Papaya House is a simple, comfortable, fully air-conditioned bungalow providing conveniences of a home, together with an efficient and friendly service.

You rent the property and enjoy amenities such as your private pool, bedrooms with ensuite shower rooms, WiFi, air-conditioning throughout the house, and a 49 inch smart tv with cable and Netflix in the living room.

There is comfort and convenience in renting a home away from home, rather than one room in a hotel. We price the property based on occupancy so that it is affordable even for a solo traveller. Our rates are £40 per night for single occupancy to £140 per night for maximum occupancy of eight people. There is a full list of rates below.

Our local property manager, Mike, is on hand in a small apartment adjoining the house. He has a separate front door so you may not see him very often but he is on hand should you have any questions. Mike was born in England but has lived in Trinidad since the age of about two. His family, including parents and grandparents, have lived in the immediate area (some in neighbouring properties) for five generations so far. When you make an enquiry you will be contacting Mike's daughter, Nerissa, who now lives in England but returns to Trinidad about two or three times each year with her husband and son.

Mike offers a taxi service and/or tours for those interested. He enjoys showing and chatting about Trinidad with our guests, and goes that extra mile to find, as he has in the past, a steelband practice out of season for guests looking to experience it. He has also arranged the required permits for guests going turtle watching in Grande Riviere. For further details of Mike's taxi services and tours please scroll down below.

That can be further combined with, for example, the return leg being on a different route including a stop at Asa Wright.

Arrangements and payment for driving/ tours are made directly to Michael.

PHOTOS:

All photos on this listing were taken by us on a compact camera or mobile phone. We have tried to keep the photos of the house updated. The scenic pics are a few of our favourites from a large collection over the years. As this site limits the number of photos to twenty-four and I have of course included many photos of the property, I had just a few spaces left for the scenic/tour photos. Please note that the scenic photos have been taken in various parts of Trinidad (see photo titles) and are not in the immediate vicinity of the house.

True Trinidad hospitality

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house as a base for our family to stay during a family reunion with Trinidad-based extended family and friends.

The facilities were excellent, with enough living, kitchen and yard space to accommodate two gatherings of 20-30 people. The best part was getting to know Michael, the onsite property manager, who looked after us, made multiple airport pick-ups in his van and drove us to the North Coast for a daylong outing as well as transport to a boat trip to the Caroni wildlife reserve, The house is located in a safe neighborhood, in walking distance to the produce market and the bus line. We recommend it for a true Trinidad living experience. With four bedrooms, each with its own bath, it works well for a family or a group of couples.

One piece of advice: if you are a North American accustomed to using a wash/face cloth, you will need to bring your own. Otherwise, plenty of bath towels are provided.

Thank you, Michael and Nerissa.

Owner's Response: Hi Kathryn Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are happy to have played this very small part in the coming together of your family and friends. It is especially wonderful to hear how comfortable you were at the house and how convenient/ useful/ enjoyable you found the transfers and tour services. It's always good to know how we can make our guests' stays even better; we will add a supply of wash cloths to each bathroom. We hope to welcome you and your family again in the future. Best wishes, Michael and Nerissa

A Birdwatchers Paradise

  • 5 of 5

The service from the owners of this vacation property from the first email contact to the drop off at the airport was exceptional. Nerissa answered every question we had and Michael took us everywhere we wanted to go. The house had everything the four of us needed to be comfortable and plenty of room to stretch out. We could sit in the backyard or float around the pool and watch tanagers, parrots, doves, and other birds fly in and out. The Farmers Market up the road made it very easy for us to get the things we needed for mealtimes. The van was very well equipped and we were able to stow lots of gear. We spent ten lovely days in Trinidad in a variety of habitats birdwatching. Michael knew all the hotspots and how to get to them. He took us to scenic overlooks and to the beaches and even a few places he'd never been. It was a great location at an extremely affordable price. We were able to visit some of the premier birding locations for a fraction of the cost of booking through a tour company. I highly recommend this rental for anyone wishing to travel around the island and stay within a budget. Thank you so much for a great vacation.

Truly a Home Away from home!

  • 4 of 5

Our stay was from 3rd August 2013 but being 2 years ago, I cannot select that date from the menu. Nevertheless, I have been meaning to write this review for a long time and it is better late than never. We were a family group, I am a local of Trinidad & Tobago and the rest of my family travelling that time with me are Italian. It was perfect for us because we had all the comforts of being at home although far away from home on vacation. Every morning we had breakfast outdoors poolside listening to the birds whistling and enjoying the caribbean breeze and every now and again there was a family of iguanas that scurried across the garden much to our delight! The booking was made simple and hassle free thanks to Nerissa and her Dad Michael was always there ensuring that we were OK. Thank you so much for everything!

A Memorable Visit to Trinidad

  • 5 of 5

We had a such a wonderful time on this trip! Our main purpose was to visit family, which we accomplished with great ease having Papaya House as our home base.

Papaya house was perfect for our group. The kids could not get enough of the pool, we were able to cook nice meals, we loved having access to a washing machine. Everything worked well.

Michaels was extremely helpful and kind. We used his driver/tour guide services on several occasions.

We will be back on our next visit!

Thank you, Nerissa and Mike!
