I have just spent the last two years of my life fulfilling a long-time dream of building my own house near the sea. People always ask me why I picked Zihuatanejo, Mexico – a valid question. But I just tell them to look around. Casa Camila is built on a low hill on the central side of the Zihuatanejo bay facing west, out to the open Pacific sea. The view is so expansive that it takes your breath away every time you look at it. You walk up the entry stairs and turn around, and really, your breath stops, even if only for a micro-second. And that´s not just at sunrise or sunset…it´s every minute in between. The view is in every sense breathtakingly beautiful. A sense of calm and peacefulness immediately warms your senses. You may be woken by the chirping of the birds, or the squawking of the chachalakas (tree chickens), the braying of a donkey or the occasional barking of a dog, but otherwise it is usually very quiet and peaceful, with only the sounds of the sea and the immediate surroundings.
That´s why every room in the house was built to have that view every minute of the day. Situated in the lower hills overlooking the beautiful bay of Zihuatanejo, with a private infinity pool and open living/kitchen/patio area, it's the perfect place to slow down, reconnect with yourself and loved ones, get inspired, and get away from it all. It´s big enough to comfortably accommodate groups or individual and couples, but provides the privacy for everyone to relax on their own. It´s easy distances to the beaches, downtown and the crowds, but far away enough to not have to deal with the noises and chaos of the crowds.
If you are looking for a place where you can cook some of your own meals, either due to dietary restrictions or just simply not wanting to go out and eat restaurant food all the time, then you will be happy with the big open kitchen/living area in front of the pool. You can cook, drink wine, listen to music and lounge by the pool all at once. Assistance in food shopping will be provided on arrival if requested, and you can store and cook your food at leisure. Coffee and tea are on the house.
Two single rooms, and one suite with two bedrooms, (total of 4 bedrooms) make this house an exclusive and intimate, yet a comfortably spacious place to stay. Elegant simple furnishings and a king size bed make up every bedroom, (except the back room of the suite, which has a queen-size) and all guests have access to the open living, dining and kitchen space, beautiful pool area and a private office as needed. Sitting fairly high in the hills, each bedroom is surrounded by the deep greens of the tropics with an amazing view of the beautiful blues of the sea and the skies which can be enjoyed from your bed, sofa, shower or private balcony. Facing west, the sunsets are phenomenal. All bedrooms have air conditioning and a spacious bathroom, with hot water. You have the option of joining others in the common spaces or enjoying your privacy in your own room.
A new water purification system in the house ensures all water is safe and drinkable, and the house is run on solar energy. Ice is always available. Every bedroom has air conditioning. Screened windows and doors protect you from the mosquitos. Wifi is available in every room and all over the property, including by the pool. On-site staff provide cleaning services, security and assistance at all times. Laundry appliances are available to guests as needed. Fresh sheets and towels are provided as needed.
The climb up to the house from the beach may be somewhat challenging for those not used to walking in the heat or who have any kind of walking issues, but taxis are easily available, and can be called at any time to go to and from the house. Otherwise, a 5 - 10 minute walk gets you to the beach, the main street, and public transportation to other beaches, restaurants, bars, happy hours and shopping.
On-site private massages, at a very reasonable price, can be arranged.
Security - The house is walled in with an electronic coded entrance door and gate. There is on-site 24 hours security - Florencio, who is there to assist you in any way he can. Lia, who helps with the cleaning, would happily make you juices and breakfast for a very nominal extra fee.
Sonya, the business manager, who knows the area, can take you on tours of the area, also for a very reasonable rate. Surf? Dive? Hike? Sweat lodge? Like old ruins? She does this and more! Just ask her.
Either the lovely Sonya, or the owner, Najiya, will be there - (she comes and goes) they live on the property (both in separate quarters from the main house) and are available to answer any questions, help make activity arrangements, provide guidance on getting around, and suggestions for restaurants and night life. Cooking services and limited transportation services can be arranged for additional costs.
And if preferred by our guests, all staff can make themselves as scarce as possible - except for the general maintenance and cleaning of the house and grounds. You just have to let us know.
I would not consider this house "child proof" as there is an open pool area, several balconies, some steep stairs, spacey guardrails and lots of cool doodads, so it is not suitable for young children or toddlers. The main floor and suite is wheelchair accessible. Pets are not allowed except by previous arrangement and on a case-by-case basis.
Casa Camila is most suitable for families with older kids, groups of friends, couples, artist types that want some inspiration and space to create, and those who are looking for more privacy, tranquility and authenticity than the what the local hotels on the beach and the commercial resorts may offer.
There are several beaches both in and outside of the bay. La Ropa beach, considered the nicest in the bay, is only a 6-8 minute walk, where you will find joggers and walkers starting at sun rise. Yoga classes are available at different sites. Later in the day you can paddle board, go sailing, parachute gliding and jet skiing among other things. Or you can just sit on the beach and have your drinks brought to you by the local restaurants. Las Gatas beach can be seen from the house, but only accessed by a walking trail or a boat taxi from the wharf, and offers easy fun snorkeling and deep-sea fishing trips. Serious surfers prefer to go out to Troncones or La Saladita beach to catch the waves. Playa Larga offers sunset horseback riding and good food.
Loot restaurant/club is also only 5 minutes away, where you can get a good latte, fresh juices, simple and gourmet meals and see live music. There are other good, inexpensive restaurants nearby as well. Zihua is a great place to just walk around, shop and stop into a bar for a happy hour or a good meal by the sea.
If you are looking for more tranquility and privacy, then stay home, read a book, grill some fish, or cook a meal (or arrange to have it made) while you lounge by the pool and watch the parachuters glide by and the beautiful sunsets of every evening.
Little VW buses and larger vans, called "combis" will get you into town for about 50 cents from the main road. Taxis can be called at any time from the house or hailed on the street, and cost about $2.5 US in and around town and less than $5 US to Ixtapa.
