WHY A 'CLUB'?

Mainly because this area has so much to offer that we hope guests will want to visit more than once. But also because what we offer is much more than a conventional 'self catering' rental.

Our 'FULLY INCLUSIVE' weekly RATES cover: a generous WELCOME HAMPER of speciality foods & wines from top quality local suppliers(more than enough for the first weekend's catering needs), PLUS as much mFREE Montecchio HOUSE WINE as you wish, throughout your stay. Our FREE COCKTAIL BAR of branded spirits and local liqueurs such as Limoncello is also kept stocked throughout your stay.

Our CONCIERGE SERVICE is provided by local boutique hoteliers, who help with everything from booking the best restaurants, to fixing a cookery class or even a massage, onsite at Montecchio!

ALL ENERGY COSTS are included - very expensive in Italy! ; all linens & towels are included(inc pool) with cleaning and change of linens every 3-4 days, and at end of stay; we provide a continuous supply of Fragonard bathroom toiletries and daily consumables (everything from dishwasher tablets to Montecchio's own Olive Oil!).

Baby Cots/Cribs with linens, and High chairs are available free of charge, where required.

Indoor & Outdoor Games, as well as Pool Toys for the Large Pool (19m x 6m , shared, open 01/05-31/09); DVD, Video & CD libraries offering a wide choice; FREE WiFi in all houses.

The result, we think, is 2 Comfortable Vacation Villas, that really feel like 'Home From Home', from the moment that you walk through the front door. We hope that you will be tempted to come and judge for yourselves!

CLUB MONTECCHIO is located centrally in Tuscany, within easy reach of the main 'must see' destinations of Siena(20mins drive), Florence, San Gimignano, Arezzo, Cortona, Montepulciano and Montalcino(all around an hour). Further afield, but still easily accessed by autotstrada/highway are Pisa, Perugia, Orvieto, Bologna and even Rome.

What's more the Chianti Way(Chiantigiana) runs right past the Villa Arceno estate's front door, leading up into the Chianti, and all it's famous wineries(Felsina, San Felice, Brolio, Capannelle, Badia e Coltibuono, Castello di Ama etc), picturesque towns such as Gaiole, Radda, Panzano, Greve etc.

But there is no need to roam afar, as Montecchio is surrounded by many beautiful and historic hillside villages, all worth visiting, and usually with bars and good restaurants.

About James Benfield

Montecchio is home in Tuscany to James and Penny Benfield, where we spend half of the year, and which we enjoy sharing with guests.

We had the great good fortune to 'fall over' the best spot on the highest point of the beautiful Villa Arceno wine estate, when contemplating the right place for a vacation home. After 30 years of living in Central London, and spoilt by a jet set corporate lifestyle with lots of travel, we needed something exceptional, in a beautiful setting, away from the developed centres of tourism.

James Benfield purchased this villa in 1998

Why James Benfield chose Siena Area

Because it's a 'little piece of paradise' :

- off the tourist track,

- in a stunning location on a hilltop, with breathtaking 360 degree views of the Chianti hills,

- in the countryside, but surrounded by picturesque villages, and just 20 minutes from the Renaissance gem of Siena,

- close to major roads, giving fast and easy access to Florence, San Gimignano, Perugia, Orvieto, and many more 'must see' places,

- and most important for 'foodies', the area offers a wealth of good restaurants & quality wineries.

What makes this villa unique

HOME FROM HOME with 5 star standards of comfort and luxury.

Because we controlled the renovation of the large Tuscan farmhouse from the very beginning, we were able to develop the property with the emphasis on privacy. As a result, Montecchio is made up of PROPER HOUSES, and NOT APARTMENTS, as would be the norm in Italy. Each house has a separate outlook, private garden, and segregated parking pergola.

Both rental houses were designed and furnished in the same style as our own place, filled with pieces of art & furniture from our own collections, and the kitchens equipped to professional standards.

The result, we think, is two comfortable Vacation Villas, that feel like 'Home from Home', from the moment that you walk through the front door.

All this plus the owners' in-depth knowledge of the area, and it's amenities, with the 'inside track' on everything on which local retaurants are 'hot' currently, to where to park safely & legally in Florence|!

