What makes this villa unique

We purchased the villa because it was well built and withstood the destruction of a very wet season many years ago, when several surrounding villas suffered extensive damage. It is one of the few charming old villas remaining as many large modern and sterile buildings with little or no garden have sprung up around the Monte .The views from the terrace - of the castillo at night - and the charm of a lush garden and its flowers and the birds whose songs greet you in the morning was what sold us .

Wonderful 2 week getaway May 2008

  • 5 of 5

Returned for a two week Spring getaway in Villa Maeve. Had brilliant weather (thank you for the heavenly arrangements Olga, much appreciated!)

Cathy, from the new agency, was charming and full of good advice and suggestions for visits.

The unique villa with its great setting was a delight to return to: just as it was the previous September.

We enjoyed the pool, it was warm enough to swim in every day, the heating takes the edge off the slight coolness of the spring weather.

The garden and flowers were lovely.. and I managed to get some painting done, having plenty of days to chill in the villa between property hunting, visits down the coast, going to the Alhambra ... again! .. and and a wonderful time exploring the spectacular Alpujarras mountain range and villages.

The villa is excellent value for the location and facilities provided. We would liked to have stayed for a month!

Lovley Outside - Tired and Dated Inside

  • 3 of 5

- It is difficult to say anything positive about our stay. However, I can say that the gardens, and the views from the terraces are magnificent: all the way down the coast beyond Salobreña and Motril & to the snow-capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada. There’s the problem; this house is totally unsuitable for a cold winter holiday.

- We chose this Villa because it advertised a heated pool. Just before our stay we received an email asking us if we wanted the pool heating. It would cost us €30 to heat it up, saying yes we then didn’t consider the exorbitant cost to keep it warm, so early in our stay we asked for it to be turned off.

- Neither was it clear, that the cost of electricity would be extra. As the house is quite cold, with single glazed widows, ill-fitting doors & no internal insulation such as curtains to cover doors or to close off corridors, we realised that our budget would be stretched to keep ourselves warm using the solid state & blown-air heaters available. We opted to sit around the superb log fire instead.

- There are 4 bedrooms & we chose to use a double & a twin at the front of the house. The best room had a large double at the back of the house & the agent had expected us to use that one but, there was no quilt for that one & she, the agent, still seemed surprised that we hadn’t chosen to use it. This week was very cold & no one could have slept there without a quilt. The other beds were comfortable & warm, even through the rooms were not.

- The electricity system seems to need some modernisation. Many of the sockets would not take our UK/EU adapters, nor would the one in my bedroom take the EU extension cable that we had brought along to charge phones with. It had first to be plugged into an older, narrower extension – something we are taught not to do at home. The water boiler, which seemed fairly new & was efficient, was even plugged in to an extension socket. Lighting throughout the house was hit & miss – some worked, some didn’t.

- The floor & surfaces were very clean, as was the fridge & anything we needed to use in the kitchen. However, the pictures, wall hangings & ornaments (& statuary) were aged & dusty. Parts of the house had a feel of someone having just popped out to let us use their home.

- Perhaps at a different time of year, when more time is spent on the terrace & eating outside, much of what we found to be inadequate could be overlooked, but it is not somewhere I would ever stay in again.

Owner's Response: In answer to the points in this scathing and unfair review I would like to state the following: Like most villas on the Monte - we do charge for electricity during the winter season because at that time the heating of our homes and pools can be quite high . In exchange we give our guests very reduced prices and state clearly in our correspondence that electricity will be charged to them at cost, according to a meter reading and taken from their security deposit These guests paid a total of 550 Euros for a one week holiday for 4 adults .Their holiday price came to roughly 19 euros per person per night - (a price that is no longer available, even in most Youth Hostels) - for a cosy, fully furnished four bedroom villa, with all the amenities, a private pool, a lovely large garden and breathtaking views . At this price it is assumed that our guests will happily pay for the warmth and comfort of the many heating solutions we offer, to make their stay more comfortable. Our villa is equipped with 2 Econo heating wall units in each room , at least one air blowing electric heater per room, a heater/air conditioning unit in every room and a lovely fireplace with a blower system that disburses the heat in the living area. It is a shame that these guests refused to use these items and others - such as the economical wall heaters and the pool heater, to make their stay more enjoyable - in an effort to economize further on their already economically priced holiday - The lack of a quilt on one of the beds is very strange as we have 4 eiderdown duvets and four non - feather quilts for guests who are allergic to feathers. The ornaments, wall hangings and statues that they found “aged and dusty” are antiques that we collected in our travels and which our past guests have always found to be beautiful . We no longer provide adaptors as we we have guests from a large variety of countries, and also when we used to provide them, they were often damaged or went missing . Today, travelers come with their own adaptors, or ask if we could provide them , in which case we do. Last but not least, the lighting throughout the house was all working fine when last checked , so if there were any lights that did not work , they may have used the wrong switch , or they could have asked our wonderful manager to come and replace the bulb . All things considered, I feel that this very negative review is not only hurtful but is unfair and unjustified.

Lovely villa

  • 4 of 5

Lovely pool and villa up a hill out of the nearest town, nice views.

Everything you need, although it is 2km down to the main road and a car is necessary. Quiet in the evening, suited to families. Overall a lovely holiday. Stayed July 2017

Classic Spanish villa, had everything we needed, pool, beautiful view of Salobrena and the castle.

Overall to a good standard, some interesting pieces in the rooms originating from Burma. Some pictures painted by the owner were excellent. The new air conditioning was a bonus.

Wonderful holiday at the gorgeous Villa Maeve!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I had a wonderful time at Villa Maeve. On our arrival the lovely Donna welcomed us and showed us the ropes, and we were able to get straight into relaxing with a lovely bottle of wine and nibbles left by Olga!

The villa itself is spacious and stunning with it's beautiful collection of worldly paraphernalia and the pool and garden area is perfect for lounging. We spent most of our week at Villa Maeve lounging around the heated pool (we were there in April) and having barbecues whilst looking at the stunning view of the sea. The villa is quite high up in the Urbanisation area and the walk back from the beach was a bit of a trek but we had a wonderful taxi man called Antonio who took us in and out of Salobrena whenever we wanted, he was great!

Villa Maeve is a wonderful place for a relaxing and visually beautiful holiday, I recommend it 100% and thanks again to Donna and Olga!

Villa Maeve’s situation on the Monte Los Almendros offers not only magnificent views of the many beautiful villas and the surrounding sights but is also privileged to be close to many of Spain’s most picturesque, charming and historical tourist destinations. The ancient city of Granada with its magnificent Alhambra Palace is less than an hour away on an excellent highway . The quaint villages of the Alpujarra, where one can still see original crafts of the area being created, are a mere 40 minutes drive For the golf enthusiast, Los Moriscos Golf Club is just five minutes by car. The Sierra Nevada ski resort 'Sol y Nieve', Spain's highest and most famous ski resort, is 90 minutes by car.. ...and gives residents the rare possibility of enjoying a morning of skiing…. and an afternoon of lounging beside the pool, overlooking the Mediterranean. Outside of the ski season, the Sierra Nevada is ideal for picnics and hiking
