About the property

3 Bedroom and 2 Bathrooms with bonus kids loft; sleeps 5 to 7 guests

The Beachcomber II enjoys a great in-town location....steps to the beach, restaurants, entertainment, and shops. We are family and pet friendly with a fenced yard and a fun playground just through the gate in the backyard.

The Beachcomber II features hardwood floors and soft relaxing colors throughout. You will pass under the dogwood trees through the front door and enter into the sunroom, into a large livingroom with cable television, pick your bedroom and get ready for family meals in the eat-in kitchen. Your choice of bedrooms is a sunny twin room with built-in-bookcases, a master bedroom, with queen bed and private bath or a queen size bedroom across from the second bathroom with clawfoot tub/shower. A bonus kids loft is upstairs with two twin beds, and window seat; we recommend it for for kids.

While enjoying your stay with us, we have provided an outdoor dining space under the trees with a gas grill. WIFI is provided.

Beachcomber II is a charming cottage, great for families, couples or girl's getaway. We began welcoming guests to our first cottage, Beachcomber I on Hawthorn in 2011 and we so enjoyed giving guests a great place to relax and get-away. With the success of Beachcomber I, we bought this charming cottage in 2012. After a total renovation the Beachcomber II; a 3 bedroom, 2 bath vacation cottage with kid's sleeping loft is steps to the beach, shops and restaurants. Each year, we spend time in the off season to see what we need to replace or add. This year we upgraded one of the bathrooms and built a new shed for bikes and beach toys, added new Adirondack chairs under the front trees. Please come and enjoy!

The beauty of the Beachcomber is it is perfect for families and couples. The cottage features one floor living, unless you are a kid and want to escape to the kid's loft. We have a large fenced yard with a gate that opens to the town playground. We welcome well-behaved dogs; pet fee applies.

The enjoyment of the Beachcomber II isn't limited to the house. Along with the fenced yard; we feature a gas grill and outside dining under the trees, right outside the kitchen door. great for grilling out and crab picking! And just steps from the house are restaurants, shops, the beach, and fishing pier...be sure to get a soft serve ice cream at Nancy's, which you can see through the trees!

Colonial Beach, Virginia; 60 miles from DC,but a world away... Colonial Beach, Virginia...the Gateway to the Northern Neck of Virginia.... a beach front haven, less than 2 hours from DC, along the Potomac River. Many say, it is place that time has forgotten with it's slow pace, friendly people who wave as they drive past you on their golf carts, wide beaches where the Potomac River is 4 to 6 miles wide, within minutes to historical attractions; George Washington's Birthplace; the Lee Family Home, Stratford Plantation, explore Westmoreland State Park, and find Shark's teeth and more, great boating, fishing, crabbing, and discover the Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail, Westmoreland Berry Farm, several great waterfront restaurants, waterfront live bands on weekends during the summer, and great crabs.

Spring and early summer is a beautiful time at the Beach, to enjoy a much quieter waterfront and explore the region's history and wineries!

Thanks for looking and be prepared to fall in love with Colonial Beach and the Northern Neck!

About Cathy Bokman

My husband and I, who live and work in the DC area, fell in love with Colonial Beach on our first visit in 2005 and bought a weekend house shortly thereafter. Since graduating from George Mason University; I entered the hospitality business. Being a cottage owner is something I love. It enables me to improve and beautify properties and provide a nice place for people to enjoy their vacations.

Cathy Bokman purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Cathy Bokman chose Colonial Beach

In 2009 we bought our first vacation rental, Beachcomber I. That house was a partnership with my sister and my husband's brother; it was a total renovation. I found though that people really enjoyed themselves and discovering Colonial Beach and the area. A year later, a childhood friend that I grew up with in Wellesley, Massachusetts called when she found this listing on the internet. This house, which became Beachcomber II didn't need nearly the amount of work as our first project and had the same great location; steps from town and beach...so we jumped in and started the work....hope you enjoy!

What makes this cottage unique

Beachcomber II has a great location, or as guests tell me...it is a gem. I know they enjoy the location steps to town, beaches and a playground just through the back gate. Also it is mostly on one floor, except the kid's loft.

