Chateau Calvayrac dates from the 13th century and nestles in eight hectares high above the River Lot with expansive views over the valley, vineyards, and the village of Prayssac.

The chateau has a fascinating history. It was built in local Quercy stone in the era of Eleanor of Aquitaine, who is reputed to have visited the chateau. It remained in the De Soudrie family for 8 centuries and then was bought by Mme Piquet and her French General husband. Guests will be able to read more about the chateau during their holiday.

It has been English owned since 2001 and has been sympathetically restored and is traditionally furnished, retaining the historical and unique regional character of the house.

Accommodation:: The long front terrace opens into the house through the main entrance with a second entrance stepping up to the lobby.

Adjacent to the lobby is the splendid kitchen with large table and chairs and two sofas to relax by the fireplace. The kitchen is well-equipped with range cooker, fridge/freezer, double sink and a range of electrical equipment.

There is a washing machine, second dishwasher and utility sink unit situated in the lobby.

Doors lead through to the grand formal dining room which has a central fireplace and access into the main sitting room.

The main reception room is light and spacious with a central fireplace and also opens into the central hallway. This and the Dining room have windows from which the spectacular views over the Lot and the surrounding countryside can be enjoyed

There are two double bedrooms on the ground floor, one of which is the Master bedroom with a four poster bed and an en-suite bathroom. Separate WC.

Accommodation & grounds: The charming central hallway has a wide winding staircase leading to a light spacious gallery that has bar football, tv, and a fun hammock.

The family bedroom has a king size bed and a French single bed.

There are three twin bedrooms

On entering the walled courtyard to the side of the house, two doors enter into the vaulted above ground cellars, one of which is available for guests to enjoy meals out of the hot sunshine.

The large doors of the cellar open into the grounds. Within the grounds there are two small ponds and there is a further round terrace below the main terrace.

The 15 x 6 pool is set below the house in a grassed area in full sunshine with a range of sunshades and an arbor for shade.

There are many mature trees for guests to find shade, and the walled courtyard is also ideal for “al fresco” meals.

Guests are invited to partake of any produce that may be growing, and also to freely explore the 8ha/20acre grounds including woodland

The caretakers live in a cottage close-by and are on hand for advice and information.

Why Sue Eaves at Halcyon Leisure chose Prayssac

Chateau Calvayrac is located in a fabulous position above the Lot river, offering unparallel views of the valley whilst one dines or relaxes on the terrace. Calvayrac offers peace and privacy, set in 10 hectares of land, it is mostly woodland, however, the gardens have lovely terraces and well kept borders and hedges.

There is a large saltwater pool and guests can help themselves to the herbs, tomatoes, strawberries, figs etc. which we grow. The house itself is situated above impressive raised vaulted cellars, one of which is for guests to enjoy. The house was purchased by us in 2001 having had only two previous owners in its 700 year history. We also acquired the entire contents which include many Quercy antique pieces - we have sympathetically restored the house maintaining its unique character and all the contents (but with a few fun additions too!). We can confidently say almost all guests come away with the comment that Calvayrac offers something special.

Fabulous Family Vacation

We had a wonderful stay at Chateau Calvayrac with our three children (10, 13,16.) Every day we played cards on the veranda overlooking the vast valley...with the Lot River running through it with vineyards hugging its banks. We loved relaxing each afternoon, watching the sunset after busy days of either visiting castles, boat riding and swimming, or walking through medieval towns. One day we drove to Albi to catch the 18th stage of theTour de France (July.) It was so exciting. The chateau is extremely spacious and very well appointed. The gounds are beautiful. My 10 year old's favorite thing to do, besides looking at the stars through the massive telescope each evening, was to go down to the herb garden to snip fresh herbs for the meals we cooked in the very authentic french country kitchen. My daughters loved curling up at night with their books with the breeze coming through the windows. It is a very warm and relaxing atmosphere and you immediately feel at home. Getting around the area by car is very easy and everything to do and see is within driving distance. There is a grocery store minutes from the chateau. There are also some great restaurants within minutes of the Chateau. Our family loved staying at the chateau and in the Dordoyne River valley area. The owners are very well informed about what there is to do in the area and they were great in helping us plan our trip. There were several travel books in the chateau that helped us plan our days. It was a great place for a very special family vacation. One we will never forget and hope to do again. We would choose to stay at Chateau Calvyrac again.

