I stayed at Pitirres Cottage in May, and I loved it so much I extended my stay for an extra day. The details in the cottage were awesome. I loved everything--from the shuttered screen windows (there is no A/C, but there is a ceiling fan and an additional floor fan is provided) to the outdoor shower with water heated by solar energy). The view from the deck was spectacular. The wi-fi was somewhat spotty, but I figured that it was just a sign that I needed to disconnect from technology and connect with my surroundings. I think the roosters woke me up on the first morning, but after that, they just added to the charm of the island. I did meet another property owner while I was visiting, but when I return (and I definitely will), I want to most definitely stay in one of Carlos' cottages again.
My fiance and I stayed at Pitarres Nest for a week in January 2016. We loved Culebra and the cottage. Culebra is very laid back which is perfect for us. For those who seek more of a "resort" atmosphere or nightlife this may not be the place for you. If, however, you're looking for a simple low key spot, then Culebra is one of the best islands I've been to. Check-in was easy at the same place we rented our Jeep (Carlos Jeep Rental). Golf carts and Jeeps are the mainstay of the rental fleet on Culebra. Personally for this property and in general, I would suggest a Jeep. The clerk at Carlos had us follow her up the hill to the gated compound where the cottage is. This was good as I'm not sure we would have found it otherwise. Like most Caribbean islands navigating the streets is basically trial and error until you learn your way around. On a side note, parking at the cottage is ample, but parking in the town of Dewey can be quite challenging. The cottage is set on a large parcel just as the description says along with several other cottages. Pitirres is the most private. It sits down the hill surrounded on 3 sides by vegetation. It's advisable to take the provided LED flashlight with you, as navigating the windy path down from the parking area can be fun in the dark after consuming a couple of rum drinks!
We did have a couple of minor issues during our stay. The first was wi-fi that didn't work upon arrival the second was the failure of the water pump on our last day. With that said, Lynnette was easy to reach via text message and responded very quickly. As you can imagine getting things fixed on a very small island can be a challenge. Even though the technician and parts had to come from the main island of PR, these items were addressed and fixed very quickly. Considering the remote location I was quite pleased with the time frame.
This is the tropics, so one should be prepared for bugs and lizards. We didn't have any major issues with either inside, but it can be buggy outside at night. The cottage doesn't have A/C. We knew that going in, and with fans the temps were not too bad at night, but a little warm during the day. Our one complaint would be that the awning on the front of the cottage was wired closed and unusable. We think the afternoon temps would have been lower indoors if we could have used the awning to create some shade.
All in all, we were very happy with our stay here and may very well return next Jan/Feb!
It seems like the perfect time to write this review, one we've been meaning to do for some time. Why the perfect time? I type as I sit on the balcony of this lovely little cabin way up the hill, looking out at the sailboats passing by, watching raptors fly below, and listen to the skittering of tiny beautiful lizards. This is our third stay here, and we continue to love it. The views are lovely, and the entire structure is a piece of art built with attention and pure vision. The outdoor shower is a wonderful place to end a long day of sun and snorkeling, the kitchenette is a perfect size for simple meals, and the night breezes provide some of the best sleeping conditions possible. An additional plus is the spot-on WiFi service, something new to this trip (we often had trouble connecting before, but now it could not be better). Lynette is prompt with both emails and texts, and overall has been really great to deal with during our repeated visits. Book this place (except for when we want to come back, of course)!
Thank you for your beautiful cabin! The view and seclusion are utterly stupendous, and the interior is gorgeous. (Loved the cotton sheets!) The outdoor shower is lovely with the nooks in stone for storing shower items. So quiet with a wonderful cross-breeze provided by screened windows and fan. No one should not be daunted by lack of AC. The ventilation is so much better than AC--everything is natural and fresh. A must-do.
My husband and I stayed at this property for a portion of our honeymoon in Aug. 2014. First, the positives: the view is gorgeous. There is no getting around that. On our last night, the skies were perfectly clear, and you could see straight to Vieques and mainland PR. Queen size bed was comfortable, decorated quite nicely. Now for the cons: BUGS. You are definitely in the trees, and with that comes bugs. I got several bites, despite bug spray when outside, and a few inside (the doors and windows do not make bug-proof seals). We also came home one night to a 3-inch spider on the ceiling above the bed. There is no A/C on the property, so it gets very hot during the day, and doesn't cool off too much at night. We knew this coming to the property, but were expecting a hilltop breeze since you are so high up. Unfortunately, there are about 30 stairs down to the cottage, so the breeze stays where you park your car as it is buffered by the trees surrounding the cottage, which leads to the construction of the cottage. There is a corrugated metal roof. Very good for baking the property. Also, the property manager is fluent in English, but does not understand it, as all requests that were made were ignored. We were told we could have an early check-in, and was one of the reasons we chose this location, but upon arrival, were denied this. The kitchenette was lacking in functionality, and when we emailed property manager about broken appliances, we received no response. An outdoor grill was advertised, but was not present. Without a grill, your only cooking option is a gas range inside. My husband and I were split on the outdoor shower - the view was awesome, but the ants and bees made it difficult to completely relax. Also, the toilet clogs easily, and there is no plunger on the property. Overall, not a terrible home base, but by no means the relaxing paradise we were expecting. Book this place with your eyes open folks, very hot, bugs galore, and an unresponsive and unreliable property manager. If an absolutely stellar view can outweigh those, this is the place for you.
View to die for. Loved the outdoor shower and the woodwork on the deck! Extremely private. Lynette was very nice and was always available, when needed. P.S. -- No gas grill or AC for this property.