Started off bad & got worse...

  • 1 of 5

When we arrived after spending 8 hours in the car, we had still not received the door code. I called and texted, and received a text back that the owner was busy, and couldn’t talk at that time...while we sat there in the car. I sent a message thru homeaway, and a text stating that if we didn’t hear from the owner in the next 30 minutes that we would be making other arrangements. The owner called to give us the code which didn’t open the door, then she drove over to try another code which finally got us inside...and stated that her husband hadn’t changed the code as she’d asked him to. If you’re looking for a place to stay where you can prepare meals...this is not the place for you. The dishes and glassware were not clean, and the “non-stick” cookware was in unbelievably bad condition. Much of the non-stick surface on the pots had been almost entirely scraped off while the remainder flaked off into our food. When I pulled the sheets and pillow cases off the bed prior to our departure, I was nauseated by the sight of the pillows which were covered with yellow stains. The price must be based on a sleeping capacity of 7. For a couple, we just paid an excessive price for a bad experience.

Owner's Response: Beth, I am beyond sorry for your stay experience. True, when you called, I was on the other line and couldn't take your call right away and sent an automatic reply from my phone. I did follow-up shortly thereafter, called you and personally was there to let you in...yes their was confusion between myself and my husband on the code change. I apologized then, later and now. We take pride in the quality of our homes and paramount is the cleanliness. We have a great team of cleaners and this is the first we have ever heard a comment or complaint. I will check the cookware with my cleaners and remind them about the back-up supplies we stock so that the quality is good. Additionally, I will re-inforce the cleaning check-list with them. Beth, I had personally inspected the house one stay prior and found our cleaners doing a good job. I apologize that you did not feel the same. The house is priced for a family. In the summer season, we keep the pricing at a flat rate to accommodate families. In the fall, spring, and winter, we do special pricing for couples with lower pricing and additional person charges for additional guests. You did know the price and size prior to arrival, Our commitment is for a good stay and we enjoy serving repeat guests. We are beyond upset that you were unhappy. I will contact you outside of this forum in order to send you a discount for your inconvenience. Again, our apologies, and we will use your comments to make sure guests don't experience similar. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Great location right next to the beach, the children loved it.

  • 4 of 5

Plenty of room for all of us and fully equipped. Beds were very comfy and the whole cottage was clean with plenty of linen, towels etc. Everything worked well. Had the pleasure of meeting Cathy who was most charming and gave us great insight into living at Colonial Beach as we have been considering this area for retirement. Two small quibbles, no where to put things in the en suite bathroom, needs a shelf or unit and the garden furniture all needed cleaning. Overall a wonderful stay and would certainly stay at one of Cathy's Beachcomber Cottages again.

Nice Weekend Retreat

  • 4 of 5

The house was quiet and within walking distance to everything. A block or two from the beach. Cathy stopped by to introduce herself and was very hospitable. We rented a golf cart and zipped around the whole area. Everyone was very friendly. We would stay here again.

Great location, first visit to Colonial Beach, a little rain to deal with but still good.

  • 3 of 5

House was clean, well appointed, and convenient. We were on just a two night stay, so it had everything we needed. If we were staying for a week, it would be nice if there were a TV in the bedroom and an outdoor seating area raised off the ground. The rain preceding our visit and intermittent during our stay, rendered the yard unuseable. Minor inconvenience , just a suggestion for a future upgrade.

Owner's Response: Curt, Thanks for staying! We strive for 5 star ratings so I was disappointed and will reach out personally to understand your perspective and the three star rating. The large fenced yard is a great feature of the house, guests often comment to us how much they enjoy being able to relax under the trees. We have tried to get a permit for a deck, but due to the zoning regulations, it is not possible. I do understand that coming after an unusual rain event, that left 8 inches of rain and flooded much of the beach would cause the lawn to be unusable, sorry for the inconvenience. We will consider the addition of televisions to the bedrooms this season. Again, thanks for visiting and we hope to see you again! Thanks, Cathy Bokman

Convenient location and very comfortable!

We enjoyed our stay. Owner was responsive and we loved we could walk to restaurants. It was the winter, so we didn't go to the beach, but it was close.
