This was our second trip to Culebra, our first was staying at a Guesthouse by the airport. We decided we wanted to pay the extra to get a view and have a more private experience. Carlos from Carlos Jeep picked us up at the airport and brought us to the Resort. He is so genuine about making you feel like family and you can tell his passion and detail in putting this resort together. He's built a few cottages over the years on the hilltop and they all look incredible!
First reaction walking is was it's better than the pictures (the view, how clean it was, the setup). The balcony is huge with a large hammock an area to eat breakfast each morning. The kitchen provides everything you need (full size fridge, stovetop, microwave, coffee maker, toaster) except an oven and dishwasher but this is common in most rentals on the island.
Even though there are other properties on the hilltop, they've done a great job providing privacy on the balconies and we didn't hear any neighbors enough to disturb us. And yes, the roosters at 4am are normal and everywhere on the island. The unit has AC, and blackout screens on the windows so it was very comfortable. Most of the time you can have the AC off and open the windows for the breeze without letting the mosquitos in.
Only thing I'd recommend for management is to get a fan for the balcony for when there's not much of a breeze since this is the only place you can (and of course would want) to eat. My wife didn't put OFF on one time before we ate and got destroyed by the mosquitos. Other than that no bites.
They provide a beach cooler, 2 beach chairs and 2 beach towels which is a must for the visit. We stayed a week and someone would come and clean almost everyday it seemed, but this might be different for shorter stays.
They have a new restaurant (food trailer setup with covered patio with a crazy view of the island) next to the resort. It's called Krusty Crab but the owner wasn't back from Cuba so we weren't able to try it.
Overall impression was management/cleanliness/view was better than expected. Carlos showed us around to the other "cottages" and we thought this specific one was still the best, but it depends on your needs (kitchen size, view, balcony, etc). He's building a new one next door which we'll check out next time before booking, but definitely renting one of these from now on! You won't regret it!
My wife and I were so blessed to find this place for our honeymoon. It was an adventure!
The listing was more than what the photographs could even attempt to convey. It was perfect!
If we could have stayed there another week, we would have in a heart beat! The property was beyond well maintained and cleaned and there were so many utensils to promote spending time in the cottage.
If you are considering the island of Culebra, this is a place you need to stay. The incredible sunrises, sunsets, and views throughout the day are priceless and something a resort can't replicate.
Some places near that we really enjoyed
Dinghy Dock, Zaco's Tacos, & Sweet and Naughty!
Do Mike's Sailing! Riding on a sailboat all day for a good price too!
These are musts in Culebra!
Stayed for a week at end March/early Apr. Very conveniently located at the top of a hill with an incredible view from the huge outdoor deck where we spent hours watching the water and the stars - and sipping Don Q. Deck faces west so it does get quite hot for the couple of hours before sunset but VERY pleasant temps at other times - particularly at night. Deck is equipped with a dining table and chairs as well as a comfortable hammock. Deck awning works ok but has a big tear which slightly interferes with operation. The owner has several properties for rent on this large, nicely landscaped site (and building more) but we found it generally quiet and peaceful. Not sure if this might change when all the cottages are completed and fully occupied. Property staff use a storage area directly underneath the elevated cottage almost daily but they were always quiet and unobtrusive. Had a couple nighttime visits from a neighing horse wandering by on its own as well as periodic daytime rooster crowing - both added to the charm. We did have a surprise 7:00 am wake-up from nearby construction activity one day, but not a big deal. Only a few minutes drive into town and maybe a 7 minute drive to gorgeous Flamenco beach. Outstanding Zoni beach a pleasant 15 - 20 minute drive. We LOVE the beach and these beaches are without question spectacular! Owner-provided beach chairs, towels, and cooler should definitely be put to good use.
The relatively new, well-constructed cottage is a large studio with a small, but reasonably well-equipped kitchen area and a very nice bathroom - the shower is terrific. Property is kept very clean. We did little cooking this trip but note there is no dishwasher and the only condiments that are provided are salt and pepper. Bed was a bit on the soft side but comfortable. AC worked like a champ. Mosquitoes were a minor nuisance during our stay ( 30% DEET was not completely effective). The window screens don't properly fit the windows so we chose not to leave the windows open - a shame because the nighttime breezes would have been preferred to the AC. WIFI worked well-enough. Definitely want to have your own motorized transport for your stay as the steep hill would not be fun to walk up/down (We recommend a jeep instead of a golf cart). All in all - a very pleasant stay on a beautiful, friendly island. Would return in a heartbeat.
This place is excellent for couples getaway. Great view. Clean and comfortable. We'll be back!
We loved the view, the privacy, the view, the decor, and the view! It is as beautiful as the pictures appear.
Just the loveliest cottage to relax, enjoy the spectacular views, and then venture off. The cottage was perfectly described and their photos are exactly the way it looked. We rose in the am and found one of the many beaches that Culebra offers and then used our place to rest in the sunniest part of the day. The hammock rocked us for a nap and the bed was very comfortable . Then went off to another beach later in the day. The towels, cooler and chairs were a bonus. We ate at Dingy Dock,( would recommend), pizza down at ferry area, and cooked once,,,everything was there for cooking. But to eat out on the porch at sunset was so quiet, peaceful and romantic, you must do. We had no trouble with mosquitoes, I brought spray but never used and there was some off provided.
There are many beaches to explore. We are in our 60's and hiked to Carlos Rosario beach were there was perfect snorkeling from the beach and very few people.
At first we didn't know our way around Culebra but a staff told us about maps at the jeep rental. They are right there so make sure you ask for one. Carlos jeep rental drove us up to Chango with us so we never asked for a map. They are all over town too.
We highly recommend this cottage and hope one day to come back for a week. We took the ferry in for$4 and flew out for$60 to caught a flight in San Juan. Both were great ways to get here. If you come to Chango's Nest Cottage you will be very happy and ENJOY!
