About Helen Shields

Hi, my name is Helen,

I grew up in Girvan. The small town is nestled between rolling hills and a long sandy beach on the West coast of Scotland.

As a young adult, I immigrated to Canada but return to Girvan every year to slow down and be rejuvenated. Girvan is a great place to visit with easily access to surrounding quaint little villages, ancient castles and prestigious golf courses. My husband Henry and I have travelled to many places but still our favourite trip is home to Scotland. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we always do.

Helen Shields purchased this house in 2016

Why Helen Shields chose Girvan

Earlier last year I had the opportunity to purchase a Victorian terrace house only 3 minutes’ walk from the shore. I set about completely upgrading and renewing the entire house. In keeping with its 19th century origins, I decorated with a mix of classic period style furnishings enhancing with modern conveniences for optimal comfort.

I am excited to unveil for you my luxury coastal house.

Ailsa House is a truly beautiful place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

Helen has gone to great lengths to make Ailsa house luxurious but comfortable and welcoming at the same time.

The bedrooms are stunning, complete with bath robes. The kitchen is modern and efficient and the living room is equally as lovely.

Helen is a very gracious host and made sure we got settled in and found everything we needed.

She was kind enough to leave us a few groceries and even left us a bottle of wine and shortbread cookies to go with it.

Girvan is a great location to use as a base to explore the south western part of Scotland.

I highly recommend this property.

We all had a lovely stay here. Everything we needed in the house. We had family to show us around locally, but info and advice available.

Nice and central and didn't have any problem with parking.

Great place and terrific location for site seeing

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Helen, your place was amazing. We were so comfortable at your place. The beds were super comfy, we cooked we hung out and we went on day visits both North and South. The location was good for day trips to Glasgow, Edinburgh and we even went to the highlands. Although next time we would stay in the highlands overnight. I would highly recommend Helen's for your stay. There is lots of room, the location is super accessible and we loved it. Thanks for having us.

Beautiful apartment in a great location

  • 5 of 5

The apartment has been tastefully updated and is very comfortable. The location is great and I would definitely stay there again. The only issue we had was with the clothes dryer. Since it is in an enclosed room with no ventilation, it didn't dry clothes very well. The intake air to the machine was hot and humid without ventilation.

Owner's Response: Hi Micheal, So glad you enjoyed your stay at Ailsa House! Thank you for the heads up about the dryer issue. The washer and dryer are new and the dryer is the model which does not require an outside vent, it has an enclosed venting chamber which needs emptied every so often. This is my fault I forgot to mention to my housekeeper about that, so I'm glad you said. I will have a slated additional vent made on the door though. You and your family are welcome back anytime.

Good experience

  • 4 of 5

I rented the house June 26-30, 2017. Helen Shields, the owner of the house, returned my emails within 24 hours. James and Teresa, the caretakers of the house, were wonderful. My friends and I arrived a few hours before the official check in time. James and Teresa were able to accommodate an early check in without any problem or additional costs. Teresa provides nice welcome gifts of chocolates, bottles of wine, etc. and she keeps the house very clean and tidy. The rooms in the house are slightly small. Thankfully, Helen has done a wonderful job of decorating the house. The house is not cluttered and the furnishings are of very high quality. Helen's approach to home décor makes the rooms feel more open despite the smaller size. Mattresses in vacation rental houses can be of poor quality. Not so with this rental house. The mattresses were very comfortable. The garden patio is a wonderful place to relax in after hiking. The town of Girvan offers opportunities for hiking, relaxing on the beach, golfing, castle viewing, and more all within 20 minutes or less driving time. The residents of Girvan are very friendly, especially the owner of Surfing Buddha. This rental house is a great deal for the price. I highly recommend the house to others. Tamara

A well appointed and very comfortable period home in Scotland.

  • 5 of 5

When we arrived at this beautifully appointed Victorian terrace we were warmly greeted by two wonderful caretakers who orientated us to the terrace with pride. The home is full of Scottish charm throughout. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked with a good range of utensils for those that like to cook family meals. The bathroom was full of nice smelling creams which added a lovely touch. The internet and wifi was strong, especially for two teenagers and we loved having Netflix available. The area is quiet yet close to all amenities including bars and supermarkets. The home is also close to attractions and tourist sites including the ferry terminal at Cairnryan which was convenient. It was an altogether wonderful stay and I would not hesitate to stay here again in the future. Thank you Helen for providing a seemless booking process and home full of Scottish character.

Girvan is an ideal spot for a wonderful vacation situated midway from Glasgow to Cairnryan. Glasgow is the 'jumping off spot' for many tours you can take to the highlands (talk to me about those I've taken.) While in the picturesque town of Cairnryan you can take the ferry to Ireland and enjoy historical Belfast. All this and be back in Girvan for dinner.

PS. While in Belfast there are many coach day tours available and the shopping is amazing! Here are some of the surrounding area activities • Culzean Castle 6km/3,7 miles
