Description

Photos and Description of this 7 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Valdáliga - Palacio de Hualle

The 'Palacio de Hualle'. Wonderful gardens, views, close to restaurants

Beautiful, large 17thC villa-manor house, very comfortable and elegant, recently fully renovated to provide an unforgettable summer holiday rental on the green northern coast of Spain. The estate includes a vast park and gardens and a lovely little chapel. The big, beautifully decorated living room with fireplace and the dining room for twelve will provide the perfect setting for a gathering of family or friends. There are five spacious bedrooms as well as a study, TV room, small dining and several terraces, balconies and patios to enjoy the lovely views of green hills and fields with horses grazing nearby. A stream flows at the edge of the property where locals sometimes fish trout. This secluded village has one tiny café to try local sherry and “Serrano” ham, yet shops and restaurants with excellent seafood and meats and are less than 1km.away. Beautiful beaches are a 10 min drive away as are picturesque villages. Hike on ancient Roman Road in nearby hills, climb in Picos mountains.

Opera at Palacio de Hualle:

Opera Palacio de Hualle (Noches Líricas del Palacio de Hualle) will be held for the fifth season August 10 and 11, 2012. A beautiful concert in the covered patio of the Palacio, followed by a reception with a cocktail buffet and wines and sherry sponsored by Gonzalez Byass, producers of Tío Pepe pale dry sherry. Opera Palacio de Hualle is part of the Santander International Festival, one of the oldest and most prestigious summer festivals in Spain. The upcoming concert will be dedicated to baroque French opera. Four singers and five players will perform arias and pieces by composers such as Lully, Rameau, and Charpentier. The stonework of the tower and arches of the 17th C Palacio de Hualle serve as a beautiful backdrop for this exceptional and exclusive evening that celebrates early opera, Cantabrian countryside while opening to the public this beautiful manor house.

The Palacio de Hualle has been featured in various country house and decorator magazines.

Located in tiny village of Hualle: Note about the location: Actually not in Cabezon de la Sal, as the headline notes, but in a neighborhood of Treceño, Hualle. Hualle is a hamlet of about 25 traditional village houses. It is extremely peaceful. Nonetheless, well stocked shops are within walking distance.

Pastoral Cantabria Mansion

  • 5 of 5

This is a very large House in the tiny village of Hualle, a few km from the main freeway. The house itself is clean and perfectly well equipped with everything needed for a comfortable and extended vacation, including of course all modern appliances, phone & wifi. At the same time, it's thick stone walls, huge living and dining rooms, heavy wooden doors, and touches of antique furniture and art give a wonderful feeling of living in a 17'th century mansion. We loved it. Outside are spacious gardens, beyond which are lawns with horses, a small creek to stroll by and serene mountain views.

The house and estate are taken care of by a local housekeeper, Mari, who comes in daily to clean. She is extremely friendly and kind, but speaks only Spanish. The owner, Margaret, was happy to assist over the phone with translation to English when needed, and we even asked Mari to cook dinner for us once - it was nice to return home from a long day trip to the wonderful aromas of local dishes made by Mari.

The location is great if you have a car. A big supermarket and various dining options are minutes away. Within a 30 minute radius are many amazing medieval towns such as Comillas and Santillana Del Mar, prehistoric caves like Altiamira, and beautiful beaches of the Atlantic coast. A radius of an hour to an hour and a half will get you to Bilbao and the Guggenheim, as well as the magnificent canyons and mountains of the Picos de Europa.

One comment - the electricity in the house cannot support simultaneous usage of several appliances like dryer + oven. It would probably be a good idea to upgrade it.

Bottom line - this is a perfect retreat for a large family for exploring wonderful Cantabria. Thanks Margaret and Mari!

A magical multi generation family retreat

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful and charming and expansive house that was perfect for our three generations to stay for a week. The pictures accurately represent how well maintained and well appointed the house and grounds are. We found the place even more magical than we thought it could be. Multiple outdoor spaces to lounge about. Horses on the property to watch.

Every room has a comfortable chair, beautiful art, beds with lovely linens, and lots of space in the house in general.

What made it most special for us was Mari. She was there from the beginning with a smile and lots of spanish(it was good practice for us).

