Description

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday cottage in Prahova - The Grape

2 bedrooms and 1 loft, 1 full bathroom, sleeps 6

The Grape's charm comes from its relaxed surroundings and sense of freedom from the stress of a city and busy life. Set on and around working vineyards, The Grape is a renovated 1925 cottage with original doors and solid oak flooring but renovated with all modern amenities including a new cooper counter top kitchen and dish washer.

Stroll among The Grape's two vineyards next to the property, relax under one of the cherry, almond, apple, apricot, plum, walnut or mulberry trees or just kickback in the sunny sunken patio next to the fire pit.

Dont expect to be pampered with luxury at the Grape, otherwise you (and I) will be frustrated. This is the country side after all. But do expect quality.

I miss my vineyard and all of the parties and friends i hosted. Now, since i am no longer in Romania, I want The Grape to give to others the opportunity to relax and enjoying the outside (as it did for me).

Long lunches, walks, reading, sitting by the fire and drinking wine is what it is about.

Since you will be staying in the wine region, you will have to indulge, no?

The Grape is a working vineyard and makes about 1500 liters of wine a year, mainly white but also some merlot and depending on the harvest, rose as well.

You will be given 6 bottles of wine as a gift upon your arrival.

Additionally, you will be given a bottle of the local plum and grape brandy (which is locally distilled). You will probably be given samples from nearby neighbors since each thinks his/her plum brandy and wine is better than the next.

There are plenty of books in the cottage in case you finish all that you brought, in addition to board games to keep everyone occupied. Plus, any kids will love to visit the neighbors 'barn' with goats, chickens, geese and more.

Sit and relax or help in the vineyard with the vineyard master when he is there, or gather a few almonds from the tree above and put them in your cereal and cut a few flowers to put on the table for dinner.

The idea is to relax and enjoy.

About Barton Sidles

Entrepreneur who lived in Romania for 17 years and enjoyed every minute.

Barton Sidles purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Barton Sidles chose Romania

This property has been a labor of love from the time my ex-financee and bought it in 2005.

We wanted a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Bucharest plus we wanted a fun place for friends to be able to come and enjoy weekends (and clearly, the wine making/drinking aspect is a benefit :) ).

It is easily accessible from Bucharest and it such a beautiful place to get away and we loved the idea of growing and making our own wine (which you will taste and enjoy when you stay at the The Grape).

We looked at 3 properties in one weekend back in 2005 and The Grape was next to the last property we looked at. And we thought we liked that one, and then we walked around to the front of the cottage and even though one wall was nearly gone/collapsed and everything was totally over grown, we knew at that moment we had to get that one (but we did not even know if it was for sell).

Long story short, we ended up negotiating with four sisters and brothers in 4 different cities to buy it (i said it was a labor of love :)). The next door vineyard was ultimately bought by a friend (who you might meet since he is often there (a Brit named Jamie).

What makes this cottage unique

We renovated the original cottage built in 1925 with new walls, expanded kitchen, indoor plumbing and bathroom plus we replanted 85% of the grapes. The garden was revived and a fire pit/chill out area was added as well as the stone patio and a new storage shed built.

I then ended up buying the small vineyard across the road (right in front of the cottage) in 2008 to add additional grapes and protect my view of the cottage.

The vineyard produces approximately 1200 liters of white wine (mainly the Romanian grape Feteasca Regala), 400 liters of red (Merlot) and 200 liters of rose.

Get ready to taste your vacation away with mine an other local wines (but remember, this is not the Cote du Rhone, Napa Valley, etc. :) )

Rustic Charm

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is basic but lovely - typical of the area. Ioan looks after the property and guests but to be honest there was nothing we needed him to do.There were more grapes, plums almonds and figs than we could eat and the lovely neighbours: Vasile and Elena insisted on giving us sweet peppers, tomatoes, chard, eggs, watermelon and more. In exchange we took Vasile to the local market in Pietroasele - which reminded me of markets in rural Ireland and the Mud Volcanoes north of Breaza. We also visited the Ciolanu Monastery and went for a walk in the hills beyond the Vineyards with Vasile.