My Stay at Chateau Calvayrac

I recommend Chateau Calvayrac without hesitation. I’ve stayed there several times and have booked a week this year too. This is a fantastic place to stay, for any occasion, whether it’s a cosy romantic break, a group birthday get away or summer holiday with the family by the pool , it really has something for everyone. Each room is beautifully decorated to the highest standard and yet very cosy and homely. The facilities are impeccable, the gardens and pool are spacious and the views are stunning. There are local markets and restaurants which are fantastic, and the country side is beautiful. The weather has always been great and i have fond memories of warm summer evenings, eating al fresco on the terrace, overlooking the River Lot.

Paradise in the Lot Valley!!

We stayed at Chateau Calvayrac for a week in August 2008 and had an absolutely fabulous time. Our party consisted of two families - 4 adults and 4 children in total.

The chateau is a beautiful property that is full of character and history. It is located in a spectacular setting, high on a hill overlooking the village and the local vineyards. The panoramic views from the terrace are majestic, so much so that we ate dinner outside on the terrace every night. We kept talking about going out to a local restaurant, but we just couldn't imagine finding a better place to have dinner than on the terrace. In fact, that's the lasting memory I have of our time there - sitting on the terrace, enjoying dinner with family and friends over a glass of wine, and taking in the scenery as we watched the sun set ...

The chateau is large and has plenty of rooms to explore. It is a unique structure and a little bit quirky (in a fun and positive way). You just don't get places like this in Dallas! Although the kitchen is fairly small (compared to the rest of the house), it was more than adequate for our needs. As I mentioned above, we cooked all of our dinners while we were there. (By the way, the local supermarket is very close and the produce in the local markets is exceptional.) The house has several bedrooms and some great attractions for the kids, like a fusball table, a table tennis table, etc. One of the kids' favorite places was the huge cellar, where the ping pong table was located. There was even a dinner table set up down there.

The house was vey clean and well-maintained. The caretakers are very friendly and stopped by on several occasions to make sure that all was well. They even brought fresh vegetables from their garden for us to eat.

The grounds are wonderful. The kids had a great time running around and exploring them. We played a lot of boules, swam in the pool, and enjoyed some lovely walks.

We found plenty to do in the area. We rented bikes in Prayssac and cycled along the river to Albas (one of my favorite villages) for lunch. We rented canoes in Puy L'Eveque (another favorite village) and canoed down the Lot. We toured some local vineyards and sampled the local wines (which are fabulous and very reasonably priced).

In conclusion, I would strongly recommend Chateau Calvayrac for anyone looking for a relaxing vacation in a spectacular setting. I hope to have the chance to return to there with my family sometime soon.

The principal cities are Toulouse and Bordeaux. Between these two are major towns including:

Cahors: County town of the Lot and once a vibrant university town. Home of the dark red wine known as Cahors Noir. It has a charming town centre and the notable landmark of 14c Pont de Valentre

Prayssac: With it's memorable marble statue of Venus, it is a lively village with an excellent Friday market and a good range of shops, restaurants, cinema and an informative Tourist information office.

Catus: Once the site of a 10c priory and with a 12c Chapter house, it has an excellent leisure lake, children's adventure playground and a small range of shops.

St-Cirq-Lapopie: One of the prettiest villages in France sitting dramatically 330ft above the Lot. Once owned by a 7th century bishop and once the home of surrealist Andre Breton. Many artistic shops and wonderful architecture.

Generally quieter than most regions, the departments covered are Lot-et-Garonne, Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot & Dordogne. there is something is here to suit all the family, including: fishing, tennis, walking, golf, cycling, horse-riding, lake swimming, windsurfing, canoeing and much, much, more. Normally the area has a moderate climate with long Spring and Autumn seasons and Summers that can be very hot. Essentially it is the heart of farming land and you can expect to see lush landscapes with spectacular fields of sunflowers, maize and tobacco and all through the year a wonderful variety of changing colours and hues.
