Treat yourself to total rest and relaxation at Casa Colibri (Humming Bird House) a lovely beach house situated at Costa Cumana one of Puerto Escondido's most exclusive communities. This brand new architecturally designed home is literally on the golden sand beach which stretches for kilometers in either direction. Built for comfort and relaxation, Casa Colibri is beautifully decorated and landscaped, yet is family friendly. Whether you want to listen to the ocean waves at night, relax in the pool, entertain under the large palapa in the spacious living/dining room areas, enjoy the sun in the poolside lounge chairs, or watch the sunset over the ocean, Casa Colibri and owners Penny & Joe welcome you to a vacation you won't forget!
Humming Bird House is great for families. The outdoor living space and dinning area allow you to soak up the heat whilst staying in the shade (and keeping an eye on your kids)! The kitchen is fully equipped and opens to the palapa so if you are cooking you can hang out with your friends & family. All bedrooms have Sealy pillow top mattresses and 100% cotton sheets. Whilst the bedrooms have air conditioning all of the rooms have ceilings fans - so you never get too hot! With two bedrooms in the main house (1 with a King, 1 with 2 Queen’s), a media room that can comfortably sleep two and a single bed that can be placed in any room as required there's space to spread out!
Costa Cumana is an ecological beach resort just outside of Puerto Escondido.
Fronting directly on to the beach, Casa Colibri is the place to watch the waves, count the pelicans, enjoy the mantas that dance in the surf and 'ooh' and 'aah' at the dolphins and whales that make regular appearances. The beach is an active nesting area for turtles and if you are lucky you will get to see a 'nido' or turtle nursery as the baby turtle’s hatch and make their way to the sea.
Casa Colibri is a perfect rental for families with kids; girlfriends on 'retreat' or anyone who wants to escape the hustle & bustle of day-to-day life and soak up the sun, sleep in a hammock, sip margaritas in the pool or walk the beach at sunset. Our wonderful staff, Macri & David will take great care of you!
Whilst many people rarely leave the house, Casa Colibri is just 10 minutes from Zicatela beach and all that Puerto has to offer - surfing, deep sea fishing, bird watching, kayaking, and dolphin watching, sailing, and hiking.
Puerto is home to loads of good restaurants (everything from Japanese, Argentinean, Italian and of course Mexican) and oodles of fresh seafood. The local mercado is a lively authentic daily market with everything from food to flowers to artesania available; and the Adoquin and Zicatela offer up lots of shopping. Puerto also offers some great spa like services: manis and pedis, massages and yoga - all of which can be arranged to come to you!
Casa Colibri offers the perfect vacation mix – sunshine, sea, and sand in a luxurious, relaxing setting with all that Puerto has to offer just 10 minutes away. We invite you to come and discover this wonderful part of southern México. Welcome.
Penny & Joe have lived and worked all over the world. They are both educators and currently own and operate their own education business on Vancouver Island, Canada and in Miami, Florida . They first came to Puerto in 1995 and fell in love with the area. After searching high and low for a location to build their dream retirement home they found themselves back where they started in Puerto Escondido in 2008 and after buying land began building in 2010. It was really important to them to build a house that had enough space that visitors and renters could find privacy, but also wanted it to have the feeling of a home not a hotel. With elderly parents and grandchildren it had to be not only family friendly but easy to get around. Penny and Joe love escaping to the peace and quiet that Cumana offers, and particularly love being so close to nature – seeing turtles, dolphins, whales and rays up close on a regular basis is a real treat. They also love exploring the local area. Oaxaca is rich in culture and is the centre for artesania in Mexico. Equally important, particularly to Penny, is the food! She loves to cook and is enjoying exploring the markets and learning to cook with new ingredients. The abundance of fresh fruit, produce and seafood is a definite plus. The house is pet friendly – we wouldn’t dream of going anywhere without our two dogs Gordo and Dushi, who have come to love the beach and playing in the waves as much as we do. Penny & Joe both speak some Spanish and are working hard at improving their fluency. Their staff Macri and David who take care of the house and guest have been great at helping them with this goal

Puerto Escondido (Hidden Port) is a unique location on the Pacific Coast in that it is an authentic Mexican town where tourism has developed slowly and organically. There are no ‘all you can eat’ inclusive resorts or high rise hotels. It is the destination of folks who are interested in the environmental activities the area has to offer (bird watching, hiking, climbing, kayaking etc), the surfing - Puerto has one of the most famous surf beaches in the world, the culture and the food. The town has all the fun amenities and activities you would want on vacation, but at the same time it is a relaxed and restorative place. We found Puerto in 1995 and are so happy to have a home here. There is so much to do, so many beautiful beaches and just enough foreigners with out feeling like you live in an expat enclave. There is a great mix of North Americans, Europeans and folks from across South America. It is great place to re-charge your batteries, but if you are up for adventure there are lots of places to visit from Oaxaca City to Hutaulco to the villages around Pinotepa Nacional or the coffee plantations in the Sierra mountains that frame Puerto. Oaxacan's also have to be the nicest people in all of Mexico!
