Property type house

About the property

4 spacious bedrooms, private bath, balcony, amazing view

I have just spent the last two years of my life fulfilling a long-time dream of building my own house near the sea. People always ask me why I picked Zihuatanejo, Mexico – a valid question. But I just tell them to look around. Casa Camila is built on a low hill on the central side of the Zihuatanejo bay facing west, out to the open Pacific sea. The view is so expansive that it takes your breath away every time you look at it. You walk up the entry stairs and turn around, and really, your breath stops, even if only for a micro-second. And that´s not just at sunrise or sunset…it´s every minute in between. The view is in every sense breathtakingly beautiful. A sense of calm and peacefulness immediately warms your senses. You may be woken by the chirping of the birds, or the squawking of the chachalakas (tree chickens), the braying of a donkey or the occasional barking of a dog, but otherwise it is usually very quiet and peaceful, with only the sounds of the sea and the immediate surroundings.

That´s why every room in the house was built to have that view every minute of the day. Situated in the lower hills overlooking the beautiful bay of Zihuatanejo, with a private infinity pool and open living/kitchen/patio area, it's the perfect place to slow down, reconnect with yourself and loved ones, get inspired, and get away from it all. It´s big enough to comfortably accommodate groups or individual and couples, but provides the privacy for everyone to relax on their own. It´s easy distances to the beaches, downtown and the crowds, but far away enough to not have to deal with the noises and chaos of the crowds.

If you are looking for a place where you can cook some of your own meals, either due to dietary restrictions or just simply not wanting to go out and eat restaurant food all the time, then you will be happy with the big open kitchen/living area in front of the pool. You can cook, drink wine, listen to music and lounge by the pool all at once. Assistance in food shopping will be provided on arrival if requested, and you can store and cook your food at leisure. Coffee and tea are on the house.

Two single rooms, and one suite with two bedrooms, (total of 4 bedrooms) make this house an exclusive and intimate, yet a comfortably spacious place to stay. Elegant simple furnishings and a king size bed make up every bedroom, (except the back room of the suite, which has a queen-size) and all guests have access to the open living, dining and kitchen space, beautiful pool area and a private office as needed. Sitting fairly high in the hills, each bedroom is surrounded by the deep greens of the tropics with an amazing view of the beautiful blues of the sea and the skies which can be enjoyed from your bed, sofa, shower or private balcony. Facing west, the sunsets are phenomenal. All bedrooms have air conditioning and a spacious bathroom, with hot water. You have the option of joining others in the common spaces or enjoying your privacy in your own room.

A new water purification system in the house ensures all water is safe and drinkable, and the house is run on solar energy. Ice is always available. Every bedroom has air conditioning. Screened windows and doors protect you from the mosquitos. Wifi is available in every room and all over the property, including by the pool. On-site staff provide cleaning services, security and assistance at all times. Laundry appliances are available to guests as needed. Fresh sheets and towels are provided as needed.

The climb up to the house from the beach may be somewhat challenging for those not used to walking in the heat or who have any kind of walking issues, but taxis are easily available, and can be called at any time to go to and from the house. Otherwise, a 5 - 10 minute walk gets you to the beach, the main street, and public transportation to other beaches, restaurants, bars, happy hours and shopping.

On-site private massages, at a very reasonable price, can be arranged.

Security - The house is walled in with an electronic coded entrance door and gate. There is on-site 24 hours security - Florencio, who is there to assist you in any way he can. Lia, who helps with the cleaning, would happily make you juices and breakfast for a very nominal extra fee.

Sonya, the business manager, who knows the area, can take you on tours of the area, also for a very reasonable rate. Surf? Dive? Hike? Sweat lodge? Like old ruins? She does this and more! Just ask her.

Either the lovely Sonya, or the owner, Najiya, will be there - (she comes and goes) they live on the property (both in separate quarters from the main house) and are available to answer any questions, help make activity arrangements, provide guidance on getting around, and suggestions for restaurants and night life. Cooking services and limited transportation services can be arranged for additional costs.

And if preferred by our guests, all staff can make themselves as scarce as possible - except for the general maintenance and cleaning of the house and grounds. You just have to let us know.

I would not consider this house "child proof" as there is an open pool area, several balconies, some steep stairs, spacey guardrails and lots of cool doodads, so it is not suitable for young children or toddlers. The main floor and suite is wheelchair accessible. Pets are not allowed except by previous arrangement and on a case-by-case basis.

Casa Camila is most suitable for families with older kids, groups of friends, couples, artist types that want some inspiration and space to create, and those who are looking for more privacy, tranquility and authenticity than the what the local hotels on the beach and the commercial resorts may offer.

