IBM retiree and semi-retired university professor born in San Juan, PR. Lived 12 years in the US, where we worked and attended graduate school.
Jorge and Maria Charneco purchased this house in 2003
The first time we came to Marchiquita beach area we fell in love with the spectacular 180 degrees ocean view and we decided immediately to buy the lot and build the beach house overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on a 50 ft cliff oceanfront with a 3-5 minute walk or 1 minute car ride to the public beach. There are other nice beaches in the vicinity too. We had visited other beach areas in the island but found them too crowded for us. This area was perfect to make our dream come true!
This is our family vacation home and even though we have our home in San Juan our children and grandchildren, who live in the USA, prefer to stay here in beach house because they love it!
The house is very homey! You will feel this is your 'Home Away from Home!'
Spectacular 180 degree views of the ocean. Walking distance (3-5 minute walk or 1 minute car ride) to public beach. House has a fenced yard, making it safe for children.
It is a 7-10 minutes away from town by car, where you find restaurants, fast food places, pharmacies, shopping and food stores. There is also a Casino in town, in case you are interested!
House has equipped stainless steel kitchen; amenities such as table games, etc. Plenty of sitting space in the indoor terrace and outside deck, suitable for relaxation, while enjoying the spectacular 180 degrees Atlantic Ocean view during daytime or moon and stars in the sky by night!
Play & Pack, stroller, car and booster seats for small children, as well as toys are available.
Jorge and Maria could not have been more gracious hosts. They met us at the San Juan Airport with car seats in tow for our daughters. We followed them to the house and were treated to an amazing view upon arrival.
The house truly has one of the best views ever of the Atlantic Ocean. Playa Mar Chiquita is a 30 second drive down the hill. This beach is perfect for little ones. It is protected from the Atlantic by a rock formation. We only had one day of intense waves, and it actually was quite enjoyable to sit on the beach and watch the waves crash over the rock formations. There is an amazing private beach (although rocky) a short walk the other way down the street.
San Juan is a 45 minute trip east. We took the ferry from Catano and it was a super easy trip $.50 each way. The western portion of the Island is only a couple hours away. We travelled there one day when it was raining in Manati.
Walmart is a 10 minute drive, but the Santa Teresa market is less than a mile away. We walked there each morning for fresh bread and the basic necessities. Everyone in the village was more than friendly and the stray dogs were merely harmless along the walk.
Despite the rain, everything was perfect with our vacation. The views are better than advertised. Jorge and Maria have a wonderful welcoming book with local highlights and places to eat. Although we only made it to two of the recommendations, each was awesome!
We had an amazing vacation in this beautiful beach house. The owners, Jorge and Maria are awesome! They are well organized and get back with you quickly. They even met us at the airport - at 1am - to make sure we made it to the house ok! When we arrived at the house, we found a lovely container of cookies and Puerto Rican wine from the owners! The home was immaculate and well-equipped. The photos of the patio and views do not do it justice. Mar Chiquita beach is breathtaking and so close. My husband and I brought our sons - aged 12 and 16. While there, we hiked The Window Cave, zip lined at Toro Verde and hiked the El Yunque National Rainforest. We enjoyed beach time at Mar Chiquita, Los Tubos and Vega Baja. We fell in love with the beauty of Puerto Rico and the culture! We have been using VRBO for 12 years and have rented a lot of homes - this was by far the best! Thank you for your incredible hospitality, Jorge and Maria! We hope to return!
