About Ashley Hildreth
Michael and Glynis live in Vancouver, BC Canada. We have travelled the world but settled on the undiscovered area of Tulum and have had property in Mexico for over 5 years. We found Casa Playa Maya through friends who live on the Bay. Bill, the previous owner had been here for 18 years and wanted to retire and travel. We made Bill's dream come true and he made our dream come true. We instantly fell in love with the property, it's impossible to not LOVE the bay's beauty, but it needed some TLC and a bit of a facelift. We have the vision and skills to do major upgrades such as painting everything, new hotel quality beds, linens, towels, kitchen items & appliances, blinds and more. We built a lovely warm fresh water pool with a shallow section for the little ones. We added a 2nd Casita building with a studio and a 1 bedroom suites. Beautifully landscaped the gardens with colourful Mexican flora and brand new paving stone path. We completely renovated existing bathrooms and added some Mexican style colour and art. We just want to share this amazing part of the world with those who love a peaceful, relaxing holiday on one of the world’s most beautiful places on earth.

Why Ashley Hildreth chose Tulum
Soliman Bay is the best kept secret on the Riviera Maya. The Casa Playa Maya property is situated in the central location on Soliman Bay with no rocks and only a soft, white sand beach. The beach is at your doorstep and largely undiscovered so it is never crowded. When you arrive, you will wonder how this beautiful bay and Casa Playa Maya remains so undiscovered. Soliman Bay is the hidden gem of Tulum. Just a few minutes north of Tulum center, it is exclusive and private. Entry to Soliman Bay is protected by our Security checkpoint staff. The bay is protected by the second largest coral reef in the world, we have the safest snorkelling, calm, warm water and abundant sea life.

Loved our stay!
Loved our stay! If you need to relax and want to be at a quiet location this is a great place. The property is well taken care of by Luis and his wife. The studio apartment was well equipped and very nice. You’re right on Soliman Bay and it is amazing! The second largest reef is right there. We were able to kayak right to it. The snorkeling was wonderful. I saw a turtle every day. Lots of beautiful fish. The house has kayaks and paddle boards you can use. The bay is pretty shallow but I wore a life jacket so I could just float freely without having to worry about standing up when I got tired. Amazing!!!
Tulum is about a 20 minute drive. Every where we ate was wonderful. The Mexican restaurant, Oscar & Lalo’s is right across the highway from the road to the house, it was one of the best meals we had. My favorite restaurant in Tulum, El Vegetariano was amazing.
Nothing negative about where we stayed, it was the best part of our trip.
The negative about our trip, I’ll share in hopes that I can help someone else be better prepared. I feel dumb but this was our first trip to Mexico and last minute so we didn’t do a lot of research. Our fault.
Renting a car, it’s very convenient but here’s a couple things to know. If you rent a car your personal car insurance won’t cover your car rental in Mexico. The least expensive “insurance “ was $25 dollars extra each day. Our rental online was listed as under $200. Once they added all the fees, insurance, gas refill, extra driver, taxes, etc. it was around $600 US dollars. And it was a crappy small Toyota. Hopefully you’ll have more time to research and find a better deal. 2nd, VERY IMPORTANT, on your way back to the airport there are police stops. If you get the luck of the draw, they’ll pull you over and tell you you were speeding. I truly don’t believe we were but we weren’t going to question them, they are very intimidating. They will ask for your drivers license and tell you that you can pick it up at the police station the next day knowing full well that you’re most likely on your way to the airport. They told us the ticket was around $3000 pesos which is around $175 US dollars. We only had $140 US. They said that would work, we paid them, left. What a scam/racket. Lesson learned.
Great place to stay
This was our second stay on this property and it was as great as our visit last year. Last year our family traveled with us and we stayed in the big house. It was perfect. This year just my partner and I went, stayed in a studio apartment that was fabulous. Annabelle and Luis and baby Hector, the caretakers, go beyond what they need to to make your stay the best it can be. No complaints on anything for two years in a row. Will definitely be back !! Very pleased with our unit
Our unit was clean and comfortable. It was steps to the beach where the snorkeling was great! We will be back again for sure!
You will be hard pressed to find a better location and better accommodations. The apartment has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Kitchen, AC, fans, wifi, king bed, patio, pool at your feet, and the gorgeous beach of Soliman Bay 50 meters away. The care takers live onsite and are wonderful people who will take care of all your needs, should you have any.
Soliman Bay is the most incredible bay you can imagine. White sand, palm trees and coconut trees, turquoise waters protected by a reef barrier, incredible snorkeling and diving sites to view corrals and exotic fish. The dream post card!
Soliman Bay is the most exquisite beach I've ever seen, and the water is crystal clear all the way out to the reef. We had an amazing time and only felt the need to leave Casa Playa Maya to eat. Soliman Bay is fairly remote...a 20 min cab ride to Tulum for dinner cost us $60 US round trip. Akumal is closer, but we had already spent 4 days in Half Moon Bay and wanted to check out Tulum. What a cool town! We didn't get a chance to really explore because our cab driver waited for us to eat - but I would definitely recommend setting aside an afternoon to explore Tulum.
There are 3 restaurants within walking distance of the casita - a high-end hotel, Jashita, where we ate breakfast a few mornings, Chamico's - a fish shack at the south end of the bay, and Oscar and Lalo's, which is a solid 20 min walk to the highway on a dirt road through the jungle with no street lights (it was an adventure after dark!). There is also a little convenience store - The Bob Store, next to the hotel. I would definitely recommend renting a car or requesting to have the fridge stocked in advance. There is a full kitchen in the unit and a grill outside.
We were basically stuck at Casa Playa Maya for 4 days...and it was the best vacation I have ever experienced! I tend to prefer a pool over a beach, but not Soliman Bay! The beach is pure white, soft sand and the water looks like an aquarium. We took the paddle board and kayaks out everyday, so my boyfriend and his 10-year son could snorkel all the way to the reef. It was incredible! The weather was spectacular, and there was no sea grass while we were there. Sea grass was a problem down the entire coast of Mexico during our trip, and it was a problem while we stayed in Akumal. Fortunately, the beach in front of Casa Playa Maya was pristine.
The unit itself is very modest, but it has everything you need. We only used the AC at night, as requested, leaving the blinds closed with the ceiling fans running kept the unit cool all day, surprisingly. Free Wifi is available and there's no need for a TV - we didn't even realize it was missing until our 3rd day. There was plenty of hot water in the shower too - I saw a review that said otherwise.
I highly recommend the casita. If we vacation in Riveria Maya next year, we will most certainly stay here again.
Couldn’t have been happier!!!
We spent the 1st week of June at Casa Play Maya and couldn’t have been happier. The caretaker stocked the fridge with everything we asked before our arrival. Our casita was clean and had everything we needed. The beach was gorgeous. Plenty of kayaks & paddle boards to explore the bay. This place has everything you could ask for and more. To top it off... we were lucky enough to experience a sea turtle laying her eggs right there on the beach! Truly a beautiful moment to experience and something we will never forget. We were very careful to keep our distance as to not disturb the turtle. It’s best to watch from a distance with the moonlight. We alerted the caretakers and the nest was marked by the next morning. If you are considering a trip to Soliman Bay, you will not be disappointed at Casa Playa Maya. We will definitely be back! -Kylene
