For my wife and I, this spot was perfect. The river, the hot tub, the cabin itself were exactly what we were looking for to get a little off the grid for a few days. The WIFI was a nice touch for when we wanted to check in on the rest of the world, and the free long distance land line allowed us to call either friends and family or a restaurant in town. Honestly, it was great. All the features of the cabin (dishes, sheets, towels, etc...) were as advertised so all you need to do is bring your clothes and some food. Bill was helpful and friendly, and made some good recommendations for things to see and do in town. We spent the majority of our time in Shenandoah, which was more than I was expecting, but also ate at Brookside twice (which was probably one of the best places in town) and Uncle Bucks, and we went to the caverns for about 1/2 of a day which was amazing. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because of the smell in the water. The sulphur gives it a sharp and somewhat unpleasing odor. It's not going to hurt you in any way, it just stinks. FORTUNATELY, the hot tub does NOT smell like that and there is a Britta filter on the sink in the kitchen, which is an enormous help. All that said, I would recommend that everyone and anyone stay here. It's a great spot to stay put at or use as a base camp for heading out for adventures in town. Thank you Bill and Peggy, it was truly great!

Loved This Quaint Little Mountain Hideaway!!

  • 5 of 5

We ( family of 4) spent three wonderful days at this property! We enjoyed the beautiful view and easy access to the Shenandoah River in the backyard! The property was private and the hottub in the enclosed screened porch was amazing! ** The only issues we encountered were a slight sulphur smell from the well water plumbing;however, we were fully aware of this prior to our arrival and planned accordingly. Also, the shower was very slippery and my son slipped and fell during the last night of our stay! ** Suggestion!! Bring a no-slip mat for the tub**. Thanks so much to Bill & Peggy !

Owner's Response: I'm glad to hear you had a good time and enjoyed the cabin. I'm terribly sorry about your son falling in the shower. It's a relatively new (past 5 years) tub with a non-slip textured bottom. Will have to see what other feature can be added.

Stepping Stone Cabin: A great base for adventure

  • 4 of 5

Mountainside, riverfront escape, that was this two bedroom, very cute cabin for we two adventurous ladies. Marked well with a sign on the right side of the gravel road, Stepping Stone Cabin’s circular driveway greets you making for an easy in and out. On the covered back porch you can indulge in the roomy hot tub away from bugs and critters. Vacation cooking was easy in this ample kitchen which included pots, pans, etc. Coffee and breakfast on the back porch was anticipated each morning at the roomy table. A notebook of information was handy and well used.

Tall trees teeming with bird life on the large well shaded lot lush with grass was a pleasure. Horseshoe pits beacon completion. A welcoming, roomy fire pit area is a comfortable place as the night surrounds you with fireflies and haunting night callers. The Whip-Poor-Will sang nightly at dusk.

Stairs on the right side of the yard take you to the river bank for a private, beautiful view of the meandering Shenandoah River framed by mountains, wide and proud right behind the cabin. Tennis shoes make the steep trek down the left side of the bank easy where we put in our inflatable kayaks. Tubes and a canoe are available at the cabin. Wading in the river and searching through the river rock on the gravel bank was an activity I enjoyed as well.

The Skyline Drive, Shenandoah River State Park, Shenandoah National Park, George Washington National Forest as well as so many other places are close. Arrowhead Lake was a hidden gem. One note of caution as you travel, we were caught in flash floods in Luray, the day the West Virginia floods happened, so be sure have your weather radio and do not cross over any flooding streets. The weather in the mountains can change quickly. And for a flatlander, it was very exciting, but dangerous at times.

Internet was good, if you drive back up the road (about two minutes) to the Shenandoah Outfitters, your cell signal should be good. There is a landline phone. The TV is DISH cable. There are two AC window units which was sufficient. I would love to stay at this cabin again, and I would recommend this cabin for renting. The price was good and reflected the condition and amenities. The owners were available, hospitable, and friendly. Stepping Stone Cabins make a great base as a stepping stone to adventure in the Shenandoah Mountain area!

Great view, fun river cabin for the family

  • 5 of 5

Recently stayed here with my husband and our two daughters (a 3 year old and a 1 month old). Very fun week, went tubing and canoeing in the river, and fishing. Spent a lot of time just chilling in the yard enjoying the view, and making smores over the fire. The cabin is comfortable, and the screened in porch is awesome, as is the hot tub. There are definitely bugs, so bring some citronella candles and bug spray and you'll be fine. We also used the gas and charcoal grills, worked great. It's a good 20+ minute ride into town, but there is a Walmart, food lion, cvs, so if you need or forgot something you'll be able to get it. Overall a very fun week and our three year old is already asking when we can go back.
