This enchanting Shawangunk Mountain house -- a ''home sweet home'' -- sits on a forested mountain top in the cliff-side bohemian community of Cragsmoor, NY. and a half mile walk to Sams Point Preserve, entrance to the south end of the Gunks.
Losee Cottage is a newly renovated two-story stone-and-cedar-shingle house. The 2300-square-foot home boasts 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths (one on each floor). The four bedrooms sleep 8: 1 queen master bedroom; 1 full bedroom; 2 twin bedrooms (2 twin beds per room). Wraparound windows bring the outside inside with a generous deck, 900 square foot living/dining room (extendable dining table seats up to 10 and includes 10 straightback chairs),with both radiant floor and baseboard heat, a glassed-in summer porch with dining table for 10 (not heated though guests are free to use the woodstove if they want) and front porch sitting area.
The galley kitchen is well-equipped and has an ample prep area. A gas grill and a charcoal grill are provided for cooking en plein air. With the large outdoor deck and summer dining porch, the house is a great place to entertain outside in warm weather. In the colder months, enjoy cooking and chatting while standing on a warm, radiant heated floor or entertain family in friends in the main dining/living room.
The house is a complete retreat for a romantic week of vacation and relaxation or get-togethers for friends and family. It's a 2-hour drive from New York City, 45 minutes from New Paltz, 50 minutes from West Point.
The Middletown, NY, train station (for NJ Transit) is 40 minutes away; scheduled bus service in Ellenville is 15 minutes away by taxi.
The house is just minutes from great hiking and the best hang-gliding on the east coast. Just a bit further are amazing rock-climbing, mountain-lake swimming, farmer's markets, summer theater, music festivals and golf.
We regret that the house is not equipped for wheelchair accessibility.
We spent all our childhood summers in Cragsmoor and have fond memories of exploring the woods, climbing trees, finding red newts, and swimming in mountain water holes along the trails in the mountains. We also remember great, foggy, fall days when we’d play games, read and eat our mother’s fresh baked muffins with tea – or scare ourselves by watching Dark Shadows when our parents were out. As adults we enjoy cooking, entertaining and gardening in Cragsmoor and my sister was married in the Stone Church. Now her young daughter and friends are busy exploring the mountains.
Meg Browne purchased this house in 1999
Losee Cottage has always had a special attachment to us not only because our family has been vacationing on this lovely spot since the 1860's but because of the beautiful surroundings and the activities the great outdoors offers.
Losee cottage (pronounced Low -see with emphasis on low) was originally a kitchen attached to the house where our great grandparents and their 8 children summered. When the children grew up, 'Losee Cottage' was put on American Chestnut logs (still visible in the basement but not in the forest) and dragged down the field by horses (circa 1890-1900). It became our great uncle's home. He sold it during WWII and subsequent owners enlarged it.
We repurchased the house in 1999 and have restored and modernized it. We do not live in the house. We spend our free time in the “Stone House” which is next door to Losee Cottage.
We hope that if you do choose Losee Cottage as a vacation spot, that you will enjoy it and the surroundings as much as we have.
Less than a mile's walk to Sam's Point Preserve.
We are a group of quilters who have been renting the Losee Lane Cottage 2-3 times a year since 2012. The house is equipped with everything we need and provides us with plenty of room for sewing machines, plus all the things that go along with our craft. The windows provide, not only great natural light, but great nature as well. This trip, we were fortunate to visit with Meg, the owner, and her Cousin. We have already booked our next retreat.
We had a wonderful stay, This is located in a perfect spot close to wallkill farm and just outside of Sam Point. The house is very spacious, we had 2 family's stay together and there was plenty of room. When we visit again we will be sure to see if this property is available.
Our family vacation was very enjoyable. The house had plenty of space for all in our family and the price was reasonable. The description and pictures of the cottage were accurate. The cottage was located far enough from the city so that you would not believe you were in New York! The view was calm and peaceful. The trees were lovely and plentiful. We all would recommend staying at this cottage so that others can enjoy a home away from home!!!
The place was great; the owner makes it even better; words hardly can describe : such a wonderful experience we enjoyed.
Everything we needed was there; what a great place and the owner; checked with us, for all the just in case , you need anything; I'm recommend ing anyone who likes the mountains and hiking, check this place out

The nearby villages of Pine Bush and Ellenville offer all the conveniences of dining, shopping, services, and arts & crafts. Shadowland Theatre is the foremost regional theater in the area. Honor’s Haven offers a gym, spa, pool and golf.
Sam's Point Nature Preserve, a half mile from the house, offers invigorating hikes and gorgeous views of Bear Mountain (60 miles away), the Hudson Valley, and the Catskill Mountains. The historic local Stone Church with its lovely views is the site of dozens of weddings and events year-around. The Cragsmoor Free Library contains Hudson River School paintings as well as paintings by more recent artists.
Other activities are within a 30 to 45 minute drive, including the traditional charm of Mohonk Mountain House and Resort, Minnewaska State Park, and New Paltz, NY, a lively town with diverse dining, shopping and rock climbing as well as the National Landmark: Historic Huguenot Street.
Other activities closer-by include hang gliding, horseback riding, and hiking as well as wine tours and occasional musical performances at the Stone Church.
Kid Friendly: Ambulating children have a great time on the property. Parents will need to consider 'child proofing' for very young children.

Fire is not permitted anywhere on the property except in the fireplace and wood stove. Charcoal and gas grill should remain on the porch and only charcoal should be used in the grill. This is a county rule reflecting forest fire risks. Each year we have a major wild fire somewhere on the ridge. In 2015, the fire was started by a man burning trash. In 2016, the frie was started by a cigarette. In both cases, the fire quickly spread over 2500 acres and came within 1 mile of the house. Half the town was evacuated. The cost to fight that fire was significant and included national guard and private helicopters to carry water from the reservoir to the fire. Some 40 fire companies were involved. Please don't start a fire anywhere except where designated and, if you must remove ashes, please place in special containers supplied by us (ash can next to fireplace)
