Great property for a break with friends

  • 4 of 5

We were a group of 8 adults and 4 children and had a great time here.

The rooms were ideal for the group, with plenty of space for us all to either be together or apart depending on how we felt.

Rooms are well appointed for a holiday home, with added bonus of pool towels as well as bathroom towels.

There are plenty of bathrooms for a large group and we never had a problem with the availability of hot water by making sure we staggered showers. The only issue was that we couldn't get any hot water up to the top bathroom, but we just used the wet room instead.

We made full use of the pizza oven on three ocassions - make sure to check out the back of the visitor book for the map to get more wood or ask Paul where to go - he's very helpful and just at the end of the phone.

Don't worry about reviews about vehicle size for the track - we had a variety including a VW Tiguan which had no problems. The first trip up is a bit daunting, particularly when you turn off the tarmaced road, but more because you don't know what's coming than it being very difficult. Take the corners with a bit of oomph and you'll be fine. From the second trip you'll be driving up like a local and seeing how much you can bring your time down by!

The pool is a great asset to the property, but we weren't able to make as much use of it as we would have liked due to the clouds of biting insects, including mosquitoes that were everywhere down by it. Every one of us got bitten, including the children, which was the one thing that put a downside on the property. Make sure you stock up on repellent for yourselves and candles if you're planning on trying to eat outside. Nothing the property owner can do about this, just be aware. We had to eat inside a couple of times as it was just too bitey and itchy outside!

The kitchen is a little on the small side for the size of the property, but we managed by keeping all bar the chefs out of it! Larger drinking glasses for soft drinks would have been nice, but generally the kitchen is well stocked with a very good size fridge, a useful dishwasher and some fantastic large pans for group cooking.

The only thing that was a negative about the property was the smell that came off the septic tank which was unpleasant if the wind was blowing towards the outside dining area.

Overall, a good week's holiday with friends in a great property.

Lovely villa in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying in this villa. Paul was very friendly and helpful. The drive up wasn't as bad as previous reviews had made out. It was all part of the adventure. The views were amazing and the villa was very well equipped. The mosquitos were a bit of a problem, especially round the pool and we all got splinters from the decking. We'd recommend emptying the hot tub in the summer to remove standing water and cut down the hedges surrounding the pool. But overall we had a great stay and would stay there again.

Perfect location to relax and visit the tuscan landscapes

  • 4 of 5

We absolutely enjoyed our two weeks in this beautiful house. The rooms are very nice and clean. The view from the rooms and also the terraces and the pool is amazing! The pizza oven is definitely a highlight!

The pool is clean and was big enough for us (7 adults). The only thing that would make it even nicer would be some nice pool furniture. Some of them are very old and don't look very nice.

The house is perfectly located to start trips to the cities around. We went do Lucca, Marina di Massa, Forte dei Marmi, Pisa and Montecarlo. I can also recommend Hesperidarium - il giardino degli agrumi which is located in Pescia. You can see there special types of lemons and oranges in an amazing garden and buy some of the best Limoncello I ever tasted.

The only "negative" point is the way up to the house. Paul welcomed us at the bottom of the hill on our arrival day and showed us how to drive it. To be honest I was shocked when I saw the way the first time. It is very steep and curvy, not every car will be able to climb that hill. When I arrived at the house I was sure I would not drive the way again. But I did and I really have to say that it gets better every time you drive it. You get used to it. I drove the way with my Mazda CX-5 SUV. Nevertheless, the road is difficult to drive and I would not drive it at night or when it's rainig. So if you also like to stay some days at the pool and you don't need to eat in a restaurant every day the way is ok.

A special thank to Paul. He was very friendly and helped us with every question or problem. He absolutely respected our privacy and did a great job!!

Beautiful views

  • 4 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay. We were able to take easy day trips to Viareggio, Florence, and Lucca interspersed with lazy pool and game days. The house itself was good for our extended family group of ten. The rooms are clean, comfortable and spread out for privacy. There are gorgeous views from every window and many great outdoor spaces too. We loved making coffee and sitting together around the table outside each morning enjoying the breeze and views. There are many comfortable seating spots outside for relaxing.

The only problem we had was the larger family had a small van (7 people with luggage) and it was entirely unsuitable for the very steep, very curvy road and it suffered damage despite careful driving. Even our Fiat 500L struggled. You'll want something small with a bit of power.

Paul was very helpful meeting us and getting us settled in.

Tuscan retreat.

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful rural home located on the edge of Pescia with a bar and restaurant at the bottom of the hill. Firstly the house is located at the top of a hill which requires a little care and attention when driving up.The house being located in such a scenic location with its traditional character and modern amenities is very pretty and its pictures do not do it justice. It had all we needed to enjoy a family holiday whilst travelling around the local area. The numerous rooms and bathrooms were clean and spotless and we had all we needed in terms of towels etc. Do stop for food and essentials before first driving up to the house as it will take a little less stress from having to do the journey for the grocery shopping. Otherwise we as a family would highly recommend it and have done so to other family members as a holiday destination.

La Fortezza is located in an ideal place in the hills above Pescia. It provides a tranquil scenic peaceful setting with an abundance of nature whilst still being only 5 minutes drive from the town. It is also within the 'golden triangle' of Lucca, Pisa and Florence - perfect for day trips. After a long day sight seeing there is nothing better than watching the sun set over the medieval hilltop villages with a glass of the local vino.
