About Merrie

Our names are Darrel & Merrie, we met in Williams & have been married 43 years. We have 2 grown children and 5 grandchildren. Merrie grew up in the area, and has always called it 'home', she loves the mountains, pines and the quiet pace of the location.

Merrie purchased this house in 2007

Why Merrie chose Grand Canyon

We purchased the land in 2002 and dreamed of the day we would see our cabin there on the property. We drew the plans and sub-contracted the construction beginning in 2005, the home was, for the most part, completed in 2007. We have enjoyed the process, and have been doing some finishing touches since then. We are confident you will enjoy the property, and make many happy memories there.

What makes this house unique

There is a peacefulness you'll feel when staying at our home, and the proximity to the Grand Canyon, Williams, Bearizona, The Grand Canyon Railway, Flagstaff and Sedona makes our home perfect for daily outings taking in all the sites. We enjoy taking the family to the cabin to enjoy the cool weather in summer. The smell of the pines, relaxing around the fire pit and taking walks in the forest, along with the occasional sightings of the deer, elk and antelope in the area are a welcome change of pace. The Kaibab squirrels that live in the neighborhood enjoy the handouts and are very entertaining. Winters are beautiful with the fresh snow, sledding and holidays in front of the fireplace with the scent of cedar wood, freshly baked cookies, coffee and hot chocolate. Christmas in Williams is a sight to see, with the lighting of the huge Christmas tree, and boarding the Polar Express is a joy for the kiddies, young and old. Bearizona Wildlife Park and The Deer Farm are a must see, near Williams, only a few miles away. (Sorry, we do not host pets in consideration of those with allergies)

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a gorgeous Getaway. I definitely recommend this lovely chalet for your next trip to the Grand Canyon or the Flagstaff area. A cozy home in either winter or summer. We found it to have a lovely well-stocked kitchen...perfect for our family getaway. The living & dining areas are very spacious and our group of 8 was easily accommodated. Thanks for a lovely time....we'll definitely be returning.

Beautiful!!!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is located in a perfect setting, close enough to drive to town but in a quiet setting away from the crowds of tourists flocking to the Grand Canyon. The people complaining of the train must be very light sleepers. It was not an issue for my family. My husband & I spent the week here with our teenage sons. We went to Sedona, Grand Canyon, fishing in Page/Horseshoe Bend, and the Arizona Snow Bowl chair lift. We saw elk, prong horned deer & mule deer right down the road on the field entering into the cabin. It was an amazing vacation with memories of a lifetime!! Thank you so much for sharing your cabin with us!!!!!

Owner's Response: WOW! You really were able to do and see a lot during your stay, so glad you had the opportunity to do those things, they are some of my favorites. The wildlife is abundant this time of year, and it is always thrilling for me to see them as well.

Truly a Home away from Home

  • 5 of 5

My bucket list included the Grand Canyon. But my desire was to have a comfortable place to rest my head at night. Our family found the perfect place to make that a reality in The Gateway Cottage. While all the pictures on the website are 100% accurate, the "feel" of this home is what makes this a perfect getaway, and no picture can capture the warmth and comfort that await you. There is absolutely no amenity that has been overlooked...from the totally equipped kitchen, the comfortable beds, the stacks of towels and blankets, to the full-size washer and dryer...you can sit back and enjoy the comforts of home in this charming cabin. Downtown Williams is quaint, the drive to Sedona is breathtaking, and of course, the Grand Canyon is an easy 45 minute drive away. Many people have mentioned the train noise, and while it is easy to hear the train, it is not in the least bit bothersome; don't let this deter you from considering this wonderful rental property. I cannot recommend it highly enough. You will not be disappointed! Thank you for making this vacation a truly wonderful experience.

Outstanding

  • 5 of 5

Two couples from Canada stayed 3 nights while exploring the area and visiting the Grand Canyon. This home was everything advertised and more. Beautifully set in a pine forest, 10 minutes from town, all amenities in place. The owners responded quickly to enquiries. Thanks for sharing this great property in this wonderful part of the world.

The home is beautifully furnished and well equipped.

The area around Williams, Arizona is beautiful. The town of Williams is very quaint and the people there are friendly. Highly recommend this property for its location due to it being close to Williams and only an hour from the Grand Canyon National Park. Pine County Diner is amazing for those seeking comfort food.

The cabin was perfect. The decor and amenities are spot on. Any return trips to the Grand Canyon will be spent at this property. It is abudantly clear that the owners care about their property and more importanly, their guests.

Thank you for making your home available to us.

Lovely interior, absolutely spotless home, super comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Two 50-ish parents and two teenagers happily spent three nights in the Gateway Cottage this past week - LOVED the home. The interior is open, bright and beautifully rustic - it reminded us all of many of the gorgeous homes we have rented in the Colorado Rockies over the years. The house is incredibly spotless - kitchen and bathrooms included. Among the much appreciated things: lots of extra blankets, pillows, towels and sheets; hooks everywhere in bathrooms, bedrooms and living room for jackets, pajamas, towels, etc.; really great decor with lots of bears, moose and other wildlife; DishTV with great music choices (we never watched a program, but always had music on); two comfy rockers on the front porch perfect for evening wine; playing cards for late night gaming. Washer and dryer are normal size - wonderfully convenient. Other folks have mentioned the train noise - it is most definitely there, and I would highly recommend earplugs. The train passes distantly, but because the environment is so quiet, you do hear it - and its horn - through the night. It awakened two of us, but the other two slept right through it, so it all depends how hard of a sleeper you are. Also - if you are mapping the distance from the home to "downtown" Williams, don't be misled (especially if you are from a congested area with a lot of traffic - like us). It's a very easy 10 minute drive. The highway speeds are around 75, and there is NO traffic, so you get everywhere very quickly. We went into Williams each night for dinner, and were there and back in a snap. You definitely need a car. But watch out for elk running in front of the car at dawn and dusk - the back roads around the house are very dark, peaceful and inviting to the local wildlife! P.S. Great star gazing abounds!

We provide all linens, kitchenware and utensils, some spices, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and spiced cider. Pine wood can be found on the lot for the outdoor fire pit, and wood for the fireplace can be purchased in Williams at Safeway or Circle K. In the back yard there is a large play set, and we are planning to add a horseshoe pit and additional shrubbery/landscaping next spring. Please come and enjoy yourselves here at The Gateway Cottage.
