Lilac Cottage was built about 200 years ago as a quarryman's cottage. It retains its charm and many of its original features, whilst offering modern comforts.
The cottage is about a 7 minute walk from the town and seafront and is within a couple of minutes walk to The Townsend Nature Reserve and Downs which gives access to the coastal path.
It is in a quiet location within the old town, at the end of an unmade road. Parking is usually available outside the cottage.
It is our seaside home and furnished and equipped to a high standard. It is very child friendly with lots of toys, baby equipment and garden play shed.
The cottage has a cosy sitting room with wood burning fire, LCD TV, DVD and hi-fi. There is a large kitchen with dining table and additional LCD TV. Cupboards are well equipped, and there is a dishwasher, built-in oven and hob, large fridge freezer, microwave and washing machine.
Wi-Fi is available.
A garden room leads from the kitchen.
The modern bathroom is downstairs with bath (with an electric shower over), toilet and basin. A tall ladder radiator keeps the room warm whilst drying the towels.
The bedrooms are upstairs and there are 2 doubles with 4'6' beds, and a bunk bed room with full size single beds. All beds have protectors, pillows, quilts (winter and summer weights) and the doubles have bed throws. However, linen and towels are NOT provided and guests need to bring these items. It may be possible for us to arrange for local hire if this helps.
There is gas central heating throughout the property.
At the rear of the cottage is a safe walled garden with decking area and views over the town. There are 2 wooden garden tables with chairs and parasol, a charcoal BBQ and play shed.
The cottage is very baby and children friendly with lots of baby equipment and children's books and toys. There is also a travel cot, high chair, and baby sundries. The stairs have gates top and bottom. There is a 4 wheeler buggy.
Dogs are very welcome.
This is a non-smoking cottage.
We have excellent customer feedback, with many of our guests returning each year
Lilac Cottage is a great place to stay, and is especially ideal for families and guests wanting to bring their dog. The town and beach can be easily reached on foot, it being about a 7 minute walk. Nearer still, is a convenience store for most provisions. From the cottage door, a walk further up the hill brings you on to the footpaths across a nature reserve to the cliffs and Durlston lighthouse and castle.
My family have lived in Herefordshire for the past 24 years, after deciding to leave London behind! We live in a beautiful rural location and run another holiday cottage on site at home.
Mrs Jean Simmonds purchased this cottage in 2001
We holidayed at Lilac Cottage late in 2001. We had never visited the area before, but enjoyed our stay and found the cottage a delight, and somewhere we knew we would want to re visit. We discovered that the cottage was for sale during that holiday, so we made a very quick decision to buy it and try our hand at holiday letting!
We still return as often as we can, and the cottage and Swanage is as inviting now as it was when we first came!
A real home from home cottage. Not the average holiday home with just the bare essentials.
A great location, where you can leave the car parked up outside the cottage and walk to the town, beach and cliffs. Even though the cottage is in the old town, it is peaceful and quiet.
Whatever time of the year you visit, the cottage is a delight. Warm in the winter with proper gas-fired heating and wood burning fire, and a lovely garden to enjoy in the summer months.
Great for families with children of whatever age. A safe garden and no traffic passing the door!
Dogs very welcome too!
We spent a brilliant week in this charming, beautifully maintained and well appointed cottage that we had first stayed in when our two children were very small 25 years ago. This time we were a party of six adults - the children have partners now - and there was plenty of room for us all. The cottage is everything a cottage should be, and even has a glimpse of the sea from the rear bedroom. There is a lovely leafy garden with bbq at the rear of the property perfect for al fresco dining or just enjoying the sunshine and Purbeck stone surroundings.
The cottage is located in a quiet area yet within an easy walk of the town and all its amenities, the seafront and cliff walks. Good restaurants are just a stroll away.
There is so much to do in this beautiful area: we enjoyed kayaking, rock climbing, bird watching, fossil hunting, steam trains, local history and a jazz festival... but didn't have time to do everything so a return visit to the cottage is eagerly anticipated.
We have no hesitation in recommending Lilac Cottage and the Purbeck area for a great holiday.
Warm, Friendly and Homely. Instantly felt at home. The cottage has every facility from children's toys, TV, bowls for the dog and of course comfortable furnishings and beds. Ideal for walks to the beach - shopping centre - Nature reserve, and the downs. The air is clean and gives you a feel good factor. The cottage is TRULY a home from home
A most delightful cottage situated in a quiet part of town (which was in fact helped by the road being non-surfaced). The facilities were ideal for myself, my wife, young daughter and a family friend. The sitting room was comfortable, with a homely atmosphere. The kitchen was equipped to a high standard, with small touches like the option of watching TV in there as well. The bedrooms were delightfully appointed and most importantly the sleep aspect was awesome! Likewise the garden area was peaceful and provided a good "chill zone". All in all the perfect base for our journeys around Dorset!
The cottage was homely, clean and well equipped, even for the dogs! The lane it is in was a bit dodgy for the car but there is alternative parking in a road around the back with a short path for access. There are lovely walks just up the hill, it is in easy walking distance to Swanage town center and the beach; with a short drive to local attractions. The owner made it easy to stay there, with good communication and a very personal approach. We had a lovely time there and would recommend it to others.
Lilac Cottage is a charming and very well equipped cottage located up a steep lane, but only a 10 minute walk from the centre of Swanage, and a few minutes walk from the beautiful downs. The owner was kind enough to let us bring our 4 dogs (by prior agreement), and they, and we had a wonderful week. Lilac Cottage was very comfortable indeed, and we felt it was a shame that our daughter (aged 15) was far too old to enjoy all the dolls, teddies, and toys in the cottage for visitors to play with! Very well equipped indeed for anyone staying with small children.
Dorset was very pro-dog in comparison to other seaside places we have visited so we were never stuck for places to take them.
We would definitely rent Lilac Cottage again but maybe when our grandson is older and we would be a bigger party as it was a bit wasted on the three of us, loads of room each! Plenty of room for 5 adults and a baby and a few dogs.....
We were 3 adults and 2 dogs down from the Midlands for 3 nights. The road leading up to the cottage is a gravel track but its only about 30 mtrs and passable with care (we found it easier to reverse up). The cottage is situated on a slope with the town and lovely beach below and the excellent dog walks on the downs above, both are well worth the effort though!. Lilac cottage itself is really lovely, very well appointed and comfortable...a delight to come back to at the end of a days exploring. There is a well stocked mini market within a couple of minutes walk which is just across the road from the pub!. We can also recommend the chinese takeaway which is even closer.
To sum up, the cottage is faultless, Swanage is lovely and the surrounding countryside is straight out of Enid Blytons' Famous Five books. Next time we will stay longer
Swanage lies between Weymouth and Bourmouth on the Ise of Purbeck. It is a Victorian town which has an award-winning beach and restored pier. The coastline is varied and beautiful with many interesting towns and villages close by.
The town hosts various festivals throughout the year.
It is a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and England's first World Heritage Site because of it's outstanding geology.
National Trust areas include Brownsea Island and Corfe Castle as well as the wonderful 5 mile stretch of sand at Studland Bay.
In addition to the sea, beaches and cliff paths, there are plenty of tourist attractions within the vicinity to interest all members of the family.
