Kate Culligan and Josh Comfort have lived in Denver for over 30 years owning and managing rental properties as a side- line to their professional lives. They have a Brady Bunch of kids-with Josh’s four kids and Kate’s two. She is a former Marketing and Promotions executive with Clear Channel Radio and has recently started a consulting practice specializing in career development. Josh is an Architect with extensive historic renovation experience, and has been a prime mover in the revitalization of Lower Downtown Denver, which is now filled with lofts and restaurants, many designed by Josh. A short 4-1/2 hour drive away, Taos offered a dramatically contrasting experience – inner city life in a burgeoning metropolitan area versus an ambling pace in a culturally complex small town.
Their Taos adventure began six years ago during a weekend getaway taken to replenish themselves during a particularly challenging period of their lives. Little did they know that a Sunday stroll down Morada Lane would result in a signed contract to purchase their first “unloved” but charming historic property, Casa Manana. The property had been empty for over a year and lacked adequate plumbing and electrical. But Kate and Josh saw through the overgrown courtyard and fuchsia pink walls to see the great “bones” of the property. After an extensive year- long renovation, they were hooked! Five years later they discovered La Loma plaza with its beautiful location on a hill overlooking the town. The private chapel and charming 200- year old homes were enticing and Casa Loma Chica was born.
Kate Culligan & Josh Comfort purchased this house in 2004
We were visiting Taos for five years before we even discovered LaLoma Plaza. It is a hidden gem-one of the original neighborhoods, quiet and yet close it. The private chapel and beautiful casitas that surround the original plaza are magical.
The casita has a gated front and back courtyard perfect for outdoor dining.
Wonderful property- had practically everything we could have asked for: washer/dryer, hot tub, dining table to gather, full kitchen, and quiet front and back porches to soak up the sun!
Thank you Kate and Josh, for everything!
Great quiet small Casita for 2. Courtyard shared hot tub with neighbor. Cute Santa fe style inside and out. Comfortable bed nice courtyard. Enjoyed the stay with my boyfriend. Great ski weekend get away.
The Loma Chica casita was nice, and clean, but too small for my husband and I to want to stay there again. Positives were it was a real adobe structure, it was filled with folk art (almost too full in my opinion, to the point of being cluttered), it had Wi-Fi, a full size fridge, and a dishwasher, plus some type of cabel TV, and there was a nice place to sit in the back yard. The location was close to the main Plaza, definitely within walking distance if the weather was not too hot (as it was when we were there). There is a gas grill and a hot tub; we did not use either of them.
Negatives were no air conditioning, which of course would not be a problem most of the time in Taos, but we were there during an unusual hot spell. The front and back yards were full of tall weeds, which bothered my husband given his devotion to landscaping and gardening. The place was very small, and we felt cramped. There is no seperate bedroom, and only a queen size bed (it was a comfortable bed), with very small night stands on either side and a sort of flimsy metal headboard. The couch in the sitting area was very low to the floor and uncomfortable to sit on. The TV is the smallest flat screen television I have ever seen, but given how small the sitting area was, I was not too surprised. The top of one of the end tables was so uneven the liquid in a glass actually sloped! One of the chairs in the dining area was broken and a hazard to sit on.
If you like to be cozy, you will probably find this place to be quite nice for 2 people. Sorry I can't be more positive, but I am by nature an honest and direct person, and I would not stay here again because it is just too small for my taste.
We love staying in any of Kate and Josh's properties in La Loma Plaza. They are charming, comfortable and inviting. I can't sum it up any better than to say it feels like "home".
We stayed in Taos for three nights in April. Loma Chica was just perfect: cozy, quiet, private but within walking distance to the Plaza. If you are bringing a pet, the fenced courtyards are really convenient (and beautiful).
Many guests have enjoyed creating 'art' in the back courtyard. Wonderful space and great light!