There are several beaches both in and outside of the bay. La Ropa beach, considered the nicest in the bay, is only a 6-8 minute walk, where you will find joggers and walkers starting at sun rise. Yoga classes are available at different sites. Later in the day you can paddle board, go sailing, parachute gliding and jet skiing among other things. Or you can just sit on the beach and have your drinks brought to you by the local restaurants. Las Gatas beach can be seen from the house, but only accessed by a walking trail or a boat taxi from the wharf, and offers easy fun snorkeling and deep-sea fishing trips. Serious surfers prefer to go out to Troncones or La Saladita beach to catch the waves. Playa Larga offers sunset horseback riding and good food.

Loot restaurant/club is also only 5 minutes away, where you can get a good latte, fresh juices, simple and gourmet meals and see live music. There are other good, inexpensive restaurants nearby as well. Zihua is a great place to just walk around, shop and stop into a bar for a happy hour or a good meal by the sea.

If you are looking for more tranquility and privacy, then stay home, read a book, grill some fish, or cook a meal (or arrange to have it made) while you lounge by the pool and watch the parachuters glide by and the beautiful sunsets of every evening.

Little VW buses and larger vans, called "combis" will get you into town for about 50 cents from the main road. Taxis can be called at any time from the house or hailed on the street, and cost about $2.5 US in and around town and less than $5 US to Ixtapa.

About Najiya Shanaa

Fullfilling a long-time dream of owning a house by the sea. Worked as a clinical social worker and psychotherapist for the last 25 years in Washington DC...

Why Najiya Shanaa chose Zihuatanejo

I saw this property many years ago and immediately knew it was a special place.

What makes this house unique

My hope is to have a house where everyone feels welcome and comfortable. Its big enough for parties and group gatherings, and spacious enough so that everyone can also have their privacy and not feel over crowded.

Walking distance to the beach and restaurants, and a short cheap taxi ride away to downtown activities and night life. You can sit on your balcony, or float around in the pool and watch the parasailers go by, enjoy the green surroundings, and get lost (in thought) in the open sea...It´s a special place that I believe, once discovered, will be considered a jewel in hiding...

Definitely a Hidden jewel in Zihua

  • 5 of 5

We felt really lucky to have found Casa Camila. We wanted something close enough to the beach to walk, but far away enough to avoid the noise, and this was perfect for us! The view was amazing, and as advertised, takes your breath away. We loved waking up in the morning and sitting in bed or on our balcony with coffee, while the hummingbirds (among many other kinds of birds) buzzed around us. The living area and kitchen was beautiful and well stocked. The pool was a good size and the perfect temperature day and night. The hostess and the "staff" were helpful, knowledgeable and cheerful. The house is green built and has filtered water from the tap, which was a relief and a convenience. The individual rooms are spacious, bright, private and very comfortable..So nice to have air conditioning for the hot hours of the day!! This will be the perfect place to bring our families, or some other couples/friends to hang out and enjoy paradise...We felt honored to be some of the first people to rent, and will definitely be back!

Owner's Response: It was so nice to share Casa Camila with Mina and David, and I am so glad they felt comfortable and at home. I agree, the sun can be HOT in the late afternoon, so it´s nice to be able to retreat to the rooms with AC until the sun sets. We have now added hummingbird feeders to all the balconies - they really are entertaining, and much better than watching TV! Glad to hear they are coming back, they were fun guests - I look forward to sharing my home with them again!

Best house and view in all of Zihua!

  • 5 of 5

We are so pleased with our decision to rent Casa Camila for the week! Our group consisted of 4 adults and 2 teenagers and the house provided the perfect amount of space & privacy for all. Three of the bedrooms have a view of the bay with one of them sharing a bathroom and with a smaller but still spacious room off to the rear of the home.

We spent most all of our time in the infinity pool or on the pool deck looking out over the bay, enjoying the birds, watching the sunset and stargazing at night. The walk up to the house from the main road that goes through Playa La Rope is steep as it the walk up from the gate to the house. You will certainly get your workout in coming & going from the house.

The house manager Sonya’s involvement in our vacation truly made the experience for us. We contracted her services for booking all our excursions, most of our transportation, runs to banks, grocery stores, hired a chef to prepare the fish we caught at home and delivered more to a restaurant to be prepared for us. Without Sonya, we would not have felt as comfortable navigating the area, especially with the travel warnings.

The activities we would recommend are fishing with Hiram, the Picante catamaran cruise, surfing in Saladita, day trip to Playa Las Gatas, hiring a chef to cook a couple of nights, dinner at El Suspiro was AMAZING - food was probably the best we had but the sunset was breathtaking.

The food everywhere was just okay in our opinion so we will keep looking. Gianni’s at bottom of the street where Casa Camila is clean & close for an easy meal. The best places to eat Mexican are in downtown. We used Miriam for breakfasts at home & they were good!

If you fishing, make sure to get the fisherman’s sandwiches before getting on the boat. They were outstanding!

