About Cortona, the Tuscany region & Things to do in the area.

Cortona (10 miles away from the villa): recognized as one of the most fascinating villages of Tuscany, has incredibly managed to preserve its priceless heritage sites (various Palazzi, the Cathedral and the Diocesan Museum, where you can admire the beautiful Annunciation by Beato Angelico).

The city, enclosed by stone walls dating back to Etruscan and Roman times, sits on the top of a hill about 600 meters (1968 feet) above sea level, offering a spectacular view of the surrounding valley and Lake Trasimeno.

A visit to the beautiful Santa Margherita Sanctuary, patron of the city, and to the Girifalco Fortress should not be missed. Both are on the highest point on the hill and are easy to reach after a short, uphill walk.

There are many fabulous restaurants in the city, most offering traditional local and Tuscan cuisine (the Chianina cattle, one of Italy's oldest, high quality bovine breeds is bred in Valdichiana).

Arezzo (approximately 30 miles away): an extraordinary city of art renowned for its goldsmiths and antiques traders. The old town is home to valuable monuments including the imposing Medici Fortress, the Cathedral, the Diocesan Museum and the Basilica of San Domenico. The heart of the city is Piazza Grande, surrounded by buildings of various periods and styles - among them the Medieval towers and the Renaissance style Loggiato Vasariano. Not to be missed is their Antique market every first weekend of the month.

Val d’Orcia: About 20 miles away from the property (heading south-west) the beautiful Val d’Orcia region begins. This area of Tuscany boasts endless rolling hills covered with grain or sunflowers, a rich green valley and vineyards. It is no wonder that this territory, which stretches along the provinces of Siena and Grosseto, is protected as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Time seems to slow down for picturesque towns like Pienza, a real jewel known as the "Ideal City". On the west side of the valley are the walled medieval city of Montalcino (44 miles from the villa) and the vineyards of Brunello.

This region is very rich in high quality local products such as the "pecorino" cheese of Pienza (a typical cheese made with sheep's milk), the genuine olive oil, the gorgeous wine resulting from a long and ancient tradition.

Wine Paths: Great red wines are made in this area of Tuscany, Montepulciano and Montalcino are a must go for wine lovers. Montepulciano (which can be clearly seen from the villa’s garden and pool area) is only about 22 miles away and is distinguished from the many other historic “borgo” in Tuscany for its unique “underground” cantinas. Montalcino, already well-known for its fine red wines during the 15th century, has been made incredibly rich and famous by its Brunello wine, one of the world's best and most appreciated Italian wines.

The region also offers some of Italy’s finest thermal baths, such as the ones in Bagno Vignoni, Bagni di San Filippo, or Chianciano Terme.

Umbria Region

Perugia (abt. 21 miles away): with its Etruscan walls and gorgeous Medieval center, Perugia is not only a city for the gluttonous (re: chocolate), but for artists and art lovers alike. This splendid capital of the Region of Umbria is also a culture capital par excellence. Perugia also hosts renowned events, such as Eurochocolate and Umbria Jazz (mid July).

Beautiful villa with breathtaking views

  • 4 of 5

We had a group of 15 staying at the villa for 1 week and also held our wedding ceremony and reception on the grounds. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by stunning views of the countryside and lake below. The villa, garden, and pool were all beautiful and the house has rustic Italian charm with great amenities. It felt like paradise.

The staff at the villa was very helpful during our stay, especially Debora, the property manager, who was responsive anytime we had a question or if something wasn't working as expected. She worked hard to make our stay the best possible and also made sure the garden was spotless for our wedding.

The villa is conveniently located near Lake Trasimeno and a short drive to nearby towns like Cortona, Montepulciano, and others. It was only a 15 minute drive to the train station where we could take a train to Florence (about 1-1/2 hour ride). Siena was also only about an hour away. The villa offered the perfect home base for us as we traveled to nearby areas during our stay.

The villa owner, who is a wedding planner, was able to provide us with recommendations for a wonderful chef for the wedding and another dinner. She also helped connect us to other wedding vendors, which was extremely helpful. She was slow to respond as we were not wedding clients and not a priority, but we appreciated her help and taking the time to share the info with us.

A couple of things to be aware of:

While the villa is stocked with a full kitchen and other great amenities, it was not stocked with essentials such as hand soap in the bathrooms, enough toilet paper, garbage bags or laundry soap etc. However, the nearest store was only a 10 minute drive and we were easily able to stock up on these things. At the end of our stay, we also saw the cleaning crew take away bags of supplies that we had left behind for the next renters. Perhaps this is common in Italy, but it seemed strange to us. Just note that you'll need to purchase these things upon arrival.

Also, be very clear that you know what the house rules are before arrival. We only received the info a day before arrival and they were different than what we agreed to when we reserved the villa a year in advance and would have resulted in extra charges but luckily we were able to clear it up with the help of Debora.

I would recommend this villa to anyone with a group looking to have a lovely and relaxing week with family and friends.

Amazing and charming villa in the heart of Tuscany!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this villa as part of a family trip and fell in love with the property! The views are stunning, the villa charming, and the space was perfect for a group of 10. We even did the pasta making and pizza dinners - a hit with the entire group. The villa was an easy 10 min drive from the highway, about 25 min to Cortona, 1 hour to Siena, and 1 hr 20 min to Florence. We rented cars in Arezzo and then had them available for our entire stay. Everyone was incredibly accommodating and helpful - I would highly recommend this as a rental.

Gorgeous villa with beautiful views!

  • 5 of 5

This villa was truly magnificent! The views of the countryside along with views of the gorgeous lake were breathtaking… We were a group of 15 people and spent many of our days relaxing by the beautiful pool and dining al fresco each evening from the terrace, we also enjoyed delicious meals made by a local chef that was recommended by the owner. There’s even a brick pizza oven on the terrace, amazing! The place had plenty of room to accommodate our large group and the interior had a real rustic Italian feel to it, which I loved. When we decided to spend time away from the property (we never really wanted to leave) it was simple to travel to nearby cities such as the town of Cortona or Siena. I hope to come back soon!

Best of Central Italy

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a week at the Villa with our family of 5, and also hosted 5 other friends who came in from different parts of Europe. The house and property are fantastic to spend time with large groups of people. The furnishings are a nice combination of new and rustic. There is plenty of room to be together, or spend a few minutes alone. The swimming pool is refreshing during the hot summer days, and views at night from the balcony and front landing of the lake and stars are hard to beat. Dinner in the al fresco area on a few nights was a highlight as well, and one night we had home-made pizza by chefs who came to the property and cooked in the brick oven.

There are many day trips to do from this location, too many for one week. We chose Cortona, Siena, Assisi, Montepulciano, Pienza and the Lake Trasimeno area. All of these locations are within one hour's drive and wonderful to spend a day exploring the great food, architecture and history. The Villa is in a small town, so the Italian phrasebook came in handy when visiting local stores and restaurants, but this was a fun part of the adventure.

Highly recommended Villa for those who want a real central-Italy experience in a relaxed setting. Only wish we had booked a second week!

We were a family of 13, 8 adults and 5 children ages 12 to 18. The house was perfect, well equipped with modern appliances. Every room had shower stalls or shower over tub. Kitchen had two dishwashers. Pool was great. Excellent outside fireplace for grilling. Excellent location over looking a lake convenient to several historical cities
