If you can't find the dates you want, try our other two rentals in the same neighborhood! They are also adorable and close to the beaches (listings #3684592 and #3723457). They are new listings and are decorated in the same style as the bungalow!

Want to bring your baby? Not a problem! We've traveled with ours too and what a nightmare hauling all of that STUFF! We have a pack and play, high chair, toys, etc. Please be aware that the stairs are not baby-friendly and it's very important to know this before arrival (although we've never had any complaints or issues, I just like to be very clear about it).
Kitchen is fully stocked with every kitchen utensil a chef could want, including both a french press and a regular coffee maker, toaster, microwave, blender, pots for cooking lobster, cocktail bar area, crockpot, etc. If you are curious about something specific, just ask! Home has been thoughtfully furnished with a warm, stylish mix of antiques and more contemporary furniture. The artwork has been thoughtfully placed and the house is stocked with fresh, new bed linens and towels. Please let us know if you are curious about any particular details of the house.
Hi! My name is Maggie and welcome to the little red bungalow! I'm in my late 30s and my family comes many, many generations from Maine on both sides - my mom from a long line of dairy farmers and my father from generations of sea captains and fishermen. He was the first generation NOT born on Cranberry Island. Instead, he was born in the bustling village of Southwest Harbor on Mount Desert Island. I myself am a builder and designer and the little red bungalow is my version of heaven.
Maggie Birlem purchased this bungalow in 2004
Why this property? Well, have you ever just walked through a door and thought, can there be a more perfect house than this? I've designed and built many welcoming spaces but this one is my favorite and I will own it for the rest of my life! I LOVE sharing this home with travelers and nothing makes me happier than reading the guest book after you leave! As many guests have commented, it truly is a 'slice of heaven' and while I'm sure I'm biased, the reviews are not! Please come visit!
There is a lot that made me fall in love with this house. From walking up the stone walkway out front through the amazing landscaping, to stepping up on the fir wood of the front porch and swinging on the porch swing that my dad made me, to launching myself into the hammock in the front yard, I don't even have to step through the front door to feel like I'm home. I no longer live there but I could never sell this little oasis. Portland is an amazing town to visit and this house is a perfect spot to just setting in to and relax - whether you're looking for some downtime away from your own home or if you're here for a wedding or looking a place to vacation or just want a warm, welcoming, well-designed house to escape to for movie watching, cooking and resting - this is the spot! The clawfoot tub under the skylite helps too :)
For our third trip to South Portland (see our reviews from 2014 and 2015), our trip started off rocky (a big storm hit our area the day we were to leave!) but we were determined to pull off our vacation so we arrived a day late. When we texted Maggie to let her know we made it, she wrote "Welcome home"...and that is exactly how we felt!
The house will feel like home once you arrive. Maggie has thought of everything you would need- the kitchen is fully stocked. Bathrooms are supplied with towels and other incidentals. The front porch has a great swing and the backyard has a nice deck for meals or even a game of cards on the picnic table. Just pack your clothes and plan to take a quick trip to the food store, and you will be set for your stay!
As for food, in addition to our favorites (Willard Scoop, Scratch, Cookie Jar, Taco Trio, and Ottos), we tired a few new places. You must get a lobster roll from Bite Into Maine (Fort Williams lighthouse/park)- don't let the food truck fool you, it is amazing food! Terracotta was also great- very fresh food. We tried Dock's Seafood- good food and nice atmosphere. Being it was 4th of July week, a few places were closed so we ended up eating at our favorite places a few times- not complaining!
As for activities, hands down Willard Beach is the place the go. Clean and relaxed, with amazing views. Also there is a little playground just up the road from Scratch- a great place for little ones to burn off some energy. Fort Williams is a must see. We also ventured to Haven's Candies- you can go a candy tour and have the freshest taffy and chocolate. A shopping trip and lunch in Old Port is necessity. For little ones, try Tree House Toys and Little- great toys, books, clothing, etc. In the evening, we loved to go walking the streets by the bungalow- lots of folks walking, running, and children playing. It is a safe and very friendly neighborhood!