We will absolutely be back to Casa Camila!

February 2018

  • 4 of 5

We were a group of 8 and had a great time at Casa Camila. The house was very clean and comfortable and beautifully furnished. We loved having our own pool and space vs a condo and could be in the pool in the later evening and did not have to save pool chairs! The view of the bay from the deck was spectacular. Staff there were very friendly and helpful, I got spoiled having a maid to make beds, do dishes and sweep the floor daily. It was a very relaxing stay and would highly recommend Casa Camila for your next Zihua vacation. The beach was a short walk away, an easy walk down but a bit of a climb to get back to the house. There are cabs everywhere so that is always an option if you have trouble with the steep terrain. We would have liked backpack chairs to take down to the beach with us. Also the website says that airport transportation is included but we were not offered that service.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay Carla, the backpack chairs are added to the list of potential purchases though most guests seem to prefer the shade provided by restaurant parasols(I went ahead and added a parasol to the list also ;), thank you for the suggestion). Regarding the airport pick up, Casa Camila does offer a complimentary 4 person pick up and I myself have just started a 7 person pick up for an added fee. We offer the 4 person pick up free of charge and the remaining guests in the company are requested to take the taxi service offered by the airport. All guests are offered this service, when you were asked for your arrival information and offered the same service in our message conversation you declined the airport pick up letting me know your group would be arriving in two taxis from Ixtapa. Again thank you so much for your visit and your insightful suggestions. I hope to see you all again in the future. Kind regards, Sonya Yahyaoui on site property manager

Casa Camila was fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

The pictures do not do the house or the views justice. The house is fantastic with well appointed and beautiful rooms. Beds were comfortable and porches made for great views from your room. The pool was to-die-for and was where the real view of the bay was happening. Each morning began with a cup of coffee and a bird identification book. Lots of cool birds frequent the feeders and trees in the yard. The staff was friendly, more than expected, and efficient. Sonya was a great hostess for us. Prior the trip, safety was a concern amongst the group of women on this trip. One even dropped out a week prior. However, I can say we felt safe within the property fortress. And we felt safe walking to and from the beach and a couple of close restaurants--even in the evening. Taxi's were prevalent for those occasions that we needed them. I think all of us would visit Zihuatanejo again and would definitely stay at Casa Camila. We had some great tours in the area too and would recommend Luiz. Favorite restaurants were Carmelita's and Gianni's.

Casa Camila = AMAZING!!!

  • 5 of 5

This is the first time our group has been to Zihuatanejo. We have been going to Sayulita for the last 11 years or so but our little piece of paradise has become over run with tourists and the consequences of too many people in a town that couldn't handle all the new bodies. After a long search for a new spot we found Zihuatanejo! We chose to stay in La Ropa because it seemed to be the most rural of the 3 bays in Zihuatanejo. La Ropa has the best beach for swimming and just chilling out, you can rent chairs and umbrellas, stand up paddle board, etc.

Casa Camila was the perfect place to stay- walkable to the beach (10 minutes) and offers you everything you need if you simply just want to chill at home by the pool and enjoy the view. We had 5 people in the house and had tons of room to spread out, it never felt over crowded for us. The house is 3 levels and has 4 separate bedrooms and bathrooms. The bottom level is a separate studio with bathroom. The person staying here has access to the main house via the outside stairs up to the main level. The main level of the house has 2 separate bedrooms that are connected by a bathroom. The kitchen, dining and living room and pool are on this level too. The upstairs bedroom is the biggest of 4 rooms, it too has it's own bathroom. The property is maintained by Florenzio, he lives in the place just at the bottom of Casa Camilia and there is a cleaning person that comes daily (except Sunday). They are both on site until about 2pm every day.

If you choose to stay here you will not be disapointed! We all really , really loved the house. IT was hard to leave.

A few tips...

Load up on food at the Mega (no place to buy any food for the house in La Ropa)

The best places to eat in La Ropa are the Italian places: Gianni's and Jungle Pizza.

To get real Mexican food go to El Centro (downtown)!! 5 min cab ride and super cheap!!

A great beach house party location

  • 4 of 5

Lovely, modern, well maintained by friendly & helpful staff, this attractive, comfortable home is definitely one I will recommend to friends and family. The location is in a new neighborhood a short walk from the busy beach with its restaurants and water activities. Members of our group met for brunch & enjoyed beach walks, sailing, swimming and paddle boarding. I came to appreciate the retreat quality of the slight distance of our location from La Ropa Beach: the ability to “come home” to our cool, quiet, clean rooms - to sit out by the lovely pool, with a snack and a cold drink from our own kitchen. I especially appreciated the unlimited supply of filtered water for drinking and bathing, the fans & air conditioning system, the laundry machines and the solar panels that ran it all. The staff were very friendly, helpful & knowledgeable - truly an asset to our stay.
