History: The seafront location was part of the commune of Ollioules. In the 16th century the seigneur established a fishing village here, clustered around the medieval watchtower, under the protection of 'Sanct Nazari' of Lérins Abbey. The port was constructed and the harbor deepened in the mid-16th century. The little fishing port of Saint Nazari was finally granted its independence from Ollioules in 1688 and in 1890 its local name in Provençal Sanary, which was formalized and distinguished as sur-Mer in 1923.

Optional 'femme de menage': This incurs a cost of 50 euros per week. The 'femme de menage' (house keeper) will come in and change your sheets and give the house a dust and hoover and various other toiletries. Please ask if your stay is longer than one week and you would like this option.

  • There is no bath but a spacious shower room. Outside the shower enclosure are fitted cupboards and mirrors and a loo and towel rails. There is a hairdryer for your use.

The balcony is the dining room in the summer months and there is an extra fridge/freezer in a cupboard on the balcony. We are on the first floor and so wheelchairs would not be possible.

Sanary is a wonderful place to stay and this apartment is is a prime location, right on the harbour front. There are many cafes, bars and restaurants within strolling distance although the wonderful balcony means you do not have to leave the apartment to savour the atmosphere of Sanary.

The apartment is very well equipped and the owners are a delight to deal with. A garage can be rented which is useful as the nearest car park is often busy.

I would highly recommend staying here, and will definitely return.

With the second fridge/freezer to hand, it is also the 'dining room'. Watching the boats come and go, reading, whatever, there is never a dull moment which is why we love it so much. very good, perfect location

We met very few Brits, or other nationalities, only French Locals. Just what we were expecting as this was our third visit to Sanary. We made full use of the fabulous Markets and enjoyed the local restaurants. The bus service was very easy to use and cheap.

Sanary-sur-Mer is my personal paradise in France and we will certainly be visiting again a in the future.

Fantastic !

Sanary-sur-Mer is a delightful, small town on the Mediterranean. Its pretty harbour, sheltered by the Embiez islands, has brightly coloured “pointu” boats and a small fishing fleet which sells its catch on the portside every morning. Add to this the fine, sandy beaches, daily market, theatre, cinema, and all manner of entertainments throughout the year and you have all the ingredients for the perfect holiday.

We visit Sanary regularly and were delighted to find this superb apartment. The location could not be better, being right on the port and just a stone’s throw from the many restaurants and bars along the sea-front. A previous tenant noted in the visitors’ book that watching the activity from the balcony was more entertaining watching TV and we completely agreed. Having said that, the location is surprisingly quiet and the double-glazing ensures a good night’s sleep.

The apartment is spacious, nicely decorated and well furnished. The sitting room is bright and sunny with a wall of French windows leading to the large balcony, where we were able to eat breakfast and lunch even though our visit was in December. The beds are comfortable with good linen. As we love cooking, we liked the kitchen with its 4-ring gas hob, electric oven, microwave, dishwasher and two fridges (one of which is out on the balcony). The gas central heating was very efficient, keeping us nice & warm, and the hot water plentiful. There are plenty of plates, cutlery, glasses etc and some nice extras (like candles and DVDs) which we greatly appreciated. There’s also wifi, which enabled us to send photos of our visit to our jealous family!

Booking could not have been easier. From the first email, the owners treated us like long-lost friends rather than complete strangers. Access to the apartment was similarly straight-forward and we were met by their friendly local agent.

We shall return again and again – in fact we’ll be back in a couple of weeks! All that’s left to say is Araminta and Charles “Thank you so much”.

Having said that a great majority of guests do return at least once and so we must be doing something right! Our general policy is that if we leave the cupboards full guests are able to enjoy themselves and when they leave they replenish things for the next guests and it seems to work well. Wonderful Week!

What a fantastic flat... We stayed there with our two teenage children and it was fabulous. There is an enormous selection of local restaurants and they even have a boat! There is a wide variety of activities for all ages from; all water-sports to cultural visits. The apartment has parking very close to the flat which is great! The balcony is large and great to have breakfast and lunch on and even dine in on in the evenings. All in all this was a truly great place to spend our holiday.

Sehr schönes Apartment!

Wir hatten im Mai einen sehr schönen Aufenthalt in diesem Apartment! Schon der erste (und auch der darauf folgende) Kontakt mit den netten Vermietern war sehr angenehm und unkompliziert. Das Apartment ist sehr gut ausgestattet, geräumig und gemütlich. Jeden Tag hatten wir gleich morgens als erstes Highlight ein ausgiebiges Frühstück auf dem Balkon mit einem tollen Blick auf den Hafen. Dabei konnten wir das Treiben der Einheimischen und der Touristen ausgiebig beobachten :-) Das Apartment ist zentral gelegen, sodass man schnell mal eben einen Cafè oder einen Aperitif in einer der zahlreichen Bars (unser Favorit: Bar de la Marine) nehmen oder durch die Gassen mit vielen kleinen Geschäften bummeln kann. Weitere Highlights sind der tägliche Markt und der große Wochenmarkt (nur Mittwochs), auf dem man wirklich alles findet. Sanary ist wirklich ein sehr guter Ausgangspunkt für Ausflüge von Marseille bis St. Tropez, nach Aix en Provence und ins provenzalische Hinterland.

Das Apartment würden wir jederzeit wieder buchen und können es bedenkenlos weiterempfehlen!

Owner's Response: In May we had a very nice stay in this apartment! Even the first (and the subsequent) Contact with nice owners were very pleasant and uncomplicated. The apartment is very well equipped, spacious and cozy. Every day we had the same morning as the first highlight a hearty breakfast on the balcony with a great view of the harbor. We were able to observe the activity of the locals and the tourists extensively :-) The apartment is centrally located so you sometimes just (our favorite: Bar de la Marine) quickly a café or an aperitif in one of the many bars or take the streets can stroll with many small shops. Other highlights include the daily market and the large weekly market (Wednesdays only), where you really find anything. Sanary is really a very good starting point for trips to St. Tropez, Marseille, Aix en Provence and Provencal countryside. The apartment we would not hesitate to book again and would not hesitate to recommend! Thank you for your kind remarks. We are so glad you enjoyed our apartment so much and all that Sanary has to offer. Watching the world go round from the balcony is a favourite for us too, especially when sipping the local rose wine! We agree with you that there are so many places to visit like St Tropez, Marseille and Aix en Provence amongst many other lovely towns, ports and villages. Sanary Sur Mer lies on the west side of one of France's most southern tips. Its located in-between the ports of Bandol and Toulon! To the west lies Bandol, famous for its red wine, 'in-famous' for its notorious grape, the Mourvèdre grape (50% legal minimum), these are considered to be the finest examples of wines made from this particular grape. Other permitted grapes for the red wines are Grenache, Cinsaut, and small quantities of Syrah and Carignan. Bandol is consequently also a popular tourist destination. Along the same stretch of coast as Sanary on the other side (to the East) lies Six Fours les Plages, famous for its long beaches, forest, Batterie du Cap Nègre, Chapelle de Pépiole, Chapelle Notre-Dame de Bonne-Garde dite Notre-Dame du Mai. All great places to visit and explore.