Our third time staying at Maggie's was a charm and is now our family's annual vacation. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did and don't forget to sign the little red book when you leave!
Maggie's beach cottage is stocked full of kitchen supplies, fresh bath towels, oversized beach towels and plenty of laundry detergent. It's well kept and clean. For a family of four, it was fantastic to have everything we needed at the cottage to make our stay comfortable. Maggie is great and accommodating! She let us bring our dog and he enjoyed his stay. You can walk to Scratch from here and the beach is just a bit farther but walkable as well.
We just got home from a wonderful week in Portland and this house was perfect for us! My husband and I (and our dog) just wanted a relaxing week and we got it. Our favorite part of the house was the front porch with the swing! Not only is the house very comfortable, but it is in a perfect location. We enjoyed walking to the beach and to Fort Williams park. My husband loves to fish and there were so many fishing holes less than 30 minutes away! The house is in a very convenient location to so many things. We loved our time there so much we just booked a week for next year!
We enjoyed our stay this May in Maggie's home. There's a lot of charm in this nice little bungalow and we felt at home relaxing by the fire or swinging on the hammock. There's plenty of natural light coming into the home and the kitchen was fully loaded, allowing us to cook a number of meals. It's located near a lot of nice restaurants in South Portland, and is only a few minutes away from Portland Head Light, so the location was perfect.
What a little gem! Maggie has done a terrific job decorating this adorable bungalow. We felt like we were at home from the minute we walked in. It was meticulously clean in every way. She even had the little things from wine glasses to nail polish remover to dog bowls and even dog toys. Our 3-legged pooch loved her trip with us. She didn't want to leave. We had a terrific vacation and definitely will return. What a perfect spot! Thanks for everything, Maggie. J &J from MA (and Lucy, too)
Although far too brief, my husband, mom and I had a wonderful stay at Maggie's gorgeous Portland bungalow retreat. The property looks like it is right out of a "Cottage Living" magazine, every corner of the home is a new adventure for the eyes! The fully equipped kitchen is wonderful and the fireplace (the center of the downstairs area) and living room is so warm and cozy that it is hard to want to leave the house. My favorite part of the rental was the antique soaking tub on the second floor which is centered under a skylight with a view of the stars!
In addition, it meant a lot to us that we could bring our small dog, who enjoyed snoozing in front of the fire and the pet bed which was so thoughtfully left for him. As for location, the cottage is very close to downtown, yet in a quiet neighborhood with plenty of restaurants and cafe's nearby. Our personal favorite was the C.I.A cafe where we enjoyed oversized cups of perfect coffee and the most delicious giant egg muffin breakfast sandwiches! Also a great spot for picking up unique pieces from local artists.
We loved our stay at the Little Red Bungalow and hope to be back soon!
Portland, ME is the perfect destination for an all-around Maine vacation! Just a couple of short, walkable miles into downtown, the house is situated within walking distance of a number of beaches and within a very short drive of some of the larger beaches in southern Maine. Portland won foodiest city last year by Bon Appetit so there is no shortage of amazing restaurants and cafes to enjoy. You can sail, deep sea fish or just take a leisurely ferry ride on the mail boats out of the Old Port. Local attractions include some of Maine's best beaches, amusement parks, outlet shopping in Freeport (including LL Bean) and lots of museums and sightseeing in Portland.
There are many local public golf courses in the area that are beautiful and affordable. Also, take some time to visit the most photographed lighthouse in Maine, which is just one walkable mile from the house. There are too many local ice cream shops, bakeries, breweries, coffee shops, cafe's and wine bars to mention!
There are also quite a few different ski/ snowboard mountains within an easy drive of Portland, as well as numerous groomed cross-country ski areas as well. You can venture out for the day and drive up to Boothbay to see the amazing botanical gardens and walk through the quaint village, or even up to Camden to visit the Farnsworth Museum, which features Andrew Wyeth's original works.
I have quite a few possible day trips and itineraries in a binder at the house. Of course there's also lots of information on the best places to get lobster - don't worry!