We have had such a wonderful vacation in this lovely beach house! We are a family of 6 from Norway; 2 adults and 4 "young adults" age 13-21. We initially looked for a 3 bedroom house, but since we had fallen in love with the view from the photos, we decided on this house anyway because nothing else could compare location wise. We were so pleased with the decision! The view is just marvelous, better than on the photos, and the terrace serves like a huge outdoor living room. The bedrooms are large, so it can actually easily sleep four adults in the room with bunk/twin beds, but we decided anyway to make use of the sleeping sofa in the TV room. The kitchen is very well equipped, fridge/freezer, ice cube machine, smoothie machine, etc. There is a big bbq outside. The owners had (on our request, which was really kind) bought two hammocks, standing on legs, that could be moved around anywhere and a lot of time was spent sunbathing and relaxing outside. Mar Chiquita beach was a gem, but apart from some drinks and pastry being sold out of the trunk of a car, there is no kiosk there, so bring food and drinks if you want to spend the whole day - or run back up to the house which is only a 3 minutes walk away. We had rented a car, and our favorite beach turned out to be Vega Baja, which is only 10 minutes away by car. It is a beautiful beach, with palm trees to lie under if the sun gets too hot, and a kind of lagoon ideal for small children. Sometimes the waves come over the rocks that protect the lagoon and creates beautiful water walls. The water here is clear, warm and shallow, it is like a big swimming pool. There are kiosks, showers, beach volley ball etc. From the beach house, it took only 35 minutes to San Juan, if you avoid the rush hour. We also went to the rain forest El Yunque which was about 1,5 hour drive, and to Fajardo, where we took the ferry over to Vieques for 2 days. We didn't find time to explore more on the west coast, but the house is ideally situated for excursions in either direction, east or west. It will have to be next time! We really hope there will be a next time, and that we can stay at you beautiful house again. You have been wonderful hosts from start to finish, accommodating every wish. We have had a lovely time! Thank you very much from all of us!
Best regards from
Hilde Jennings and family
We have stayed at a few VRBO homes and have been happy, this home topped them all. The house was extremely clean, and stocked with all the extras a person could ask for. You can tell a home where the owners are close enough to make sure their investment is maintained. The outdoor deck was where we lived half covered for the nights with rain and the uncovered portion great for sunning. The great beach is a 4 minute walk or 1 minute in the car, the local eateries were great and the entire stay was fabulous, we look forward to visiting again.

Wonderful home “Villa Charespi” with great ocean views, great location and the best hostess you can find. Jorge and Maria are just wonderful and you know they care about their guest and their home. We stayed 5 nights with 4 children ages 7,10,13,15 a total of 4 children and two adults. You are greeted by the amazing view of the ocean from the terrace and you walk into a beautifully decorated and kept home. Jorge and Maria make sure you are accommodated and up to date on the home’s overall functions and access. The house is perfect for relaxing and provides all the necessary essentials for a carefree stay. The location is perfect to go out and explore the area or to go out in your own adventure. We felt safe in a gated and secured home, several of the neighbors would drive by and say hello. There’s nothing like a morning cup of P.R. coffee with “pan fresco” (fresh bread) from the local Panaderia (store) overlooking the sight and sounds of the ocean.
We hit the Mar Chiquita beach several times (my favorite beach in P.R.), it’s like a three minute walk or you can drive and park within one minute (recommended). If you venture to the right of Mar Chiquita to the “secondary beach” you can see “Villa Charespi”. Nearby beaches include Los Tubos Beach and Vega Baja beach. Vega Beach has a very nice 15 min drive and has bathroom and bath facilities for the little ones, highly recommended. They also have a life guard and tide pool for the little ones.
Another trip is to the Arecibo Lighthouse & Historic Park –kids love it and the Cueva Venta with amazing views from the cave.
The home is close to shopping at the Prime Outlets by Barceloneta, also recommended (hit the name brand stores for great prices). Another day trip we took is the recommended ferry to Old San Juan from Catano, it’s only .50 per pp and $4.00 parking. Leave early to beat the crowds and the hot sun.
Overall it’s a great place to be during your visit to P.R., have fun and enjoy, we will definitely re-book again. Thank you Jorge and Maria for providing access to your beautiful home, kids loves it, we loved it and we hope to be back soon.
We loved Villa Charespi, especially the terrace with such amazing views, a refreshing breeze and the sound of the ocean below. The house is even better than the photos. Maria and Jorge are the perfect hosts. We were a party of 5 (2 adults and 3 teenagers) and we found the villa to be very spacious. We were travelling with 2 other families who all gathered together at the villa for evening meals - plenty of room for us all on the spacious terrace.
We enjoyed the short walk to the beautiful local beach every morning, each time we had the place to ourselves, except for the neighbors little dog who liked to accompany us! The local bakery/shop is very well stocked and our kids loved the freshly made Puerto Rican bread.
This was our first visit to Puerto Rico and we would highly recommend it. We only stayed 5 nights but packed in a lot of adventures:
- Horse riding on Los Tubos beach from the stables just close to the villa that Maria recommended to us
- Cave Tubing & Rappelling with Tanama River Adventures
- Ziplining at Torro Verde
- Visiting Old San Juan via the Cantano ferry
We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend the villa to others.
