Our family of 11 couldn't have stayed at a better villa. our rooms were spacious. The best food, made fresh daily with local fruits and vegetables was 5 star. After our daily activities, the swimming pool was the perfect cool down. I have memories forever and would go back in a minute. My family was looking for a house rental to stay with all our party, and we always prefer Guanacaste no matter the long distance from San José (5 hours by car), but if you arrive by airplane to Liberia it would be a shorter drive by far. This is my review as a local to all you visitors to my beautiful country. PROS 1) Rural Costa Rica: you are in the middle of a small rural town with its soccer field, a few restaurants and unpaved streets (great condition 15 min to paved streets), you can walk to buy some basic groceries or to visit some restaurants, let me tell that I have some years of not enjoying my stay like this in a Guanacaste town. 2) Lot of Beaches: you are between 10 to 45 minutes by car from great beaches, some with a lot of tourists restaurants, shops and super markets. Some of the beaches are Avellanas, Junquillal, Playa Grande, Tamarindo (the most tourist and crowded), Flamingo (kind of white sand beach), Brasilito, Conchal (shell beach really different) Playa Grande, and as everything in CR all are unique 3) It's a gated community and 5 min walk (inside the property) to Playa Negra. 4) House: in great conditions, 5 rooms, 2 kitchens, high ceilings, lot of space. 5) Pool: The photos in their website don’t make it justice is more wide/big with some parts really depth. 6) Owner: what great person, we didn't meet him but he helped us with everything we need it. 7) Price: you can get more luxury house options but with really higher rates, in my opinion you have a great rate with a great house. CONS Didn't find. IMPORTANT If you are looking to be in the middle of the party this is not the best option because you may need a car and drinking and driving it’s a bad decision, but if looking for a big house with a pool, at the Rural Costa Rica but with lot of beaches and restaurants close (some walkable) this is your perfect place.

Spacious home in excellent location

This home is located in Rancho Playa Negra which is a small gated neighborhood with direct beach access. The house is well laid out and there was plenty of room for 9 adults. The pictures accurately depict the property, however, the layout of the house is much more spacious than we expected. We decided to rent our own car - we rented a Mitsubshi van and it was the hero of our vacation. She wasn't anything luxurious but she could make it up and down all the dirt roads and allowed us to explore the beaches north and south of Playa Negra. Pizza at KonTiki is a must and only a short 5-minute drive, Marabelle has a beautiful beach and a great restaurant called the TikiHut. Playa Negra is a sleepy beach town that offers a restful and friendly atmosphere. Recommended for: Families with Young Children, Girls Getaway, Adventure Seekers, Age 55+, Families with Teenagers.

Genuine Costa Rica - Best Surf Trip of my life.
Date of Stay
Aug 23, 2012
This was my 3rd trip to Costa Rica and by far the best one yet. I live in Venice, California, and a guy who surfs at my local spot told me about Playa Negra. I was apprehensive, as I have had mixed surf trips to Costa Rica on my own in the past. I did Bali about a year ago, and thought it couldn't get much better than that. I also have stayed in many subpar places in CR, and was worried this was going to be all fluff. I was wrong on both accounts. When I landed at Liberia it was a little bit more than an hour drive to The Wave House. I had an all-nighter packing and an early flight, so when I arrived at the Wave House that night, I was exhausted. I met Bob (the guy who runs the place) and was pleasantly surprised by him. He greeted me with a smile, gave a me a quick tour of the house, and showed me my room. It was night already, and I was so tired so I basically went straight to bed without exploring. The next morning, I woke to paradise. I walked out groggy-eyed and was greeted my the glint of the sun off the pool and blue jays flying through the yard. Bob was making breakfast for us, and handed me a fresh Costa-Rican coffee. The breeze was floating through the kitchen and living room, and everything smelled fresh and clean. I ate the best breakfast ever (Bob is an amazing cook...make sure you ask him for the Suave Special), and then grabbed my board and headed to the beach for an amazing surf session. I continued this pattern all week. I stayed a total of 9 days at the Wave House. It has everything I would ever want. Fast internet. Sat TV (although I never used it), clean pool, washer dryer, clean bathrooms and bedrooms, and an overall warm, safe vibe. The house is a 2 minute walk from the beach, and hosts everything from a rocky beautiful surf wave, to a chill, sandy family beach. There also are amazing little walks around the neighborhood, and everything felt very safe in the area. The town was about a 10 minute walk, and had some great restaurants and little stores. Biking and ziplines are a close drive away. The place is a chill vibe and feels like the right mix of creature comfort and still feeling "off the grid". Trust me and skip Tamarindo and head to The Wave House for genuine CR. Recommended for: Families with Young Children, Sightseeing, Adventure Seekers, Families with Teenagers.Response

Best Surf Trip Ever

Unreal surf trip. The house was amazing. The food was excellent. Even with Negra not breaking while we were there Bob was able to find us waves every day. He was up at the crack of dawn with us and charging anywhere we wanted to go. He showed us tons of great spots and we scored a great boat trip as well with Boos Adventures. Totally worth every cent! The house is so modern and fully loaded with everything we could ever want. TV’s everywhere and lots of room. The AC in the bedrooms is so nice and really helps when the humidity is up. Can’t recommend this place and Bob enough. Don’t think just go!Recommended for: Families with Young Children, Sightseeing, Girls Getaway, Tourists without a Car, Adventure Seekers, Romantic Getaway, Families with Teenagers.Response

We came here for a family reunion-large spacious rooms-10 of us and never seemed crowded! Great modern kitchen for having breakfast-each bedroom had tvs and its own a/c. A pool to relax by after a day of surfing and exploring Costa Rica. We even saw the howler monkeys right in the backyard! Great local restaurants and the beach was just a short walk. House had very quick wifi so everyone could use their laptops, ipads, ipods, etc It is a good location for exploring other surfing beaches as well-favorite lunch spot was Lola's. Definitely check out the full day adventure at Rincon de Vieja-whitewater tubing, ziplines, mudbaths...and Stand up paddleboarding with Pargos Adventures-Recommended for: Adventure Seekers, Families with Teenagers.
