Air conditioned, large terrace with covered eating area, fantastic views

Completely renovated to a very high standard, this is an independent top floor apartment in a two storey villa which stands alone at the entrance to the gated Domaine. All windows and doors have retractable fly screens & there is air conditioning. The sun is on the terrace most of the day where there are two loungers, gazebo with teak table and chairs, and gas BBQ. Double doors open onto the lounge with DVD player, satellite & 32’’ plasma TV, iPod dock & CD player, WiFi connection, a dining table for two and a big comfy Chesterfield sofa. Kitchen: washing machine/dryer, dishwasher, fridge (small freezer compartment), electric oven, grill & halogen hob. V&B crockery, Saint Andrea cutlery, lead crystal glassware. The corridor leading to the bedroom has a separate guest WC. Bedroom: a large pocket sprung double bed (twin beds on request) with Frette linen, a second 26’’ plasma TV, and modern provençal furniture. The en suite has a rain shower, toilet, & Egyptian cotton towels are supplied. French doors lead from the bedroom to a small terrace with a table & 2 chairs.

The property offers a large terrace with a covered eating area from which you get a perfect view onto the hilltop village of St Paul. It stands in a gated small secure Domaine, and offers privacy while allowing you to benefit from common areas such as the pool.

It is a little gem, both the setting, the location, the size, the tasteful decor with its beautiful combination of aesthetics and practical;ity, all the facilities you offer and, importantly, the ease of making arrangements with you and your impeccable welcome book/instructions. You clearly know what you are doing! We would recommend your home without reservation other than the fear of helping to make it so popular we might never again have access :)

The stereo system in the lounge is an iPod docking device and CD player. The parking is just by the property, and the pool is some 2 minutes away on foot and measures 15m*7m with a graduated depth from 1.30m to 2.10m.

Home from home

As we had loved our stay at The Gatehouse previously we came back again for a second visit.

Decorated and furnished to a very good standard ,it really is a home from home, with lots of nice touches: books, very good kitchen equipment and an extremely comfortable bed. The terrace is ideal for relaxing, with a view up to the village of St Paul de Vence (visit in the evening after most of the visitors have departed).

The domain itself is quiet and very safe , with ample parking. The pool is very welcome at the end of a hot day .

We would highly recommend The Gatehouse - Michael and Melissa are thoughtful hosts who are very helpful.

The Gatehouse offers a tranquil,well equipped and tastefully appointed base from which to explore the area. We found it to be comfortable and maintained to a very high standard. Supplied with a good selection of books and wi fi /satellite , you could be tucked away in great comfort here and be very well rested.The Domaine itself is private and feels a long way away from the bustle of the Riviera.The terrace is a lovely spot to relax and look at the mountains and also the sea. Our visit was early in the year so we didnt use the pool,although it did look attractive.A car is essential - keen cooks will find the kitchen has just about everything you need but St Paul , beautiful though it is,is not the place to shop unless you want souvenirs or art. We would not hesitate to recommend The Gatehouse and would happily return.

Exploring Côte d'Azur

The property is well presented and very well equipped. Comfortable, clean and attractive with a brilliant welcome pack! A perfect position for touring the Nice area. St Paul de Vence is a 20 minute walk with quaint shops and great restaurants. Nearby Vence is also worth a visit. The owners are readily available on email or phone and quick to respond to any queries. We spent 3 days cycling out of Nice and would thoroughly recommend cottage and region.

The apartment was lovely and just as we had expected. Nicely modernised with everything needed for the stay. The bed was comfy and everything was spotlessly clean. Not a lot of space for lying in the sun but you can do this up at the communal pool. A good sized supermarket is not far down the road and lovely picturesque hill towns to visit not far away. We would definitely stay again.

The perfect place to stay!!

The Gatehouse is ideal for a couple wanting to explore the area. A car is essential, although it is only a short drive to most of the towns - so many places to visit. After a long day exploring it was lovely to get back to the comfort of the Gatehouse.

The apartment has everything you need with a little touch of luxury - spotlessly clean. A really comfortable bed with luxury bed linen, towels etc. Clean modern kitchen and bathrooms.

There is a large patio area, ideal for barbecues with lovely views.

The communal pool is large and well maintained - unfortunately the weather was cool for the time of year, on this occasion we were not able to use the pool.

Michael and Melissa provided us with a welcome hamper, it was really appreciated. Booking was straightforward, excellent information pack - thanks to you both.

If you want somewhere special to stay, book the Gatehouse - we have already booked again for July!

Recommended - charming luxury place for two...

My husband and me enjoyed a very pleasant stay we had in The Gatehouse in September.

The cottage is lovely – you can trust the pictures and the description on this website.

We appreciated the quality and taste of the décor as well as practicality of the place.

The kitchen is very well equipped – this was something we were specifically looking for as we like cooking from the local produce.

The terrace is spacious and with all necessary furniture, the view from the terrace is a highlight of your stay.

The residence is quiet, located walking distance to Saint Paul (you can pop up to the village around 6pm when most tourists already left but galleries are still open). The Gatehouse itself is close to the road that gets busy on weekday around 9am and then 5pm but it’s not very disturbing. The pool is a sensible size and most of the time there were nobody using it!

The location is very convenient – you have plenty of picturesque top hill villages and attractions within 30-50 km distance, same for the beaches (if you fancy this cost).

In September it wasn’t crowded and the weather was up to bearable 30 degrees. We didn’t have to use air condition at all.

Melissa and Michael made all very well organized – they are very responsive and clear, you’ll get all necessary information and directions over email, there are information about the region ready printed out in The Gatehouse, tourists guides in English available and a good internet connection (just take your laptop or smartphone).

I'd wish to find more places like this...

St Paul is a medieval hilltop walled village located some 25 minutes from Nice airport, and easy driving distance from Antibes, Cannes, and St Tropez in one direction, and Eze, Monaco and Italy in the other, and close to the Alpine ski slopes. Since the 1870's the area has attracted leading painters – Cezanne, Monet, Van Gogh, Bracque, Picasso, Rouault, Rothko, César. In the 1950’s the leading lights of the French entertainment world followed – Simone Signoret, Yves Montand, Jean Paul Belmondo - as well as Hollywood stars - David Niven, Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum, Cary Grant - and more recently Roger Moore, Sean Connery and Rod Stewart. The Colombe d'Or restaurant is testimony to this legacy, with painters leaving their work in lieu of payment and stars their photos on the walls. This is reflected locally by the numerous art shops & galleries , and museums: Maeght foundation, Matisse (his Chapelle des Blancs in Vence is certainly worth a visit), Renoir, Picasso.

Other Activities: Art Galleries.

Ski: The ski slopes at Greolieres are ideal for skiers who are less confident or beginners. More taxing runs are within easy reach at Auron or Valberg, and further afield at Isola on the Italian Alps.
