret). We enjoyed participating in the Tuesday market runs from the Roman bridge to downtown. We enjoyed walking to town and eating locally.

This property is well situated in Provence, to visit most of the attractions.

Thanks to Joan for our great vacation.

Our family had a wonderful stay at this lovely old townhouse. Michelle, the owner’s representative, was there to greet us when we arrived and was very welcoming and knowledgeable. We especially appreciated the nice touches—a cold bottle of local wine in the refrigerator and delicious brioche bread that she left for us.

The home was very tastefully decorated and well equipped, and we loved the comfortable beds and nice linens. There was plenty of room for our family of four (children ages 18 and 16) plus one additional 16-year old. We had no problem finding parking right outside the medieval wall.

The home is ideally situated in the beautiful old town and provides a good base for exploring the surrounding area. We enjoyed wine tasting in the magnificent Rhone valley, and took side trips to Avignon and Orange. We would highly recommend this charming home and hope to return some day!

Perfect vacation spot

Our family of four (two children 13 and 15) loved this exquisite large and comfortable home located in the medieval section of the city. The house is everything that the advertisement promises and more.

We arrived and were treated to a tour of the city and directed to the best shops by the owner's representative, Michelle, who lived in the town below and who was charming and cultured. Our kids were able to spread out in the house with the older sleeping in the upstairs sun room and the younger having his own room and bathroom. It was great having three bathrooms, although only two were full and only one had a shower stall. The laundry and free wi-fi and phone service were appreciated, as were the full kitchen (small but serviceable), dining room, and upstairs terrace.

The old fountain was right outside our house, as was an excellent restaurant in which we were able to have a fantastic French meal and then walk steps to our abode. The owner was responsive and kind: it felt like we were staying with family.

You cannot go wrong here. My wife and I enjoyed peaceful walks in the evening in a quiet and historic area, knowing that our kids were safe and happy holed up in the house (ah traveling with teenagers).

An enthusiastic two thumbs up. You will not be disappointed!

My only regret in writing such a glowing recommendation is that it will make it all the more difficult to reserve the next time we visit.

Vaison-la-Romaine, a town set in the heart of lush, fertile countryside famous for its wine-making. In addition to fine Roman ruins, cobble-stoned streets and medieval churches, art galleries, shady spots under plane trees, cool fountains, Vaison-la-Romaine offers all the charm of a genuine Provençal town with its busy streets, welcoming café and restaurant terraces and, of course, its superb Tuesday morning market (from 8 am to 2 pm), teeming with the fragrances and colours of the South of France. Vaison’s provençal market is the largest in the “Provence des Papes” and A MUST, not to be missed!. It extends from the Roman Bridge to the far end of the Avenue Charles de Gaulle covering as well the entire Parking lots on the left of the Avenue. Make sure to be on foot the whole part of the town is closed to traffic all morning until past 2 pm.

On the famous Côtes du Rhône wine route with many nearby villages famous for their wine, Vaceyras, Rasteau, Séguret and of course Gigondas and Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

At the foot of the Mont Ventoux and a drive away from the Vallée du Toulourenc. UNESCO has recognised the specificity and the natural diversity of the life forms here and have ranked Mont Ventoux as a Biosphere Reserve.

?Going for a bathe in the Vallée du Toulourenc will be a most welcome if you’re seeking some quiet and freshness on a hot summer day. You can walk several kilometres upstream and have a pick-nick on the shore while enjoying the coolness and the beauty of nature.

In addition to Vaison's own danse and song festivals, throughout July and August the region offers a treasure of worldwide celebrated festivals such as the long-established theatre Festival d'Avignon, the Chorégies d'Orange (opera) the Festival d'Aix (opera) and the Roque d'Antheron festival (piano), featuring top international performers and productions.