The endless sea vistas, the peace and quiet, the privacy all make Casa Colibri unique. Enjoy a siesta on the patio, or stargazing at night.
Thank you for the hospitality that you, David and Macri have shown our family. We have enjoyed a lovely and very relaxing time at Casa Colibri. We loved watching the sunrise and set each day, and listening to the pounding of the waves! We enjoyed watching dolphins and whales swim by as we ate breakfast and the pelicans play in the surf all day. The kids spent countless hours in the pool and at the beach building sand castles and fairy houses in the sand. The big hammock was a favorite place for our baby to sleep and play. You truly have a family friendly layout!
Now we head back to the snowy north and will keep warm with our sunny memories of Mexico. We wish you all the best in your home and your little piece of paradise!
Many thanks again

We've rented many properties on Mexican beaches and this one is in a class by itself! It was well represented but the photos did not do justice to all the amenities - including the ocean proximity and amazing view of the surf. The main pool is large even without the attached wading pool (which is ideal for kids under 5). The new Casita pool offers another option for older kids or for star-gazing after kids are put to bed. There is plenty of lounging space for 10 and the beds are all very comfortable. We used the media room as a bedroom, too, and it was convenient to share the guest bathroom & shower since it opens to the hallway. Everyone had privacy and quiet solitude when they desired a nap. David and Macri were especially helpful and the owner was available by email daily to answer any and all questions. We managed fine with one small rental car for 11 people, by taking turns to town for groceries and small group outings. For transporting the entire group, we found taxis or a large van easy to summon. This is an ideal extended-family rental. It also worked well with 3 couples -- we did both. We flew into Puerto E. from Oaxaca and left via the Huatulco airport. Taxis and rental cars are both easy to arrange. There were some great restaurants and the owner provides a handbook with recommendations. We cooked (and BBQ'd) many meals and found the kitchen to be well-equipped. You can pack light -- it is wonderful swimming weather during the day and cool enough at night to sleep well. We'll return as soon as we can!!!
We came to Casa Colibri in real need of a relaxing vacation and Penny's home delivered on every level! The accommodations are more lovely than the photos can convey; the openness of the palapa is exquisite! Imagine an enormous living room, dining room and kitchen/sit-down bar area which is integrated with a beautiful pool, hammock draped patio and a breath-taking broad beach on the blue Pacific! Not to be overlooked is the "sundown couch", roomy, comfortable and perfectly situated for that magical close to the day.
Sleeping suites are spacious, clean, VERY comfortable and each has its own outside porch with table and chairs. Kitchen and pantry are quite well equipped and open to the palapa. There is also a media room but we were never able to tear ourselves away from our oceanfront quarters, lounging in a hammock, sitting in the pool with a cool beverage, or dining on fresh tropical fruit from the colorful market.
And I must add that we had a couple of special needs that Penny kindly accommodated. Finally, her caretakers, David and Macri, are gentle, helpful and lovely. This is an exceptional property owned and operated by good, respectful people. I have already inquired about availability in 2017. Penny is adding and upgrading accommodations in the rear garden - can't imagine that it can get better but I plan to find out!
Simply amazing. This house was perfect for our vacation. It is sophisticated, yet comfortable. You can't beat the view. And the beach was just gorgeous and completely secluded. It was our own private paradise! I loved that the house was a few miles from town, providing a quiet place to relax and unwind. Penny made the planning process super easy and responded quickly to all of our questions. David & Macri were so sweet and took great care of us while we were there. They made us feel so welcome! We felt so safe at the house, despite it being an open air style house (which allowed us to soak in the views from every room!). I highly recommend this house to anyone looking for a relaxing beach vacation!
Casa Colibri is simply a wonderful place to stay, beyond all of our expectations! We came for a week and stayed for two. Macri and David look after the place perfectly and helped us sort out details that made our vacation run smoothly. The place is very clean with all the comforts of a wonderful vacation home. A short car ride from Puerto Escondido, a bustling town with lovely restaurants, markets and all we needed throughout our stay. The owner, Penny, provided excellent information before and during our stay. Highly recommend this beautiful place for a romantic getaway or a family gathering!
It is a great house to relax and have a nice vacation. The house is beautiful, well kept and clean. It has a beautiful view and it is steps away from the ocean.
We had a very nice time, and felt at home with the excellent treatment from Macri and David. Macri cooks delicious!
The town is 25 min away in car.
This place is incredible. Very comfortable. Everything works just fine. Macri and David are excellent people and housekeepers. You can switch from pool to ocean as if you're staying on a resort, but better, cause there is not people around.. The only comment is about the roof ventilator's. We had very hot days and sometimes we needed something more powerfull.