Absolutely Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently stayed at Club Montecchio, while traveling in Italy with another couple, their two young children, and nanny. We chose Club Montecchio based on the great reviews, and the benefit of two adjacent villas. Our stay exceed all expectations, and we are anxious to return.

My husband and I stayed in Il Prato, and our friends were in the adjacent villa, Oliveto. The accommodations and property are wonderful- high quality, clean, and peaceful- even better than described. The welcome basket came brimming with delicious local foods and wines, which we enjoyed throughout our stay. The villa kitchen is spacious and fully stocked with high end equipment and pantry supplies, providing an opportunity to cook wonderful meals. (The local grocery store in Castelnuovo Berardenga is conveniently located and well stocked.) There are a number of excellent restaurants nearby, several of which we were able to enjoy.

Club Montecchio is located in the hills of Tuscany, away from the hustle and bustle. Peaceful, and quiet. It is surrounded by beautiful country side and small hill towns that are fun to explore. Sienna is nearby and a must to visit. A car, a good map, and gps are highly recommended. The villas also have generous libraries which include maps and brochures about the area.

Our stay at Club Montecchio was perfect. We have no complaints, other than we wish we have stayed longer. James Benfield and his wife, very gracious hosts, have created a little slice of heaven in the hills of Tuscany. We highly recommend it, and are already planning a return visit!

Owner's Response: Susan and husband Jamie, and their friends rented our two villas, whic as she points out, are perfect for two families/groups in being situated adjacent to one another. The groups enjoyed moving freely between the villas, enjoying the large terraces and private gardens, which amply accommodated a large group. They clearly enjoyed the facilities we provide, which include Complimentary 5 star Concierge and free cocktail bar, in addition to the unlimited house wine and large Welcome Hamper that sustained them throughout their stay. Both groups promised to return, and we would love to have them back!

The absolute best in a vacation home.

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth visit to this property, and our third staying with a home owned by James and Penny Benfield. Everything was perfect. The property is immaculate, the Benfields are very attentive, but not intrusive. The natural setting is unusually beautiful, and Siena is just 20 minutes away by car. This is the ideal base for exploration of the Chianti area. We were here this time with two granddaughters and in our week managed to visit Monte San Savino, Sant Antimo, San Quirico d'Orcia, Pienza, Badia di Passignano, San Gimignano, and Siena itself on two separate days. We hope to return soon.

Owner's Response: It was a joy to welcome Bill and Sue back, for the fourth time(we are still flattered when guests choose to come back!); they are such experienced, and regular travellers, that we value their comments and opinions highly. They also vindicate our view that there is so much to see and enjoy in and around the Chianti, that Club Montecchio is worth coming back to on more than one occasion. Thank you Bill and Sue, for your generous review!

Wonderful stay...

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Il Prato...it's a beautiful property tucked away in a picture perfect landscape. There was a lovely basket of locally sourced food and wine when we arrived...which lasted us through our stay. James was incredibly warm, welcoming and his recommendations for restaurants and wineries were top notch. We couldn't have asked for anything more and hope to return in future.

Owner's Response: As ever, it is rewarding when guests notice the effort that we put into the details; the food in our huge Welcome Hamper is mostly from Antica Macelleria Falorni in Greve, the house wine from the famous winery Felsina in Castelnovo, and the quality shines through. We are fortunate to be surrounded by restaurants that would satisfy the most demanding foodies, and our central location in Tuscany makes it easy to reach so many must see places(Siena, Florence, Cortona and many more). As you enjoyed your time at Club Montecchio, Lauren, we really hope you will come back soon! James

Paradise in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

Finding the beauty of the landscapes in Tuscany and the charm of its villages was no surprise because of all we had read and heard from other travelers to the region, but the beauty and convenience of the Club Montecchio villa (Il Prato) was way beyond our expections. This is a charming structure, beautifully renovated and comfortable. The owners have thought of every possible detail of convenience. We were especially pleased with how well the kitchen was supplied as we enjoy cooking for ourselves. However, the availability of delectable cuisine sprinkled within easy driving of the Villa was delightful, including Michelin-star restaurants. Follow the suggestions provided in the written information in the Villa. If the owners, James and Penny Benfeld, are on site during your visit, you will be delighted at their friendliness and helpfulness in finding just the right places for you to visit. The property itself is extremely well maintained, the grounds as well as the house interior. We have no hesitation in recommending Club Montecchio for your stay in Tuscany, within easy driving of so many famous towns. We were travelling in mid-March when the weather was cool, so we can not speak to the comfort of the home during summer months. Unfortunately, we were there too early to use the lovely pool also available on the property. These are only incentives to return to Tuscany another time!

