About Julie & Jory Kaplan

Jory & Julie 'Jewlz' Kaplan: Jory and I work in the medical field in Redding, CA. We escape to Ashland as often as we can to relax. We enjoy quiet time and travel with our children. We love to walk around Lithia Park and go to the theatre with our family. We cherish older homes and are very excited to own a 1900 Historic Ashland Home and to share it with you.

Julie & Jory Kaplan purchased this house in 2011

Why Julie & Jory Kaplan chose Ashland, OR

We hope you enjoy our lovely Victorian Vacation home! This home has drawn our attention for years, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was called the 'Coleman-Mulit' home, and was built in 1900 by Mr. John Coleman.

The Register states, 'John Coleman purchased this lot from G.W. Gillette in 1899 and soon thereafter the local newspaper noted, 'John Coleman will immediately build on his Church Street lot. He plans a substantial residence and foundations are already underway.' {Ashland Tidings, 22-Jun-1899, 3:1} Coleman, operated a canning plant in Ashland with his brother. He sold this house in 1904. In 1906 Lloyd and Gertrude Mulit purchased the property, which they retained as their residence until 1924. The Coleman-Mulit House is a large two-story vernacular ell with a projecting front gable, accented by a full-height projecting bay. Modest Queen-Anne detailing is evident in the complex form, eave bracketry and the 'pent' roof'

What makes this house unique

Luxurious amenities throughout this home. Advantages of renting an entire home:: Unlike a B&B or hotel, you have an entire Victorian home to yourself! Cook in the full kitchen or walk around the corner to enjoy amazing restaurants and attractions.

We liked the idea that it was close to all the activities with a short walk. The house was very clean. It was nice to relax on the back patio with a glass of wine. The art work in the house was fantastic. I loved all the plants and trees around the house. I would definitely come back again. Thank you, Julie and Jory, for making this stay possible.

Charming, Comfortable, and Convenient

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at The Victorian Secret for 4 nights while attending the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. We'd highly recommend it.

The location can't really be beat. Unless you find a way to sleep on stage, you probably won't find many places closer to the theaters. The house is on a street just as you enter town, so it's maybe 150 feet to the main throughway, 2 minutes to Lithia Park, and about a 5-minute pleasant walk to the theaters themselves. It's convenient as well for shopping or if you want to eat out for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

The house is a charming Victorian that is well decorated and pleasant. There are two bedrooms with queen beds upstairs, although one has an alcove where another person might sleep. There is a driveway, so you can park your car off the street. They've decorated in a way that preserves the Victorian charm but also has modern fixtures and electronics. We had four people in our party and spread out comfortably.

The house has all kinds of amenities. Wi-fi is included in the price and was speedy and easy to set up. The kitchen was well-equipped and had a number of basics like spices (you might want to double check before going to the grocery store to stock up). There are flat-screen LCD TVs with cable or satellite TV.

One note: This is a real Victorian home, so there are steps to get in and the stairway upstairs is a little steeper than a modern home. You'd probably have the same issue with most homes in Ashland, but if you have mobility limitations you might want to do a little more digging.

The Victorian Secret is an excellent choice for Ashland.

Location, comfort and a great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We arrived to the Victorian Secret to find a delightfully well maintained 116 year old Victorian home decorated with loving care and well maintained. Two couples plus one we used both bedrooms and the living room sofa and all were comfortable. (The beds are high with foam atop mattress and box spring and a step was used by one in our party (step was provided).

We enjoyed dinners together in the dining room, enjoyed early morning coffee in the backyard. The location 1 block off Lithia Park and 3 blocks from the theaters was perfect

We learned that leaving windows open without putting in temporary screens (provided) led to box beetles being inside, so recommnd that you use the screens. '

We had a wonderful week and hope to be back next year!

Loved our stay. The house was well stocked and beautifully maintained. We loved how close it is to downtown and the serene backyard as well. Had fun watching deer in the backyard. Thanks Julie and Jory!

Great location, nice stay at the Victorian Secret

  • 4 of 5

Overall, our stay was great. The house was cute, spacious and clean. The kitchen was well equipped and light filled. Despite some rain during our week in Ashland we were able to enjoy the lovely backyard a few times. The location of the house is very convenient to shops/theater/restaurants but also quiet. There was room for 2 cars off street.

The two bedrooms were large and had comfortable beds. We had 5 women staying there for two nights and 3 of them slept on the floor - the sofa bed in the living room really wasn't appealing or comfortable (easy enough for owners to upgrade to make their place fantastic). Also, one bedroom had a nook that could have accommodated a single bed or day bed which would have helped our party out with sleeping arrangements. I would say, as currently configured, this house is great for two couples or two single people.

I would recommend it to friends and we may try to stay here again in future years (bringing better pads for the floor).

Location

Car: not necessary

The location of this lovely 1900 Victorian home couldn't be better! This cozy home is located at the very tip of the action, and only one short block away from Lithia Park, shopping, and Shakespeare Theaters. Brother's Restaurant is just a few steps away, so waking up to a great breakfast is easy. We hope you enjoy the charm and romance of our Victorian Secret.
