Seascape cottage, absolutely on the ocean with a dock on the Sea of Abaco

Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

The floor plan includes two bedrooms, two full baths, sleeps 4 to 6

To get a true feeling for what this house is really all about, with ocean on one side and White Sound on the other, take a look at the video taken from the top deck:

Our house Seascape here in the Bahamas is absolutely on the ocean with adjoining frontage and a private dock in White Sound Bay on Elbow Cay Island. A two bedroom, two bath, air-conditioned beachfront cottage that makes for an outstanding 'out island' experience. Situated on a ridge, Seascape offers the best of both worlds: a breathtaking view of Sea of Abaco from its spacious rear deck and the roar of the ocean waves on the front. This dual frontage is unique on the island and only shared with two other houses. Seascape's floor plan includes two bedrooms, two full baths, and a large sofa to sleep two additional people in the living area. Air conditioning is provided for the two bedrooms to insure your comfort on hot summer evenings. The house comes complete with cooking utensils, place settings for six, glasses, bed linens and towels. You have your own private dock directly at the rear of the property instead of a long walk. High speed internet and satellite TV are furnished.

Seascape is located on White Sound Bay on Elbow Cay Island. This is a small island approximately 190 miles east of Florida. Temperatures average in the 70's in the winter and the 80's in the summer. The ocean breezes flow through the rooms making it comfortable year round. White Sound is less than a ten minute boat ride from the quaint settlement of Hope Town and its famous 'candy-striped' lighthouse. The inhabitants of Hope Town are descendants of the Loyalists who fled the Carolinas during the Revolutionary War. They still speak the dialect of their ancestors. Hope Town is nestled in a picturesque harbor and the vibrant reds, pinks, and yellows of the native hibiscus and bougainvillaea surround the Cape Cod style homes.

Transportation around the island is mostly by boat or on foot. Bicycles and golf carts can be rented by the day or week. You will find Hope Town to be quite charming. There are several small grocery stores, a liquor store, bakery, straw shop, gift shops, a museum, and churches. There are a number of island restaurants, some of which are Sea Spray, Captain Jack's, The Harbor's Edge and the Abaco Inn. These restaurants serve delicious grouper, conch, lobster (in season) and other excellent native dishes. Shorts are all that is required for formal dress.

We have installed a Sirius Satellite radio receiver in the house. After you return home I think you will find yourself missing commercial free programming. This certainly solved my frustration with radio reception in the islands. I also arranged to have an Wireless internet connection for a laptop computer. Their service is much faster than my own at home via two way satellite and much in line with cable. With this location goes the problems of salt corrosion on every thing that has any metal parts. In our effort to assure reliability of all the many mechanical devices that are subjected to this salt environment we have on hand extra AC units, refrigerator and a water heater in storage. Paste these coordinates into Google Earth and it will put a pin on the roof of the house

About Robert M. George

I’ve been a builder for the past 50 years, 65 if you include my first tree house. I have built pretty much everything I own. With a background in engineering I am able to work with electrical, plumbing and HVAC with no problem. With the wood shop on my farm I enjoy making furniture for family members and cabinets for my Real Estate in Louisville. I live on a farm on the banks of the Ohio River where I tend my herd of Black Angus cattle. With the address of 7400 East George road in Leavenworth Indiana, Google Earth will put an X on my house. I am a pilot and own a 1947 J3 Piper Cub that I fly out of a 2800 foot runway on my farm, that’s not exactly true, I let my son do the flying now, my reaction time isn’t as good as it once was and a Cub is a bear to land.

I love the water, not much more to say.

Robert M. George purchased this cottage in 1984

Why Robert M. George chose Hope Town

You can't get any closer to the water. You have the Ocean out front with a beach pretty much to yourself. When the surf is up this is where the locals come to show off their skills on their boards. You have a dock to the rear where you tie up your boat, no log walk carrying stuff to the dock.

What makes this cottage unique

This is the place on the island where people come to take pictures of a most unique beach and seascape. They also come to get four bars on their cell phones .

You will notice our property is priced below the market. This cost does not reflect the quality of the house. It has by far one of the best locations on the island. We have many returning guests and are holding the cost down. It is a consensus among many owners to have a high rental fee to reduce the number of dates occupied reducing wear and tear. This method of reasoning will still maintain about the same net bottom line income. There is also an influx of many new houses that are privately owned, not rented and very seldom use by the owners. Both of these tendencies are a detriment to the local economy that depend on a high volume of tourist trade to flourish. I have decided not to participate in this line of reasoning.

Prefect for our family!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I first traveled solo and stayed on Tilloo. However, when we returned last year with our kids (11 and 14) we thought staying on Elbow would be better for them. The house was prefect. Two bed, two bath with twins for the kids. We couldn’t figure out the internet but good riddens, we don’t vacation for WiFi. The island does have power outages from time to time but that never bothered us either! The house had games which made the evenings fun with the kids and it was perfect walking distance to whatever we wanted. Always rent a boat and we rented kayaks and paddle boards for the kids which was perfect. Would definitely stay there again!

fell in love with this house!

