Self catering, own pool, superb mountain location only 20mins from beach

This beautiful complex consists of 3 units. A two double bedroomed apartment for four, a studio apartment for two and a studio apartment with separate single bed for 4. All double bedrooms can be made twin if required. Each has it´s own fully fitted kitchen area and shower room together with TV, DVD and hi-fi facilities. All are situated around the 16m x 8m pool that is fenced and gated and controlled by you, within the confines of our large private garden with 3 patios, gazebo & seating areas and with your own entrances to the street with ample on street parking. Each unit has it's own dining area and the apartment has a coverred area with dining for 10 so the group can come together as required. There is a laundry room and ironing facilities. Barx has many bars plus supermarkets, butchers, bakers, pharmacy etc. The area is peaceful, relaxing and beautiful as rural Spain can be.

Approx. 1hr from Valencia and 1.5hrs from Alicante and 15mins from Gandia, home to a beach voted best in Europe for the last two years.

Relaxation or what.: This area is all about rest and relaxation. The mountain area is naturally quiet but being a valley noise does tend to travel but it is always in the distance. Being rural Spain, the Siesta is still respected and between 1400hrs and 1630hrs very little stirs, apart from the odd dog.

If you want the 'or what', then the mountains beckon. Walking can mean 15mins down the road to Barx or a half hour by ancient goat track. This can extend to 8 hour hikes and even full blown mountain climbing.

Next is cycling and the roads here are used for training for Tour de France and Tour d´España, we even have a local lad who competed for España in the last Olympics.

Less energetic, but as much fun, is off roading either on two or four wheels. Hire the right equipment and we can send you off on a journey where you can go all day and not see another person.

It´s your choice.

Fauna and Flora: The area is an haven for many creature ranging from buzzards, eagles and whoopies to badger hare and wild boar. All are indigenous to the region but are very rarely seen. You have to be a specialist to know what you are doing. The locals seem to know, 90% of Spanish men go hunting at some time or other.

Walking in the mountains lets the observer see the variety in plant life. From rare orchids to the two dozen different herbs. It´s not unusual to see an old Spaniard walking along the road in his espadrilles carrying a large bunch of what you and I would take to be weeds, but just like the hunters and the anglers, just about everything given up by nature will go in the pot.

Food in the are tends to be basic, but people will come from all over Spain to try a local Valencian Paella cooked over an orange wood stove and not a prawn in sight. The best thing is you are paying local prices. It´s still possible to get a five course lunch (menu del dia) with wine for less than 10 euros.

History: The area is steeped in history if you care to look. Oscillating between Moor and Christian rule the Spaniard kept his head down and took on whatever was of use. This can be seen typically in the agriculture where the land is taken back from the mountain in a series of steps and planted with olive or almond, a Moorish practice that pre dates the Romans.

In a cave just outside La Drova, paintings were discovered on tablets of stone, rather than the wall of the cave, suggesting trade or at least portability. Very rare and a cave near Malaga is now a World Heritage Site for having 50 such tablets. La Drova´s site had 5000, but not many people know this.

Carry on through Barx and zig zag down the mountain to a village called Simat. Just like any other large village but this one has a 13th century monastary and palace. It is in the process of being renovated from an orange store and well worth a visit. Time it right and you can listen to a recital in the grounds on a sultry evening.

Many guests are happy to relax in our gardens or on the terraces and if you ask the children they all think the pool is best.

The big attraction is the flexibility of the space. You can spend the day doing your own thing and yet all come together for the evening meal in the knowledge you have your own private areas to retreat to. The pool and terraces are large enough that if you are all there together it is still not crowded, we have even had guests who have invited friends to stay for the day. You are in control.

About David Allenby

We are David and Jan Allenby and having retired now alternate between Spain and our house near York, England.

We enjoy hosting and like to see people enjoying themselves, particularly on holiday. We live in the main house in La Drova throughout the summer and like to be available to assist visitors as required but from a discrete distance. We have deliberately utilsed the large garden to segregate the house from the apartments with flowering shrubs and borders with separate access for both areas.