Owner's Response: Wow Barbara has written such a generous review - thank you Barbara! It is always rewarding when guests notice the effort and detail that go into our "Club" concept, where we try to offer much more than a standard rental home, such as the kitchen equipped to professional standards; the complimentary Concierge concept to offer pre-arranged Tuscan experiences; plus our huge Welcome Hamper, free bar and unlimited house wine. We love interacting with our guests, but can't be here full time. We are fortunate to have an outstanding house keeper, Cristina, who has been with us for 14 years, and a 5 star Concierge, Rita(top hotel experience), both of whom understand what we aim for, and do an amazing job, when we can't be here. The pool(unheated) opens mid May through September, and is special in both it's special location/views, and it's large size.we really hope Barbara and group do indeed return!

We loved our time here...wished for more!

  • 5 of 5

This was the most relaxing and enjoyable place we stayed on our first trip to Italy. Everything at Il Prato is top quality: beds, linen, kitchen furnishings and all the "advertised extras" (welcome basket, wine and self-serve bar). We appreciated the wine tasting tour and dinner reservations that Rita (the concierge) arranged for us, and Christina (the housekeeper) was efficient and very helpful. Adding notes I did not see in reviews before I booked: They have several guide books and tourist maps of most of the Tuscany attractions, as well as other Italy destinations. This is a two story apartment, both bedrooms and bathrooms are upstairs. If anyone has mobility issues, I would consult with the Benfield's for their recommendations about the units they rent. We were highly satisfied with every aspect of our experience!

Owner's Response: Joni has provided a generous and thoughtfully constructed review, which is greatly appreciated; speaking on behalf of two couples with 40 years experience of traveling, and renting together, she clearly knows what she is talking about! We set up our two vacation homes to be the sort of rental we want to stay in ourselves(but seldom find!), with the same top quality equipment and furnishings as in our own house at Montecchio(no cast offs!). It is hugely rewarding when the effort and attention has gone into the details(welcome hamper, information rack with local maps, guide books etc) is noticed. We are so fortunate to have amazing help from Cristina our housekeeper of 14 years, who keeps the houses spotless, and Rita, whose deep experience as a 5 star hotel Concierge, gives our guests a complimentary service that is rare in a vacation rental; thank you ladies! Joni's point regarding disability access in Il Prato, is well made; our other rental house, L'Oliveto, has ground floor bedrooms, and is highlighted in our listing as better suited for disability access. Please come again Joni & group, as you would be very welcome!

Beautiful, clean and loaded with amenities

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent five nights at Club Montecchio. The house is very well appointed with a fully stocked kitchen, comfortable beds and furniture and all the wine you can drink. I was pleasantly surprised to see that even the refrigerator and welcome basked was stocked with eggs, meats, cheese, pasta and more. We cooked for two days before even needing to go to the coop for only a few more items. That really exceeded our expectations! The house was immaculately clean (thank you Cristina) and Rita was very helpful in recommending and booking winery tastings and nearby dinner reservations. James' communication before, during and after our stay was excellent so we felt well taken care of. Attention to details makes all the difference! I would recommend marking a waypoint on your GPS after you arrive the first time to make it easier to find in the dark (it gets dark early in November). Great launching point to check out surrounding Tuscan towns.

Owner's Response: It is a joy to read such a positive review, as penny & I were at our home in the UK during this stay, but we need not have concerned ourselves, as Cristina(Housekeeper) and Rita(Concierge) did their usual outstanding job of looking after our guests - thank you ladies! Our complimentary housewine(yes, as much as you can drink), and huge welcome hamper also seem to have been appreciated. The GPS suggestion is a very good one, and we will make a point of adding the details to our welcome letter, which all guests receive.