There is a Lidl in Mizil which is about 20 minutes from the cottage so you can get anything you need but don't buy veg or fruit - the home grown stuff is better. Its incredibly peaceful there and if the weather is good you can spend the day outside. If overcast there's a fab little porch at the side of the house with a lovely view which was pretty cool for reading and musing. Bart's directions work perfectly (despite the fact that the final stretch doesn't exist on Google maps) so trust them. Everyone is really friendly; if you don't speak Romanian - which I don't - take your iphone and use Google translate. Works a treat. No bars etc near the house - nearest is in Greacanca which you could walk to but its not a bar exactly more a cafe that has beer. I'd recommend this cottage to people who own well stocked Kindles and want to get away from the hustle and bustle.

Very quiet and charming place away from manything

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed nearly two weeks at this lovely place. We enjoyed the quiet and friendly atmosphere of the village, the garden and the house itself, did some walks and some tours to more distant places. We were the only tourists around, which gave the trip to this place a very special attitude. We can only recommend staying there. Even the dogs in the village were comparatively quiet.

Vineyard Holiday In Romania

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely stay at the vineyard. We both wished it could have been longer. You have two of the loveliest neighbours anyone could ask for. The lady who lives directly opposite invited me to sit and chat with her on the second day we were there. Whilst we had no common language we both managed to enjoy the interaction. Later on, the man from the very end of the lane came over to the vineyard with some delicious, prunes, apples, pears and almonds from his garden for us. We were also given fresh eggs from the lady across the lane and we had another lovely chat while we watched the chickens scratching around. They both made sure that we had a wonderful experience while in Romania. Next time you are at the vineyard could you please express our sincere thanks to them both. We were disappointed that we missed out on seeing grapes being harvested and wine being made. It was something we were looking forward to after your email about it. Again, our thanks for letting us share your lovely vineyard.

Perfect Romanian relax and chill-out destination

  • 5 of 5

My small family stayed for a week--we loved it. The property has really pretty grounds, including a great BBQ area and a big vineyard that our son liked to explore. The house is cozy and comfortable, our friends from Bucharest came up and it was easy to sleep another 3 people in the loft and the living room. The village has a small grocery store, so make sure you bring most of your provisions with you to minimize trips to the city. If you are into wine, it's a great location as there are wineries in the area that make for interesting 1/2 day trips. I'm happy to recommend this cottage to anyone looking for an off-the-beaten-track place to relax, and explore the wine region.

Classic country home

  • 5 of 5

If you want to experience real Romanian village life, complete with goats, chickens and horse drawn carts, this is the place. It's quiet and peaceful and full of fresh fruit you can pick and gorge yourself on. Love the copper countertops and garden window views. Haven't slept so well for years...charming, charming, charming...

Like an island

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in the cottage. Like Bart indicated we quickly decided to forget about any trips and just relax, read our books and do nothing more strenuous than barbecueing and jam making. Ion and his wife welcomed us when we arrived, we recieved some instructions we mostly didn't understand but it didn't seem to matter, and there were bowls of fruit and flowers from the garden on the table.

So we got a lot of reading done, the place is really like an island, when you close the gate the outside world doesn't exist. We did make some contact with the neighbours, who were very friendly and curious.

It was nice to taste a bit of that part of Romania as well, next to Bucharest and Transylvania, so all and all we had a great trip.

The Grape is located in the heart of the Romanian vineyard region. The cottage is surrounded by vineyards and views across acres of vines and rolling hills.

There is a weekly market where local farmers sell fresh produce and flowers as well as local craftsman with baskets, clothes and of course wine.

Near by Breaza, there are vineyards for wine tasting, the Berca Mud Volcanoes and plenty of scenic drives and country walks.

The Grape is a place for relaxing and forgetting about a city. 6 bottles of estate wine are provided for free and there is plenty more where that came from if you want. Plus, the region is known for its plum brandy. A bottle from The Grape's production will welcome you upon your arrival.

The neighbors might bring you fresh goat milk or that morning's harvest of very free ranch chickens.
