By walking one block north on Kuhio Highway, one is in the center of quaint Kapa’a town, with restaurants, shops, banks and a handful of other local businesses. To reach `Ohi`a Kai from Lihue Airport, turn right at the traffic light as you’re leaving the airport. The road becomes Kuhio Highway at the next traffic light. Continue straight for about nine miles. Along the way you will cross the Wailua River, pass the Coconut Marketplace shopping and dining complex on your right, pass two adjacent shopping centers on your left, pass more restaurants on your left, and come to a traffic light in front of a small shopping complex with a Big Save grocery store, U.S. Post Office, and Shell gas station. A few blocks further and you will see a left-turn only lane in front of the Latter Day Saints Church. There is no traffic light here, but you will see the entrance to Pono Kai resort directly to your right and a sign welcoming you to downtown Kapa`a in the grassy area ahead. Turn left onto `Ohia Street. Note that this is a 90° turn. `Ohi`a Kai, clearly marked with green signs, is four houses down, at the end of this short street, just before the gate to a county property.

Park in front of the cottage or along the fence on the church side of ohia street. If we are not there when you arrive we will have a lock box on the front door. If you plan to arrive in the evening, contact us prior to your arrival so that we can give you the lock box combination.

We are one block from Pono Kai, an oceanfront resort. Across the road from our property is the Church of Latter Day Saints.

Sept 2015 Review

This property is well kept and has all the essentials including internet and air conditioning which will make you the envy of many people locally who depend on the trade winds to stop you sweltering on the island. Its a stones throw away from kapaa's restaurants and bars and the sea front if you fancy watching the sunrise, or a stroll along the beach. Kapaa its self is excellently situated for amenities on the island and is well situated for seeing everything on the island as it is relatively central. It is also very close to some of the islands best beaches on the coconut coast. The owners are extremely friendly, offer prompt customer service, or quick help if you need it (i.e locking your self out in the middle of the night). On several occasions i was delighted to find gifts of fruit that they had sourced from their garden. An excellent property and the best value i could

Lovely couple, great advice on what to do and see, excellent location (Really glad we stayed in Kapaa instead of South or North). The place has everything you need or want.

What a great place!

  • 5 of 5

We affectionately nicknamed Ohia Kai "Camp Kauai." We had such a nice time there. Our renter, Bob, was so warm and welcoming. We got fresh fruit and flowers from his garden. The beds were comfortable, and the lounge chair and BBQ grill got lots of use! I will most definitely be back and will rent here again.

Cute and quirky cottage

  • 4 of 5

This is a cute little cottage, in a great location on Kauai. Very convenient to the highway, plus quick access to the north and south end of the island. About 15 minutes to the airport. Walking distance to stores, shops and the beach (3-4 blocks). There are a few quirky things about it, such as one of the beds being a futon in the living room, and sink for dishes being a small hand sink in the bedroom. But it had everything we needed, and served our purposes well. There is a lovely little patio out front, and we really enjoyed that.

Owner was personable, and quick to respond to our questions. He also stopped by a couple of times just to check if we had questions and brought fresh fruit. Space accommodated two of us just fine. It would have been tight with more people. Touches such as lawn chairs and a cooler for our use were appreciated.

Owner's Response: Aloha Thanks for the nice review. There is a full sink to wash dishes on the side of the cottage next to the hot water heater and beach chairs and cooler are available for guests but we leave them in the laundry room. I'll add this info to our check in document so future guests will know. We hope to see you next year either in our cottage or the Hale on Kauai or our vacation rental in Honolulu. Aloha Bob

Great location! Quite run down cottage

  • 2 of 5

One block from a beautiful beach; one block from all the cute shops and restaurants of Kapa'a; 10 feet from a huge diesel truck that idles for 10 minutes at 6:30am every weekday morning. Kauai is beautiful, and the Ohia Kai is in a great location, but the cottage is quite run down. We wanted to love it, since the owners are so nice and it's a cool cottage in a great location. But it's just... old. Old and worn rugs, furniture, blankets, floors, drapes, etc. I'm sure the place was cleaned before we arrived, but it doesn't really matter. You can clean that wood toilet seat all you want, but it's absorbed a lot of urine and is always going to smell.

Now for the worst part: the back door is just a screen - no actual door - and it has a two inch gap at the bottom. As a result the place was crawling with bugs. Despite the 10 cockroach traps scattered about the place when we arrived, we still saw a bunch of them (and smashed them as best we could). One morning a nearly-dead mouse crawled into the place (probably having eaten poison outside, and then wandered in to the cottage). It sat there by the bathroom, catatonic. Bob came by to remove it, and that's when we discovered it still had some life in it. So he severed its head with a shovel, threw it away... and didn't do any more clean up. So the entrance to the bathroom had some bits of... I don't even want to know what. Again - really sweet people, and they were very responsive any time there was an issue (such as the water heater not working the first night we got there)! But, different standards of acceptable cleanliness. I talked with Bob afterward, and he said they're going to put a door on the back. But why wasn't it there before? Why wasn't this place SEALED UP? Basically we were afraid to touch anything in the cottage the whole time because it just wasn't clean, and there were cockroaches, ants, and a mouse! Again, I'm sure the cleaner people did a fine job - but we feel that this place needs to be redone from the ground up. Seal the windows, seal the doors, put in new floors, fresh furniture, new towels and bed linens, etc. Start fresh! Can't do anything about that diesel truck, though. We paid some good money to stay here, and it wasn't worth it.

A Great Little Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Originally, I admit I had some hesitation on the idea of staying in a cottage like this since there are so many times you find a place like this and it turns out to be a dump. This is absolutely not the case. The place is well maintained and I found it quite attractive. The area is quiet, while being at the end of s small road secluded enough to eliminate the attention of those interested in "borrowing" your stuff. I found the place comfortable.

The area is full of places to take care of travel needs. Cafes, diners, gas and gift shops. All within easy walking distance. Vehicle traffic on the main road is a bit of a concern, but there is no controlling that. It's the nature of the beast. Despite that it works out to be a pleasant place to stay.

Owner's Response: mahao and hope to see you next year. We had just put two new a/c in the cottage and glad they worked so well. While this guest and our prior guest was staying with us we had several days of record beating temperatures of 92 with high humid conditions so we are glad our a/c worked so well. Many vacation rentals on Kauai don't even have air conditioning. Niele left our place very clean and was a great guest.
