Photo: Linda & visiting bull moose calf.
I (Jim) & my wife, Linda were born in 1953 in Lynn & Westfield, Massachusetts. I graduated from U. Mass. (Amherst) with a BA in Early Christian Theology (Latin & Greek) and Linda graduated 1st in her class from Paier Art School in Hamden, CT. We married in 1979 and have raised 5 children here. We enjoy our private, wooded location, do lots of gardening and keep chickens. We are spiritually minded (Catholics). We have always done things the simple, home way--home birth, home school, etc. We bake our own bread and raise as much of our own food as we can.
Jim and Linda Cunningham purchased this apartment in 1994
After a kidney transplant gave me (Jim) a new lease on life in 1992, our family decided to move to the woods near Jay Peak to be close to nature and as independent as possible. We are the only residence on a 1.5 mile long road. Nature abounds here. Once a bull moose calf visited our garden for weeks.
We bought these 21 wooded acres for privacy, peace, quiet and independence. We built our home and the neighboring 'Carmel Cottage' from scratch. Now that our 5 children have grown up and are raising their own families, we are still developing, having just completed renovating the top storey of our house into our second vacation rental, 'Carmel Loft.'
The loft comfortably slept 3 of us for our college roommate reunion ski weekend. It was warm and cozy, and Linda and Jim were gracious hosts.
Carmel Loft embodies many of the characteristics of rural Vermont that people travel so far to experience. It is cozy and woodsy with the faint smell of woodsmoke in the crisp air. A little taste of the rustic, practical lifestyle that is true Vermont. Jim and Linda are very accommodating and helpful, they might even lend you a pair of snowshoes if one of Vermont's famous Nor'easter's has you snowed in! I definitely recommend it, and am looking forward to staying there again.
I spent a week in the loft with my son this summer and was thoroughly impressed. I've stayed at a couple others in the area, but this was by far the best. It was very clean and Jim and Linda made us feel right at home. There is a lot to do in the area at any time of year. We visited a cider mill, the Cabot creamery, Ben and Jerry's, and a sugar house, just to name a few. My son loved it. It was a great experience. Thank you Jim and Linda.
Nice, clean, recently remodeled loft in a quiet, beautiful area! Jim and Linda, the caretakers/owners, were very pleasant and made our stay very special! We can't wait to visit again!
Our first visit to northern Vermont. The cozy Carmel Loft set the stage for a wonderful, memorable visit! We feasted on the local fare, saw the beautiful changing autumn leaves, visited such places as St Mary's church in Newport, the Von Trapp Lodge, and looked across the border into Canada.
Our trip also included visiting relatives and taking in the local culture, and walking through the small towns and talking with the local folks.
We will mark time from this trip and plan to visit the Carmel Loft/cabin again.
Our first time in this beautiful region of New England and we couldn’t have enjoyed the adventure more! From incredible “tree skiing” to experiencing Vermonter hospitality during several snow bank crashes in our little front wheel drive Honda, the adventure was certainly one to remember with fondness. Jim & Linda’s hospitality and friendliness were lovely. Please accept our most heartful thanks!
Carmel Loft (& Carmel Cottage) are near the northernmost peak in the Green Mountain Range in Vermont--Jay Peak. Jay Peak Resort offers skiing, snowboarding, indoor heated water park, ice skating and hockey rink, golf and much more. We are also close to other ski areas including Mt. Mansfield in Stowe and Smugglers Notch in Jeffersonville/Cambridge, VT. Owl's Head Ski Area is just north over the Canadian (Quebec) border.
Vermont's famous Long Trail begins nearby in N. Troy and runs south to the Massachusetts border. Other hiking trails abound.
Swimming and boating and fishing lakes and streams abound including nearby Lake Eden, Lake Memphremagog (an international waterway), Lake Willoughby, Crystal Lake and Lake Seymour. Swimming holes abound, many of which continue the age-old Yankee tradition of skinny-dipping.
The VAST snowmobile Trail is so close you can sled from our property right onto it and ride nearly forever.
For the contemplative, spiritual-minded, there are both a Benedictine and a Discalced Carmelite Monastery within 6 miles, the Benedictine nuns offering a completely Gregorian liturgy and Latin.
The autumn foliage is as exquisite here as anywhere in the world. Many nearby organic farms offer strawberries, vegetables, natural yogurt, goat cheese, maple syrup & candy.
