An enthusiastic New York and Harlem resident, always ready to give the inside scoop and recommendations on Harlem or NYC. Very involved in the neighborhood. A product, landscape and interior designer with numerous awards and items in national museums. In fact, the building has also been published in several magazines and appeared in films. A world traveller, as I flew for Pan Am for over 7 years. Partner at the popular Harlem Shake, a restaurant I designed.
Dennis Decker purchased this apartment in 2000
This building is typical of the historic neighborhood. I was impressed that it still retained so much of its original form and material. However, I was very impressed by the atmosphere of the block, with friendly, open and involved neighbors.
The quiet friendly tree-lined street, proximity to express subway- only 4 stops to Times Square, closeness to neighborhood coffee shop and historic park, as well as the 125 St. corridor and Central Park.
I actually love sitting on the front stoop while having a coffee or a glass of wine. I love seeing the relaxed street life going by, and being a part of it. Since my block is dominated by private brownstones, rather than apartment buildings, it has a friendlier, small town feeling than most other neighborhoods.
Harlem Hideaway was a fantastic choice for our home away from home. Dennis is amazing and was helpful throughout the entire process. We are sad to be leaving and cannot wait to return.
We had a great time @ the Red Rooster our first night and the breakfast wraps @ Cafe Latte are a must!
We loved staying in Dennis' beautifully decorated apartment. It was cozy and warm inside, even though the weather was cold outside. Friendly neighborhood, wonderful restaurants right around the corner and down the street. Close to bus line and subway. I want to come back with my daughter and do some serious NYC shopping. Thank you Dennis for creating such a welcoming environment for visitors to NYC.
Dear Dennis, thanks so much! We have had a wonderful time here and as we told you we will definitely be back. Harlem, the "119 Street" is a perfect and safe neighborhood. The Parlor is very unique in style. All the little things, the decor, the touch of BAUHAUS made your house so loveable. You are a remarkable host. We had a great time! And a great NYC-Marathon!
Absolutely loved the apartment and Harlem ! A beautiful brownstone , traditional , New York building with so much character and style .Every creature comfort was provided and we ( including 18year old son ) loved it ! Harlem is a fantastic area to stay and felt perfectly safe exploring .Commute into city centre is so easy , only about 19 mins to Times Square on the tube .Wish we had more time to explore the immediate area but did get to experience a gospel chapel service which was great .Good eating places nearby as well .Would live to return and would definitely stay here again .Thanks Dennis for a fantastic New York experience .
This was my second stay here and I love this place, this location, and will stay again
Great apartment very comfortable and full of quirky things. Every effort made to giver the holiday maker wonderful experience. Good restaurants all within walking distance of the apartment. The 7 day subway pass a must and a bargain.
However it would have been helpful to have instructions for the excellent electrical appliances (so different from the UK ones). Also a slip mat in the bath just to prevent any accidents when showering.
Overall a superb holiday was had by both of us
To the core: we are working out another stay at Dennis¨ house for this year.
Do you need more information? With my wife we were there last June, a two weeks stay in the wonderful Harlem. As many times, a house is a projection of his owner and this house is a masterpiece. Also it is his home and that do a big difference. Dennis is helpful at any unusual need and always ready to add much more than expected.
The parlor is well equipped, confortable, artistic. It is homely.
The block is residential and around the corner are markets, stores, delis and street food. The buses stop is at 100 meters, an excellent option for sightseeing the city. The subway station at three blocks, quick to the south.
I shall not take your time writing about NYC; everywhere the information is available. Perhaps I can tell you something about Harlem. At evening, when we return from a full day walking on the streets, physically exhausted and emotionally plenty, arriving to Harlem was like to an oasis, where the life slow down to senses and spirits. The Harlem´s people made us feel as in our own neighborhood and Dennis¨ house as at our home.