She cooked a delicious meal for us when we first arrived. And sorted babysitting on another evening.

We organised a special dinner one night. And while Margaret had kindly sourced and organised having a chef come in, we realised that Mari would make us a wonderful meal and it would be more relaxed. The whole thing was delicious. We found pasteleria de pedro in cabezon de la sal for scrumptious postre for the dinner.

We also found a three piece musical group who played a small concert for us. everything was really reasonable.

There is a little lane to walk about 1k in pretty woods to get to the next village. Or you can walk the road. The village is full of happy and helpful people, and you can walk to the town of treceno (along the highway) where you could get what you needed - a coffee, good bread, a supermarket, and an ATM.

Hualle is tucked away. It is mountainous and rural.

We drove to Comillas (15-20 minutes) multiple times. It's really easy.

We found awesome surf lessons on la playa de luana with Jose, right outside of cobreces.

We had a delicious meal at Marinero in San Vicente de baquero.

We went to an adventure park right beyond cabezon de la sal on an "off day" and the kids loved the ropes course.

Thanks Margaret for a truly magical week. We hope we will be back soon!!

Great place for a family stay

  • 5 of 5

Together with our three children we spent one week in the Gatehouse and really enjoyed it. The owners and neighbours are really friendly and helpful. Our children loved to play in the courtyard and to visit the neighbours.

The house is a great place for a family stay and there a lots of things to do in the surroundings (beaches, mountains, villages, mines, blacksmiths).

The best however were the rehearsals of the "Noches Liricas" which will be unforgettable for our daughter... :-)

9 days at Hualle

Well equipped ,comfortable, clean, individual and original in a beautiful area. Friendly owner and locals. We found much to do within quite a small radius . We loved the sound of cockerels, the horse and donkeys together with cowbells and all the local animals

Time seems to stand still in Hualle

  • 5 of 5

The Gatehouse is a nicely converted barn with two spacious bedrooms and enough living area for our family of four to rattle around in harmoniously. It is tastefully furnished with an adequately appointed kitchen where we could prepare breakfast and light meals. There are plenty of good and well-priced restaurants within a short drive so cooking was not high on the agenda during our stay. The small outside terrace adjoins the entrance to the main manor house but is private enough to sit and enjoy the sunshine, the sound of cow bells and the peace of the village. We were warmly welcomed by Mari the housekeeper who showed us around the house and left us with the keys to make ourselves at home. Although we did not need her during our stay, she lives close by in case of questions or an emergency. The house has a lovely outlook from both sides; one looking over the field of horse and donkeys and to the fields and mountains beyond. The village is tiny and quiet but only a 10 min walk to a good grocery shop and butchers. We enjoyed being 10 mins drive to several beautiful beaches and near to great sightseeing in all directions: Soplao Caves, Altamira Caves, Comillas, Santillana, San Vicente and the mountains. It was hard to believe we were only 45 mins from Santander Airport; when we headed back home after a fortnight, we felt as if we'd been in Hualle for months.

We had a fantastic time here. Time to learn some spanish so we can immerse ourselves further next time.

The beautiful beaches Oyambre and Gerra (great surfing!) are a 10 min drive away as are the picturesque villages Comillas, San Vicente de la Barquera and Santillana. You may hike on the ancient Roman Road in nearby green hills , climb in nearby Picos de Europa mountains, kayak or fish in Sella or Deva rivers. Browse the markets for the freshest produce, local cheeses and cured hams, sausages. There are wonderful little restaurants in the region noted for the excellent seafood and meats. Explore prehistoric caves with wall paintings. The young people will love the superb aquarium in Santander or the nearby safari park. There is a wonderful golf course in Santa Marina and in Oyambre. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is just over an hour away. Or just relax and sip a local sherry in the little cafe in our own village, Hualle.

Ryan Air has regular flights to Santander airport from the United Kingdom.

Other Activities: Kayaking, explore prehistoric caves

Golf: The Real Club de Golf de Oyambre. It is the first golf course created in Spain, in the late 19th C. It was created for the use by the King of Spain, Alfonso XII, and his entourage, who spent some holidays in the area. It is a 9 hole course, right next to the sea, but very pretty. Rental of equipment is available.
