Overview

About the property

3 bedrooms. 1 en-suite shower,family bathroom,sep WC. Sleeps 6/8

Our detached villa is approached through double gates in an old stone wall, once inside there is ample parking. The same wall is to the rear & high hedges are to each side ensuring privacy. There is a small park and tennis court behind the house. The villa is re-furbished with a new kitchen complete with all appliances, d/washer, fridge/freezer, microwave etc. There is an open breakfast bar with stools to the lounge which has 2 double sofa beds, flat screen TV with English & French free channels plus extra channels through Orange TV. A VCR, DVD, CD/radio with iPod connection, a selection of video tapes,CDs & DVDs, books & board games. The double bedroom with separate access has an en-suite shower/WC, there is also 1 king bedded room & 1 bunk bed room. All have wardrobes & bedding. The family bathroom has bath with shower over, towels & hairdryer, washing machine in bathroom as the French way, sep WC. There is a large table under the shady veranda for outdoor dining, gas BBQ, part covered deck area. The large 10x5 metre pool (June-September) has a sun terrace with loungers. The large garden has room for a game of boules etc. We now have Orange wifi internet access.

The excellent 'Cafe du Port' on the banks of the canal is run by an English couple that have lived in Paraza for many years serving local food prepared expertly by the chef who has many years of experience from around the world. They serve excellent local wine, very cheap if you order the carafe, and it is an excellent spot for lunch in the summer sitting outside watching the boats sail by. In high season they are open for lunch and dinner but you would need to check for times & booking is advisable.

From this year the beautiful Chateau du Paraza is open for wine tasting and also tours of the chateau.

There is also an excellent new shop selling all essentials with tables outside for a drink and snack or an ice cream, they also cook chickens on a rotisserie at weekends. Fresh bread & croissants delivered every day and excellent selection of patisseries too.

We have the excellent 'Melo Velos' bike hire company owned by Vince & Sandra in the village with every sort of bike you could wish for, road, mountain and even electric to hire by the day or week with some wonderful quiet routes for you to try.

The neighbouring village of Roubia has 2 restaurants, one in the centre of the village with a wonderful terrace where you can eat with the swallows swooping around, a separate lower level has a bar complete with flat screen TV.

The second is just over the bridge and has tables overlooking the canal and indoor dining for out of season, this is also a small supermarket and serves takeaway pizza's too.

The village of Ventenac on the other side of Paraza also has two restaurants and a chateau with a wine cave for tasting and a small museum with the history of the wine production.

There are many local daily markets close by, a complete list is at the villa.

About Janice Sach

We are a retired couple from Essex who love our house and hope you will too.

Janice Sach purchased this villa in 2002

Why Janice Sach chose Paraza

We had been looking for some time for a house in this part of France as we have always loved it here. Although a short walk from the canal and restaurant and shop the house is very quiet and private.

What makes this villa unique

We love being so close to the Canal du Midi so we can cycle or walk along its banks. The hills just to the North are wonderful to visit too as are the many local markets.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Anyway, thanks for all the guiding and letting us enjoy this beautiful house.

As usual we had a great time at this house. It has everything you need and a lovely big pool. Handy wee shop for bread every morning and for bits and pieces you might need. Wine tasting just 100 yards from your door .

If you are looking a quiet peaceful holiday just to recharge your batteries this is the place for you.

Thanks again Janice and Peter for lending us your house

Great property with lots of space in a lovely area

  • 5 of 5

It's not easy finding a holiday house that suits 3 generations but this was great for us. The house is well equipped, including toys, bikes, beach and pool equipment, Great and has loads of space - inside and out. We made good use of the pool and very welcome, shaded deck area which also has a large table with bench seats where we enjoyed eating. The separate bedroom with ensuite bathroom enabled grandparents to 'escape' and have some privacy.

The village is VERY quiet but charming. It has a good shop and we enjoyed some very pleasant strolls round - the local wine is very worth sampling too! There is a small, pleasant park area at the rear of the property with a children's play area, tennis court, etc which was great when our daughter needed some energy burning off on quiet days at home.

The area is beautiful with many interesting places to visit. We particularly enjoyed Fontfroide Abbey and Minerve and trips to the coast for some lovely beaches (and seafood). A car is necessary to get around.

Jan is very helpful and responded very promptly to all queries and provided us with lots of information and tips.

lovely property in a lovely location

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely property in a nice quiet village on the banks of canal du midi. The house is nice and clean and has everything you need and more. There is a handy small shop on the banks of the canal ,great for bread in the morning and you can order a pizza if you want, there is also a pizza van on tues nights and a snack van on thurs night [great if you don't want to cook but also don't want to get dressed up for a restaurant]. The restaurants in the villages on both sides of paraza are very nice[don't know about one in the village as we went one tues night and it wasn't open]

Plenty to do in this area and plenty to see but as it was sooooo hot when we were there we didn't do a lot as it was hard to drag yourself away from the fantastic pool, don't know what we would have done without it .If you have children there is a lovely big secure garden .

We don't usually go to the same place twice but hope to go back again for the third time

Nice and very plaisant stay.

  • 4 of 5

Property was very clean and well equiped for our stay. Nice and quite little village, good conditions for a perfect resting time. Good service for the pool maintenance and nice attention from the caretaker Johanna. We discovered the nice "canal du midi" and a lot of fine restaurants with very attractive tarifs. We recommend the villa for your next holidays.

Paraza is a small village on the UNESCO protected Canal du Midi in SW France. It is just 45 minutes from Carcassonne & Bezier airport, and one hour from Perpignan,Montpellier & Toulouse. The nearest international airport is Barcelona two hours south. The area is famous for its historic chateaus and Cathar castles, the most famous being the walled city of Carcassonne which is an absolute must-see. There are many fine, sandy beaches close by, Narbonne-Plage & Gruissan being the closest at 30 minutes. To the north you will find the Orb valley where you can swim or go on fully organised canoe trips, not to be missed! The village itself has a restaurant, right on the banks of the canal, small shop that has all essentials with daily bread as well as a small cafe area for a beer glass of wine & snack. There is a tennis court & play area with boules. Several days a week vendors call in the square next to the shop selling fish, fruit and vegetables. There are many daily markets in the neighbouring villages, a full list at the villa. The city of Narbonne with its cathedral has plenty of shops, hypermarket & food hall as well as cinema, theatre and excellent swimming pool with slides etc.

Other Activities: Boat hire on Canal du Midi, cycling with hire in the village, golf at Carcassonne and horse riding in Lezignan.