3 separate units, each with kitchenette and shower room. Wheelchair access to living accommodation and garden but 8 steps up to pool area. Apartment consists of double bedroom, twin bedroom, shower room and toilet, lounge with open plan diner with fold out bed. Studio 2 consists of double bed lounge area and kitchenette plus shower room/ W/C. Studio 2 consists double bed, single bed, lounge and kitchenette plus separate single bedroom and shower room/ W/C. All units have their own terraced area with table and chairs and gas BBQ. The 16m X 8m swimming pool, terraces and adjoining gardens and gazebos are for the sole use of our guests.

Perfect for our needs!

We were a family party of 10 and David & Jan's complex was absolutely perfect for us. The apartment and 2 studios had everything we needed to enjoy our self catering stay. We had small children in our group and safety was a must for us which we absolutely got as the complex is very safe and secure with steel entry gates which we kept locked and a gated pool entrance. There a number of areas to relax, eat, socialise together and also enough space to have a minute to yourself. The highlight for us all was the fantastic rooftop pool which the kids were in from breakfast til dusk some days! Highly recommended for a relaxing away from it all stay. We'll definitely look to book again in the future. Thanks.

I kinda feel like I should keep this a secret in case everyone realises what a fantastic place this is, but I must say a huge thanks to David for the perfect holiday.

The photos are a good representation of what to expect but simply cannot convey the spectacular views, the stunning scenery and the absolute serenity offered by La Drova. Such a charming village with all the amenities you need without the noise of tourism blasted at you 24/7. Well located; you have The quietness of the mountains but the beach just a 20 minute drive. Gandia is the nearest major town and the hustle bustle of Valencia is only an hour away.

The villa was perfect for our needs & well thought out. Spaces for alone time and for more sociable moods alike. We all felt instantly at home and comfortable here. But the's all about the pool, man I really miss that pool! The highlight of the stay, without a doubt.

A few tips:

- Bug spray! Bring it, buy it, use it, it is essential!

- A good pair of walking shoes/trainers are a must to really enjoy the mountain walking.

- Car is definitely recommended

- Local produce is of a much higher quality than the bigger hypermarkets

- The pool is quite deep but well secured and good clear views from all angles for watching little ones.

Excellent stay in a truly relaxing setting!

Firstly, the location is AMAZING, situated just out from the old village center (Barx) the property is surrounded by beautiful mountains on both sides. From the rooftop pool (more on that in a bit) you could almost imagine you were the only people on earth. Its about a 20 minute drive to Gandia which is a fairly large town with all the usual stuff (Carrefour etc) and some lovely little squares for evening meals. The beach there is nice but we had a much better time going south another 20 minutes to the beaches in and around Miramar where there a little streams that feed the sea which are really warm and the kids can play in all day long.

The villa itself could not have been better suited to our party. Its made up of 3 units. The first is really quite large and has two double bedrooms, a bathroom and a lounge/dining/kitchen (My mum and dad had one of the rooms and my nan the other). The second is a studio with the main bed in the same living area (large space though), a separate small bedroom and a large bathroom (my wife and I stayed in this unit and our two boys - 4 and 2 - shared the small bedroom). The last unit is also a studio, again with a large lounge/dining/kitchen room and a good sized bathroom (my sister, her friend and their two kids all shared this unit - creating a massive bed which the kids really enjoyed!).

The complex is arranged around one central building with the three units all inside, The configuration is very clever and creates lovely spaces all over the plot, there a little tables where you can escape the kids for a morning coffee along with large nooks where 12 people can sit around one table. The pool on the top is EXCELLENT, its very safe for kids although the water is pretty deep so armbands for little ones is a must. Being above the house it really does feel like a different world and we all had much fun and relaxing there. There is a large garden, which is great for games with the kids and bug hunting :) There is also a wonderful tented area in the garden that is ideal for sitting in in the evening, listening to some music or catching up on facebook (if you must).

Dave and his family were excellent hosts. There were there if we needed them (with tips on restaurants and even printing our boarding passes for us) and not when we didn’t :). i would highly recommend this villa and hosts and in fact have already done so, my brother is visiting later this year with his extended family!

You can do a 6 hole par 3 with the prettiest backdrop you will ever see to a demanding part links course that was once home to the Spanish Open.

Within an hour there are numerous courses suited to all standards. My favourite is El Bosque as it is so well manicured itis easy to forget your score and just take in the scenery. Based on a gated community it´s not surprising mosy Valencia footballers live there.

Sop Press. New course - La Galiana 10kms away. Superb for all handicaps.