  • 5 of 5

This house is in a really beautiful location and surprisingly it had everything we needed and more! My first impression was the view, its absolutely breathtaking being able to see both the ocean side and sea side from the roof. This house reminded me exactly of our old family beach house with the stairs to the roof and the wooden vintage beach house style. You can really tell this house has a lot of character and someone has put a lot of effort in to making it a decorative and comfortable space, although it is somewhat small and minimalistic, it was just what we like. I was surprised it had Sirus XM radio hooked up to play on the stereo, we really enjoyed that. And there was also a Vhf radio just incase I had to communicate with my boyfriend while he's fishing if our phones weren't working. TV and WIFI worked well for us too. It was nice that we could tie our boat up at our own dock too, very convenient. My only one worry about the house was the dock it seemed a little weathered but it was just fine, i was just worried about the boys possibly stomping around on a weak board because years ago my cousin fell through a dock.. But really just like any wooden dock everyone should wear shoes and be careful. We DEFINITELY will come back to this house its the in the perfect location for going out to the restaurants and bars on your golf cart, doing yoga on the roof deck, or just relaxing inside in the A/C, it was a great choice for our first time in the Bahamas.

Beautiful views! Helpful owner and caretaker.

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a week here and loved it. The views can’t be beat. We came to boat and the location was perfect for boating. The dock was shallow at low tide but handled my 24’er no problem. Like many of the rentals here the interior is a little dated but we loved the high ceilings and open feel. Everything worked and we had better TV and internet and satellite radio then expected. We felt this rental was a value based on the picture perfect views of the bay on one side and ocean on the other. This property has 5 decks! I’m missing sitting on the patio drinking my coffee and listening to the waves crash. My kids loved going to the roof top deck at night and star gazing.

beautiful views but!

  • 1 of 5

No WiFi for the first week, coffee maker was broken and replaced with another broken coffee maker, no generator and we lost power every other day, termite infested, actually fell onto your plate while eating, cockroaches, decks so bad, we all got splinters, dock needs to be fixed the ladder is missing the bottom 2 steps so you can’t climb out of a boat, windows so warped, th rain comes in, outdoor furniture is so old you will fall through when you sit! The house would be amazing if it was fixed up!

Owner's Response: I have been attempting to keep the rental cost of our house down and one of the amenities not included is a backup generator. This guest claimed it was advertised with a generator but I don’t think you will find that anywhere in my listing. The bottom line here is it isn’t good enough to offer this house located on the best view on the island and at a reduced rate but better to install a backup generator to reduce bad reviews resulting with trashing the whole house in a review. That installation is currently under way as I write this. Power outages were fewer in number in the past but it now appears that a backup generator will be a must in renting any house on the island. I have replacement items in storage like coffee makers but it appears the one in storage went bad before it was even out of the box. Both were replaced with a new one from the local hardware store. The internet router did succumb to the salt air and was replaced as soon as we could get one from Marsh Harbour. We had no complaints about the dock steps but that is currently being taken care of. All the items listed on this review will be addressed as soon as possible.

Great house and location for the price

  • 4 of 5

This house has an unbelievable location on Elbow Cay. Beautiful views, surf on one side, the sound with a good dock on the other. Next door is the Abaco Inn which has the best restaurant, bar, pool, and wait staff on the island.

AC in the bedrooms was great for sleeping on hot nights.

We are trying to decide when to rent Seascape for next year!

Interesting stay

  • 1 of 5

Our stay was interesting. The house has a great location with great views. But the house is put together with "Mac gver" type systems. Mainly because the owner has not kept up the accommodations. The deck has screws that you can trip on and the dock is not for children to spend to much time on. We had to call Wanda the caretaker to come look at the water tanks and switch tanks. And we had power outages and had to stay at abaco inn for one night because they had a backup generator. Wanda the caretaker was great and took care of us she was great. But I could tell there was some things that she help because the house is in need of some major work. The owner has a reputation of being real cheap according to the locals, and the house shows it. It's ashamed because the house has so much potential. I would suggest that future guess look for a rental with a backup generator so you don't sleep in your own sweat. The million dollar view don't mean much when your hot and sweaty and need to cool off. Opening the windows did not help. So next time we will not stay here at all and do not recommend. And putting disclaimers in the rental agreement that some things might not work is down right "CHEAP".

Owner's Response: I will have to admit it’s not the first time the term “Mac gver" has been directed at me, engineers get that a lot. I had a gust state that the MacGyver comment didn't bother him, he though that it was a disparaging remark. I accept this label as a compliment, it has solved problems that were unsolvable any other way. The reason for the disclaimers is that some of the invented systems for providing water in the case of some component failure will be a case where nobody has any idea how they work and won't be able to fix it. The failed component will need to be replaced and the work around removed till I can get it back on line. My inventions do away with waiting for a component replacement. The house also has a safety device to prevent the water pump from self-destructing when a tank runs dry. It will need the assistance of my caretaker to come down and switch to the backup tank not replace the pump. If other houses have backup tanks they will need this same service, haven't figured out how to make this automatic. I have provided my invention for pump safety shutdown to other houses on the island, the water backup is too complicated. For the “million dollar view” and the close proximity to the ocean some electronic systems will undoubtedly fail and screws will work themselves loose. I did make a repair trip down there and found six or so screws in the total of hundreds that had worked lose. We did the best we could with an offer to pay for another house but that was declined by our guest. We did however provide a night at the Abaco Inn. As far as “CHEAP" goes if you are looking for granite counter tops a dishwasher and a backup power source you’re going to need to come up with the big bucks for a much more expensive rental and give up the absolutely fantastic location. My repeating guests don’t want to pay the extra rental rate or to give up the location for any of the other houses. I guess a one star out of all the five stars isn’t a bad track record.
