Barbara was very nice and the apartment was nice and comfortable. We will definitely be renting here again! Thanks for everything!
Barbara's apartment was exactly what a friend and I needed on a recent trip to NYC . The apartment has an excellent location with very close proximity to subway stations and 30th Avenue , where anything you could possibly need can be found . The apartment itself was clean and updated with modern amenities and served as the perfect home base for our forays out and about in NYC . I would definitely stay here again and would recommend to friends considering visiting in the future . Thanks again Barbara , we really enjoyed our stay .
We entered the front door of the complex to a dark and musty smelling foyer which led to 3 flights of dirty carpeted stairs, also smelling musty. We wondered whose job it is to clean the stairway, and it was not cleaned in the 7 days we were there. eg there was an elastic hair tie on the stairs the day we arrived, and it was still there when we left. The stairway needed to be vacuumed - and there were cobwebs on it was well.
The apartment itself was clean and very large by New York standards. However, the sheets on the bed had holes, the towels were old, hard and scratchy and didn't feel very hygenic. There was no mat for the bathroom floor, so we had to use the handtowel. There were no dishtowels, but these were supplied once we asked. The cover on the bed was old, and felt like something from the '70s that hadn't been washed since then. We took it off the bed and found another cover in the top of the wardrobe which had a bleach stain on it, but felt much cleaner.
There was only one water glass in the kitchen and the plates, though numerous, were very small - not dinner size, more like side plates.
Kitchen facilities were basic but ok.
Once we found our way around Astoria to the supermarket and shops, due to a helpful neighbour, we felt much happier. The train to New City was a short, easy walk and we were in town within 20-25 minutes. We did not have a long wait for the train either going to town or coming back to Astoria, so location is a plus for this apartment. Whilst we did not expect 5 star luxury for the money we paid, we feel the basics such as bed linen, towels and crockery need urgent replacing.
I would be reluctant to recommend this apartment to anyone unless the things mentioned are attended to.
On the other hand the shopping facilites nearby were a big plus as we decided to mostly self cater on our holiday, so having a supermarket nearby was great.
The place is in a great location that felt safe and was close walking distance to the subway and also close to LaGuardia airport.
We traveled with our two sons, aged 5 and 9. With that said, we had them sleep on the pull-out couch. The downfall is that they go to bed about 2-3 hours earlier than us and when they went to bed, we were stuck in the bedroom which did not have a television nor a chair or any other furniture to sit on. We ended up sitting on the bed watching Netflix on our tablet but the place does not offer many pillows so we couldn't really get too comfortable as the mattress and the bed post had too much of a gap between them. It would've been great to have a tv and a chair in the bedroom while our kids were sleeping in the living space. We then thought to change and sleep on the pull-out ourselves then we'd have furniture, a tv, and the kitchen space while our kids were sleeping, but the pull-out was extremely uncomfortable and literally had a bar in your back. Our kids don't care about that stuff but as adults, it was tough to make that switch and not get any sleep. So, for those who have young children who will need to go to bed before you, this place isn't the greatest unless a tv and a chair can be put in the bedroom. We did end up putting the one chair in the living room into the bedroom but still one of us had to be on the bed so it wasn't the most comfortable at night.
The wi-fi does not work. We ended up using my husband's work hotspot to watch Netflix on our tablet. We did not address to Barbara as we had an alternative option.
The sheets were stained and the towels were as well. I'm an extremely laid back person who doesn't normally care about this stuff, however, they were really stained...like blood stains and darker colored stains. It was gross. The towels were extremely rough and hard and stained. You can tell they've been washed a million times. It'd be nice to have some new ones switched out periodically as well as new sheets.
As for kitchen appliances, as a family of four, we used the four bowls up each morning and planned to wash them by hand since that wasn't enough for the dishwasher, however, there was no dish soap. We also only had one roll of toilet paper and the place didn't have more stocked so we had to knock on Barbara's door to get toilet paper which was a bit weird since the place should just be stocked with that stuff.
I think it'd be great for adults, but not families with young kids.
Superbe appartement dans un quartier typique et calme . Restos , Metro, et commerces super proche.
Je vous recommande ce lieu!!!!
Pros: This place is conveniently located a few blocks from the nearest metro and is reasonably priced relative to New York standards. Barbara checked in on us on our second day. We told her that we needed more towels which she promptly got for us later that evening.
Cons: Bathroom is not in the best condition. There was mildew on the side of the bathroom that look like it's been there for quite sometime. For an $80 cleaning fee, the cleaning lady should do a better job. Also, the shower nozzle and knob looked like it was falling apart. Fortunately, the water was still working. When I informed Barbara of this, she admitted that she needed to get this repaired. Also, another nightstand and lamp in the bedroom would have been good as there is only one present which is not convenient for both individuals sleeping in the room. Lastly, be warned that the wifi will crash if you have more than one person using it.
Overall, ok. Not a total disaster. There is room for improvement...pardon the pun.
The apartment is located in very safe and quiet neighborhood with local attractions, numerous bars and ethnic restaurants, Movie Theater, beer gardens and parks such as Astoria Park located right by the East River from where you can enjoy great views of Manhattan skyline.
