Bright, cheerful, clean

  • 4 of 5

This was a very bright, cheerful, clean, comfortable cottage. For a studio, it was surprisingly spacious! It is tucked into the lush, green rainforest and was very private. There are lots of windows and the natural light pours in. We loved starting the day with a cup of coffee in the hot tub, and ending it with a soak under the stars.

Quaint, peaceful and exactly what we were searching for!

  • 5 of 5

This property was exactly as the pictures showed it in the listing. It was remote enough that we felt like we had our own slice of paradise, yet close enough to town that we had eminities if we needed them. BEST bed I have ever slept in, and the sounds of the forest truly lulled us to sleep. The hot tub was perfect for easing our muscles after a 12 mile hike to the lava flow in Kalapana. Brenda, the property owner, was available to answer all of our questions, and gave us some great tips for our stay. I would stay at this location again in a heartbeat!!! One word of caution... the first night we stayed, we went to it in the dark. A bit of a challenge to find it after dark, but after that we could find it very easily day or night.

Beautiful semi-private cottage close to Volcanoes National Park

  • 4 of 5

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here, and we would totally stay again! The bed was extremely comfortable, and the plentiful windows allowed a refreshing breeze into the cottage. The owner has definitely put in a lot of time in the garden here. It was like a small botanical garden! At night, the local frogs sang us to sleep (warning: they're pretty loud in the summer, but we still enjoyed them quite a bit!). The hot tub felt like heaven after a few days adventuring through Volcanoes National Park.

The cottage is located 7-8 minutes from Volcano Village (we highly recommend eating at Ohelo and Kilauea Lodge) and about 12 minutes from the National Park. You really can't beat the location. If you want to see active lava flow, you'll want to go to Kalapana, which is about 50 minutes away, and absolutely worth the drive!!

There were a couple of surprises on our trip. First off, you can't drink the water because they use a rainwater collection system. The water is usable for showering, washing, cleaning, etc., it's just not safe to drink. The owner graciously leaves 2 bottles of water per guest per day, but you'll need more if you're running through the park. Thankfully, the owner gave us a heads up, so we were able to stop in Hilo to grab a few gallons of water along the way. There's also a small general/convenience store in Volcano Village (next to Ohelo) where you can get a few gallons of water if you don't get a chance to grab some in one of the more populated areas.

Secondly, the cottage isn't exactly private. No one can really see you up there, and the owner has done a great job blocking any line of sight visibility, but we could hear people talking and working below our room during the day, and we could hear the tv and the people inside the other house through the night. To be clear, three sides of the house are mostly private, but the fourth (back wall) faces the main property. The driveway, entrance, and hot tub are on the private side of the house.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay, and we would probably stay here again!

Fantastic Accommodation!

  • 5 of 5

Great accommodation and was much bigger than a studio. Although it is all in one room, it is huge! Really liked that it was super clean and VERY comfy bed. WE slept so well.

Enjoyed the location so much, was easy to go see the VNP at night and see the lava. Great kitchen as well. Would have loved to have stayed longer...

Tree House Feeling

  • 4 of 5

This studio is great. It felt like we were sleeping in a treehouse in the rain forest. We didn’t spend a ton of time in the room because we were exploring the island, but it was a great home base for sleeping and showering. The surrounding area is remote and very private. We slept every night with the windows wide open to hear the wildlife and encourage the breeze. It rained most of the time we were there which made it seem even more exotic. There was a space heater available which we used to dry out our boots after trekking to the lava entry point in the rain! We didn’t use the hot tub, but we took a peek, and it looked well cared for. The fresh flowers sprinkled throughout the room were a nice touch. There is no A/C but the plethora of windows, and the ceiling fans, kept it comfortable. The only negative to the room would be the shower. It’s a bit snug and dated. Replacing it with a glass sided shower would improve the space exponentially. A washer and dryer would be a great addition as well.

Quaint Rainforest Cottage

  • 4 of 5

Clean, roomy, Great bed!!! and well appointed with lots of fresh towels and kitchen items. The Wi-Fi worked great and the cottage had a nice TV with all channels we looked for. You are in a rain forest: short stretch of dirt road, very dark at night (can be hard to see road signs if you go out or come in after dark which may be difficult if your elderly or don't see well at night) Our GPS worked pretty well and we were able to navigate pretty easy. There is also lots of chirping (its pretty loud, we loved it and slept great). No bugs bothered us outside however at the time of year we came (early spring) but the unit is fully screened. We kept the windows open and enjoyed the fresh air and sounds of nature. Would stay here again.
