I hired the Old Neptune for a mid-week business trip and it ticked all the boxes.
First impressions on arrival were great. What a beautiful house with bags of charm and charater. It has great living/communal areas and the bedrooms are all very individual and finished immaculately. I loved how it felt like a labyrinth, with all its staircases and many tucked away rooms.
As a group of 13 we were lucky enough to have a room each but this house could easily accomdate many more people if sharing rooms.
The kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed for our stay (once we had done a food shop) . The living room has an incredible fireplace and there were logs and kindling left for us. When we ran out of wood Peter kindly delivered some more later that day. The courtyard is stunning and the whole house wraps around it, I only wish we were here during summer so we could have enjoyed it more.
Great location, some found it a bit tricky to get to but I would suggest following the directions given by Peter to the Salthouse Harbour Hotel as the House sits directly behind it.
Peter also arranged for us to have a late checkout on our day of departure so we could have a meeting in the morning which was really helpful. The housekeeper and her team worked around us despite having another booking arriving only a few hours later.
I would not hesitate in recomending The Old Neptune for either a business or social occasion and I do hope to return here either with work or a group of friends.
Thank you Peter and the team :)
We spent a family weekend 'get together', meeting up from various corners of the U.K. On arrival we were met by the housekeeper who showed us around the house. I'd like to say I remembered where we went but the house has rooms and stairways all over the place which makes it very interesting. It's a really well maintained and clean property and steeped in history. 22 of us stayed the weekend. We had a lovely meal in the dining hall on friday and slept soundly in the comfortably heated bedrooms. In fact, considering the temperature outside was around freezing all weekend, we were all nice and cosy, especially around the huge fireplace for which there was an ample supply of logs.
Following a Saturday spent exploring Ipswich town centre, we all dressed up in Pirate theme for a 'Murder Mystery' evening and feast. This was made all the more entertaining due to the surroundings and character of the Neptune. The rest of the weekend was most relaxing. All the facilities were in very good order. Parking was not as much of a problem as we thought, with spaces adjacent to the Inn and nearby. Evenings were very quiet, despite being tucked away only a few metres from the bustling quayside.
This is a property we will be visting again.
The perfect place for a winter gathering!
We can't recommend this house highly enough, it's absolutely gorgeous, stuffed full of character, comfortable and warm (the open fireplace in the lounge is amazing), and completely unique. It's well equipped and secluded enough for a large group to relax away from the 'real' world and party in comfort. The maid and handyman were very helpful and the house was clean and welcoming. We had a brief walk around the marina (pretty) and along the towpath (eek), and the only downside was the uninspiring surrounding town, but to be fair, we never wanted to leave the house despite best laid plans. Thank you for a very special and memorable holiday, we can't wait for an excuse to come again!
Fabulous time had by all
We went to The Old Neptune with a group of 14 (6 couples and our 2 teenage children) to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary.
We had specifically wanted somewhere that gave every room their own bathroom - which was surprisingly difficult to find elsewhere.
The house was clean, warm, welcoming and well equipped.
The courtyard is very pretty
There were plenty of glasses of all types, crockery and cutlery.
The location was excellent - it feels secluded but is within a few moments walk of a range of bars and restaurants. There were interesting shops along the 10 minute walk into the main shopping centre.
I'd thoroughly recommend staying here.
ps it doesn't look very special from the road but it was wonderful from the moment we stepped into the courtyard
We celebrated my 70th birthday at this wonderful house with family and friends.I was rather nervious about going to Ipswich not knowing the place, what a pleasent surprise it turned out to be.The Medieval House was everything advertised.Very clean, well maintained with excellent facilities.I would strongly recommend this wonderful house.
I was surprised to see no recent comments, that is why I decided to comment at a rather late stage.
The Old Neptune is in the heart of the picturesque Marina in Ipswich where many luxury yachts and power cruisers are moored and the excellent bars and restaurants give it a ‘St Katherine’s Dock’ type feel. Ipswich is less than an hour from J28 of the M25 and is the county town of Suffolk, perfect as a base to enjoy the Suffolk countryside and Heritage coast.
