Overview

About the property

Completely renovated Capitol Hill English basement in historic townhouse located on quiet block across the street from beautiful park. Can't be closer to National Mall (house is on 2nd St. and US Capitol is on 1st St)! Also 1.5 blocks to DC subway, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, and plenty of bars and restaurants. 5 blocks to famous Eastern Market and Barracks Row. Less than mile to Nationals baseball games. Arguably the best location in DC.

The space

This historic home was built in 1890 but has been completely renovated, while maintaining it's original charm. New kitchen with granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and soft close cabinets. New bathroom with carrera marble tile and chrome finishes. 50 inch television with full cable package and high speed internet. The unit is 750 sq feet and has 10 windows, allowing tons of natural sunlight. There is a separate bedroom with a brand new queen bed. The living room has a new queen sleeper sofa from West Elm and single person daybed. Huge brick patio surrounded by hedge overlooking the park.

Guest access

Guests will also have access to a large, brand new patio with cushion furniture. The space is fenced in and private, we just ask that our guests respect the neighbors and keep the noise down after dark.

Interaction with guests

The doors have keypad entry and you will be given a code a few days before your stay so will be able to check-in and check-out without having to meet up with the hosts. However, we love to meet new people and share our favorite things about our city so we'll be happy to meet with you and help you in any way we can.

The neighborhood

Capitol Hill is the largest historic residential neighborhood in DC. Our neighborhood is extremely walkable and safe, just 2 blocks from the National Mall including the Capitol, Library of Congress and Supreme Court. We're located on a large, quiet park but with restaurants, bars, and coffee shops a block away. There are also public tennis courts, volleyball courts, bocce pits, and children's playgrounds within a 5 minute walk. The Nationals' baseball stadium is less a mile away and easily walkable as well.

Getting around

Capitol South metro (DC's subway system) is 1.5 blocks away which you can take to get almost anywhere in the city and surrounding cities (Arlington VA, Alexandria VA, Bethesda MD, etc). There is also a Bikeshare station located here where you can rent bikes for about $8/day and return them at any station in the city. We'll provide you one free parking pass so you can park anywhere in the neighborhood and many surrounding neighborhoods. Additional parking passes are $50 each. Reagan National Airport (DCA) is a 10 min taxi ride or you can take the metro.

Comfort & Convenience

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for an affordable, comfortable apartment in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood just blocks from sites, shopping, dining and the metro, look no further. Our family enjoyed our stay so much, my teenage kids were asking if we could come back next year as we were packing the car to leave.

Clean, private, convenient

  • 4 of 5

This basement apartment was clean and peaceful, convenient to Capitol Hill for my DC trip to lobby with my professional organization. I enjoyed the pleasant walk down D Street both to Eastern Market area restaurants, and the 3 block walk to the Capitol South Metro station. Some noise from upstairs does reverberate in the basement, but the night was quiet. Kitchen very up to date and set for cooking. Lovely shower and bathroom. Kristin was very responsive. Great stay!

Truly A Home Away From Home!

  • 5 of 5

We visit DC a lot, and since having a child, hotel living is just not an option. Capitol Hill is one of our favorite places to be and this place could not have been more perfect! If you truly want to experience what life in DC is all about, and be within walking distance to everything, including the metro, this place is perfect. This suite made us feel immersed in the city, and like we were staying at a relative's house. It's the little things that count as well, like the kitchen already having salt and pepper, olive oil, a wine opener, coffee, extra trash bags, dishwashing soap, hand soap, dishwasher liquid, laundry detergent, plethora of toiletries, all the little perfections that made it feel like a home to us. Things that you often forget when going on vacation that quickly become an annoyance, like you are cooking and forgot to grab salt and pepper or olive oil. It is also very clean, beautifully remodeled, and the kitchen is fantastic. Some of the reviews say that you can hear everything upstairs, understand that this is an English basement in a beautiful old home, this is part of the character and part of 'city living', a little music or tv drowns out the noise. Our 2 year old didn't even wake up to the minimal noise upstairs. Kristin is an excellent host, very responsive, and will do anything to make your stay the best it can be, we even had a parking pass which is crucial in DC. We will absolutely stay here again!

Our unit was clean, cozy, and very convienent to the Capital and Mall

  • 5 of 5

Our host was excellent at comminicating. She gave us the door code to get in and we entered into our basement apartment which is about 1/2 under and 1/2 above ground, so natural lighting could get in. The queen bed was very comfortable and whole place was very cozy. In three to 5 minutes we could walk to the metro and get almost anywhere in the city in minutes. It felt very safe, and even though there was a park accross the street that had some homeless, they kept to themselves and did not approach us. Our host was happy to help with recommendations and was very accommodating, even allowing us to leave our luggage in the unit while we got lunch after check out, so we did not have to bring it with us. I would stay here again without hesitation. Occasionally we could hear the pitter patter of little feet overhead which to us is what VRBO is all about. We are in someone’s home, and we felt welcome while at the same time, our privacy was honored. Wonderful stay and when we come back to DC, this will be the first place we will try to book! Thank you for a great home away from home.
